Description

J. A. GASKILL.
FURNACE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 28. I920- v1, 417, 4:78. Patented May 23,1922.
TTOFNE'Y l i 15L 4 WINVE/VTOR nauruu stews JAMES A. GASKILL, or CLEVELAND, oHIo.
FURNACE. v I Q Application filed MayZS,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James A. GAsKrLL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which I hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which, it appertains to make anduse the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of tilting crudible' furnace in which the fuel employed is gas, fuel oil, ortar, etc, in which steel and other metals can be melted and which is'part-icu larly adapted to preparing high speed steel for casting from crucible alloys, and in which a high degree of temperature can be quickly obtained, thus cutting down the time required for melting.
The invention includes a melting furnacemounted upon trunnions and containing a crucible having a lip for pouring, and also includes means for injecting a fuel mixture of superheated air and atomized oil or gas through the trunnions into the combustion space between the crucible containing the metal, and the walls of the furnace.
It also includes means for causing a circulation of hot air around the exterior of the walls of the furnace before the admixture therewith of fuel gas or air, to raise the temperature of the air to a superheated condition before it passes through the trunnions into the furnace.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the device. 2 is a plan thereof, showing in dotted lines the inlet nozzles for fuel gas or oil and superheated air. Fig. 8 is a sect-ion showing the operating gear.
In these views A is the furnace, B is the crucible mounted upon a raised portion of the bottom A thereof, C, C, are blocks which maintain the crucible in spaced relation to the furnace walls when it is tilted.
D is an opening in the bottom of the furnace throughwhich metal can be discharged in case of breakage of the crucible without clogging the furnace. D, D are doors which permit removing the bottom lining. The opening D permits draining 1920. 7 Serial No. 385.087;
Spcciiflcationof Letters Patent. Pate t d 13 23 1 1922 the combustion chamber, D a latch or bolt. E is a spout from which metal is poured. F is the charging opening and-G is the vent. H, H, are standards provided, with bearings 1,1, in which the 'truniiionsJg J, are mounted. v
The burner nozzles K, K, for injecting the fuel mixture, pass through thesetrunnions, which. turn with "them. Thesenozzl'es are laterally deflected at '.their' points to discharge the fuel gas tangential-1y to the furnacewal-l, into the annular space, L, near the bottom of the furnace, underneath the shoulder L. This annular space, L, is; formed by. means of the projection M in the lining ofthefurnace and promotescombus i tion by retaining the gases temporarilyand by preventing them from ascending, too rapidly to the top of the furnace, and applies the heat directly to the bottom of the crucible. 1
The shoulder M near the top of the furnace produces an annular space in which the gas is expanded before issuing at the outlet.
, The air is superheated by means of an exterior annular chamber N into which it enters through a plpe, or pipes, N, tangentially arranged at the bottom of the chamher, and thence circulates in a spiral direction to the top of the furnace, whence it issues at O, O, and passes downwardly through pipes P, P, and enters the mixing chambers Q, Q, into which the atomized oil or gas delivered through supply pipes R,] R, is projected through fuel nozzles,R, R,
and finally enters the furnace through the discharge or burner nozzles K described. The furnace is preferably tilted by means of a worm wheel T upon the furnace and a worm T mounted in bearings T on :one of the standards, H. Y
Having described the ,inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A melting furnace comprising a body mounted on trunnions, a crucible spaced therefrom and enclosed therein, tangentially discharging burner nozzles passing through sald trunnions, an exterior. annular. a1r chamber, a tangential a1r inlet at thebottom of said chamber, downwardly directed air outlet pipes communicating with the top of said chamber, mixing chambers into which,
said downwardly directed air pipes dis charge, said tangentially dischargingnozzles communicating with said mixing chambers,
said 'fuel nozzles discharging within said mixing chambers.
2. in a melting il'urnare, a furnace body mounted upon horizontal trunnions, bearings for said trunnions, an annular air chani ber enclosing-said furnace body, an air inlet pipe entering said air chamber at a tangent and adjacent to the bottom thereof, an air outlet pipe adjacent to the upper end oi said air chamber, a mixing chamber communicating With said outlet air pipe, a burner nozzle passing through one of said trunnions into said iurnaceand communicating With saidmixing chamber, a fuel nozzle communicating With said mixing chamber and said burner nozzle, and a'supply pipe for said fuel nozzle.
In a melting furnace, furnace body mounted upon trunnions, bearings for said jeeting portion forming a heat-retaining chamber atthe bottom of the furnace into which said fuel inlet pipes discharge, and
an expansion chamber at the top of said furnace, and a cover for said furnace, and means for heating the air supplied to said burners.
4. In a tilting crucible furnace, a furnace body, trunnions upon which saidit'urnace is mounted, burner nozzles for fuel oil and air passing through said trunnions, and tangentially entering said furnace, an annular inward projection intermediate of theptop and bottom of said furnace, said fuel, inlet pipes discharging underneath said projection, and crucible supporting meansat the bottom of the furnace, a crucible thereon and spacing blocks intermediate of said crucible and projection, substantially'as described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my
