FREDERICK W. PARSONS, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO INGERSOLLRAND COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
VERTICAL COMPRESSOR UN IT.
Application filed may 20,
. Be it known that I, FRE'nERIoK W. PAR- SONS dent of,Elmira, county of Chemung, and State of New York, have invented a certain Vertical Compressor Unit, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings. p
, This invention relates to compressors, but more particularly to compressor units of the vertical type and the objects .of the invention are to produce suchunits capable of being readily assembled in multi-stage machines occupying relatively small floorspace, simple and compact in design and strong and rugged in construction and having substantially all their operating parts readily accessible for assembling, disassembling, inspection and cleaning.
' Further objects of the invention ar to enable a frame or column for a compressor unit to be constructed with a removable front section forming a combination cover plate and front support, which may be removed when desired without deranging or disturbing the remainder of the unit. The accompanying drawings show one preferred form of the invention in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation-partly in longitudinal section of a m'ulti-stage compressor including two compressor units.
Figure 2, is an enlarged transverse sec-. tional elevation of one unit with the com bination cover plate and front support removed, and
Figure 3, is a transverse sectional elevation of the removable combination cover plate and front sup ort.
Referring to the rawings, Figure 1 illustrates a two stage vertical compressor mounted on the foundations A and in this instance the compressor units are shown mounted at each side of the pit B in position to be driven by a suitable electric motor C located in the pit between' the compressorunits. The motor C may for instance be a synchronous motor, as shown, having a separately excited field, and a fly wheel D, which also forms an exciter pulley. The motor and the fly wheel are mounted on the main shaft E for driving both compressor units. It is to be understood, however, that Figure 1 is to be taken as illustrative only, showing a suitable form of motor drive, 'and if desired the compressor units could be mounted Specification of Letters Ratent.

the base by means of the filter screen H.
Only one compressor unit will be described 1n detall, since the other is substantially similar, except for the fact that one is a low pressure unit and the other a high pressure unit. In the example shown in the' draw- 1ngs,-the low pressure cylinder J and intake K are shown at the left and the high pres-.
sure cylinder L and discharge 0 are shown at the right with their respective inner and outer air heads P and Q, and R and S.
Referring more particularly to the low pressure-unit, illustrated in detail in the figures, the base F is provided with the bearing T for the main shaft E and an open frame or column U is suitably mounted on the base F as by means of the bolts V, and is adapted to support a compressor cylinder. as for instance the low pressure cylinder J with its air heads P and Q. The air heads carry any suitable form of inlet valves V and discharge valvesX, in this instance valves of the plate type being shown, the cylinder J has the reciprocating piston Y and piston rod Z.
The main frame or column U, as shown,
head d to which the piston rod Z is suitably connected. The connecting rod 6, as shown, is suitably connected to the cross head pin f at its upper end, and to the crank pin 9 of the crank it on the main shaft E at its lower end. 'By means of this construction, the
cross head d is guided on the guide 0 supported on the inner wall or web of the main frame or column U'and the cross head, con: necting rod, crank and main shaft are readily accessible for all purposes.
In order to close the front opening of the column U a combination cover plate and frontsupport j, is provided having side webs or portions in and provided with top and bottom flanges o and 12 having bolt holes g and 8 adapted to register with the bolt holes 25 and u respectively in corresponding portions of the .top I) of the column U and the top of the base F, so that when the cover plate (5 is placed in position on the base F and beneath the top 6 of the column, it maybe securely bolted in position, closing the opening 1n the column and forming a support for the operative machineryi within the column is afforded. by the column itself as constructed and designed.
Each main frame or column U is preferi ably provided with a bracket 1; for supporting a suitable intercooler w adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to the brackets, and connected to the low and high pressure cylinders by means of suitable piping In Figure 2 the discharge y of the low pressure cylinder is shown connected in the intercooler w and the arrangement of the intercooler extending longitudinally between the compressor units and connected thereto by means of the brackets 41, serves to strengthen and brace the entire structure and reduce vibration.
A suitable gear oil pump 2 carried by the pump support or case 3 in the base F, the details of which pump need not be described in detail, is adapted'to be driven from the crank it in any suitable manner, and may be connected to suck oil from the oil sump or b38111 Gr by any suitable means (not shown). An oil ring 4 may be provided on the main shaft E adjacent the main bearing T and a removable main bearing shield 5 having a hand hole cover 6, is provided over the main bearing. The oil may be pumped up by the pump 2 by connections (not shown) to the trough 7 in the cap portion 6'. of the column from which the oil passes to the cross head guide and cross head and other connected operative parts of the machinery.
In addition to the removable combination cover plate and front support j aflfording accessibility to the interior of the column, and the removable main bearing shield 5 affording accessibility to the main bearing, additional removable cover plates 8 and 9 are provlded at each side of the column and removable cover plates 10 and 11- are provided on the cap portion of the column toafli'ord accesslbility to the piston rod gland 12, and other ad acent parts. By removing the cover plates and main bearing shield for the column, the main shaft E may be assembled and disassembled in the machine in a convenient manner and with a minimum of labor. While the machine is in operation any desired portion may be inspected at will,
y removing the appropriate cover plate.
