MUSICAL TOY.
Lenora; f
Specification of Letters Patent. Patlgnhgd umygag, 1%}22,
Application filed February 15, 1921. Serial No. $45,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME BARroLowsKr, a citizen of the Republic of Germany, resid ing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Toys, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention is a musical toy by means of which musical sounds are produced when it is rotated.
Referring to the annexed drawing in which my invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my toy.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the lower portion of my toy with one of the perforated sound chamber plates removed.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of my toy taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
My toy includes a bar 1, a sound box 2 secured to one end of said bar and a handle 3 journaled on the other end of said bar. The sound box 2 is formed with four sound chambers 4, 5, 6 and 7, the chambers 4 and 5 being arranged side by side and below the chambers 6 and 7 respectively which are also arranged side by side. A slotted plate 8 divides the chambers 4i and 5, on the right side of which plate are secured reeds 9 which register with the slots in the plate. A slotted plate 10 divides the chambers 6 and 7, on the left side of which plates are secured reeds 11 which register with the slots in the plate. The upper and lower walls of the chamber 4 converge outwardly while the upper andlower walls of the chamber 5 diverge outwardly. The upper and lower walls of the chamber 6 diverge outwardlywhile the upper and lower walls of the chamber 7 converge outwardly. A perforated plate 12 is secured to the side, upper and lower walls of the chambers 4 and 6,'forming the outside wall of said chambers, said plate having a plurality of holes 13 leading into chamber 4 and a plurality of holes 14 leading into chamber 6. A perforated plate 15 is secured to the outer edge of the side, upper and lower walls of the chambers 5 and 7, forming the outside wall of said chambers, said plate having holes 16 and 17 respectively leading into said chambers. The handle 3 extends horizontally from the rear edge of the bar 1 and is secured on a shaft 18 journaled in a bearing secured to one side of the bar 1 at the upper end and transversely thereof.
By grasping the handle 3, the bar 1 and sound box 2 may be rotated in either direction about the shaft 18. When rotated clockwise air passes through holes 13, chamber a, slotted plate 8, chamber 5 and holes 16, and through holes 14;, chamber 6, slotted plate 10, chamber 7 and holes 16, which causes the reeds 9 and 11 to vibrate and produce a musical sound, the reeds 9 producing one chord and the reeds 11 producing another chord.
When the sound box is rotated counterclockwise air passes therethrough and causes the reeds 9 and 11 to vibrate and produce respectively chords a tone lower and higher than the tones which they produce when the sound box is rotated clockwise, because the chamber 5 is larger than chamber 4: and the chamber 7 is smaller than chamber 6.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A musical toy including a bar, a handle journaled on one end of said bar for rotating it, a sound box on the other end of said bar, a pair of sound chambers in said sound box, a slotted plate and reeds between said chambers.
2. A musical toy including a bar, a handle journaled on one end of said bar for rotating it, a sound box on the other end of said bar, a pair of sound chambers in said. sound box, a slotted plate andv reeds between said chambers, one of said chambers being larger than the other.
3. A. musical toy including a bar, a handle journaled on one end of said bar for rotating it, a sound box on the other end of said bar, means in said sound box for producing one sound when it is rotated in one direction and for producing another sound when rotate-d in the other direction, two pairs of sound chambers in said sound box, a slotted plate and reeds between each pair of chambers, one chamber of each pair being larger than the other.
4. A musical toy including bar, a handle journaled on one end. of said bar for rotating it, a sound box on the other end of said bar, means in said sound box for producing one sound when it is rotated in one direction and for producing another sound when rotated in the other direction, two pairs of sound chambers in said sound box, a slotted plate and reeds between each pair of chain-- bers, one chamber of each pair being larger than the other, reeds of one bar forming a different chord from the reeds of the other bar.
5. A musical toy including a bar, a handle journaled on one end of said bar for rotating it, a sound box on the other end of said bar, means in said sound box for producing one sound when it is rotated in one direction and for producing another sound when rotated in the other direction, two pairs of sound chambers in said sound box, a slotted plate and reeds between each pair of chambers, one chamber of each pair being larger than the other, the small chamber of one pair of chambers being located at the side opposite the side of the sound box at which the small chamber of the other pair of chambers is located.
6. A musical toy including a bar, a handle journaled on one end of said bar 'I' or rotat ing it, a sound box on the other end of said bar means in said sound box for producing one sound when it is rotated in one direction and for producing another sound when rotated in the other direction, two pairs of sound chambers in said sound box, a slotted plate and reeds between each pair of chambers, one chamber of each pair being larger than the other, the reeds of one bar forming a diilerent chord from the reeds of the other bar, the small chamber of? one pair of chambers being located at the side opposite the side of the sound box at which the small chamber of the other pair of chambers is located.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JEROME BARTOLOWVSKY.
