and they are located on the outside of the plate 12, the ring 28 seating at its base against the outer face of said plate and covering the slot 25% therein.
The operating means of the tumblers 18 and 20 are on the outside of the door, and on the inside of the door is a means for permitting operation of the bolt 13 as a night latch. For this purpose, the rear face of the bolt 13 has a recess 29 in which seats a rotatable tumbler 30 having the shape of a disk which is provided with a peripheral notch 31. On the rear face of the block 15 is a lug 32 which is so dimensioned that when the notch is in alinement therewith it can pass thereinto.
The tumber 30 is operated by a knob 33 carried by a stem 3% extending from the center of the tumbler, the knob being located outside the door 10. In this side of the door is a slot 35 running in the direction of the length of the bolt 13 and registering with a slot 36 in the back wall of the look In the slots 35 and 36 is mounted a slide block 37 through which the tumbler stem 34 passes and in which it is rotatable. The end of the block 37 which is next to the tumbler 30 has adisklike head or enlargement 38, and a recess 39, which latter houses a spring 10 coiled around the stem 34 and bearing against the face I of a pair of keeper apertures 13.
of the tumbler, the purpose of this spring being to make the tumbler work tightly and not turn too freely. The end of the slide block 37 which is next to the base of the knob 33 has an outstanding pin 41 which extends into a recess 42 to enter a selected one The tumbier 30 is operable by the knob 33, and when the pin 41 seats in one of the apertures 13 the tumbler notch 31 is in alinement with the lug 32, whereas when the pin seats in the other aperture, the tumbler notch is out of alinement with the lug. The block 39 is free to yield in the direction of the length of the stem 34 sufliciently to permit the pin 11 to snap into the apertures 13. The block 39 is of course non-rotatable so that the knob 33 may be operated as described. It will be evident from the foregoing that the tumbler 30 can be readily set without applying graduations or other indicia to the knob 33.
To the bolt 13 is also connected a spring 1 1 tending to advance the same to locking position. 4 lVhen the bolt 13 has been advanced to locking position by the spring 44, it is locked in this position by placing the tumblers 18 and 20 across-wise of the slot 23, as shown in Fig. 3. The bolt now cannot he slid rearward or retracted as this movement is blocked by the tumblers and the stationary plate 21 in the opening 22 of which the tumblers seat. The bolt cannot be retracted from the outside of the door until the tumblers are set to pass through the slot 23. When this is done, and the knob 27) and the parts associated therewith are pushed rearwardly so that the block 15 pressing against the rear end of the bolt slot 14 forces the bolt rearwardly and thus retracts the same. lVhen the bolt 13 is advanced and locked by the tumblers 18 and 20, it can be retracted from the inside of the room by operating the knob 33 to place the notch 31 ot tumbler 30 into alinement with the lug 32 ot the block 15. The knob can now be moved inwardly in the direction of the length 01? the bolt, whereupon the latter is carried along with the tumbler 30 and retracted. can pass rearwardly as it is now not blocked by the lug 32, the notch 31 having been set to register with the lug, so that when the tumbler is slid back as described the notch goes over the lug. To look the bolt in advanced position from the inside of the room it is necessary only to turn the tumbler 30 so tha t its notch 31 is out of registry with the lug 32, the tumblers 1S and 20 oi course being also set in bolt-locking position as l'ie'lore. \Vhen the tumblers 1S and 20 are set to permit the retraction of the bolt, the latter can be retracted by the knob 33 without any setting oi the tumbler 30.
