The rack bar 2 may be guided by the standard 1 for vertical movement in any suitable or preferred manner; and the pinion 4: meshing with the rack teeth 3 of the rack bar, together with the ratchet wheel 5, mounted on a pivot pin 13 carried by the lwusing 11.
The operating lever 6 is forked at its for' ward end to provide arms 14 and 15 adapted to receive neatly between them the pinion 4. and ratchet wheel 5, the said arms'being' also pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 13. i The space between the arms 14 and 15 is reduced t theirjunction to neatly receive the actumember 7 (Fig. 2) which is alined .h the ratchet wheel 5 "for operative engagement therewith.

Normally the lower linger 7 is held by the spring 18 in engagement with the ratchet wheel 5.
"The holding member 8 is mounted on a pin 19 carried by the housing 11 and has a downwardly extending" finger 20 which is normally held in engagement with the teeth or". the ratchet wheel 5 by means of a spring 21. The ratchet wheel 5 is made of a diameter substantially greater than the pinion 4 and with a substantially greater number of teeth, and the parts are so arranged that upon an up-and-down movement of the lever 6, the ratchet wheel is rotated one tooth at a time, the member 8 serving to hold the rack bar against descent during the upward movement of the lever. It will be seen that by the use of aratchet wheel having a relafor this purpose a cross pin tively greater number of teeth than the pinion 4, the lengtl'i of stroke of the operating lever is reduced to a minimum. This is advantageous in the operation of the jack in that the tendency of the operating handle to strike parts of the vehicle which is being raised or lowered is substantially reduced.
The reversing device comprises a Hat member or plate 9 which is entered between one arm of the operating lever 6 and the adjacent wall of the housing. and is mounted upon the pivot pin 13. For receiving the pin 13, the plate 9 is provided with an elongated opening 252', and for guiding the plate for movement longitudinally of the operating lever, the plate has a slot 23 adapted to receive a guide stud 24: projecting from the side of the lever 6; and as an additional guiding means the lever is provided with a stud 22 for coacting with the opening 22 in the member 9. Upon its upper inner edge the plate 9 carries a cam member 25 in the form of a coiled spring which serves to control the movements of the holding member 8. To this end, the cam member 25 is arranged to engage with the holding member 8, when the member is moved to its outermost position as determined by the pin 13 engaging with the forward or inner end of the elongated opening 22. Thus, referring to Fig. 3 (dotted lines), it will be seen that when the reversing device is in its outermost position, the cam member 25 serves to hold the holding member 8 out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. 5 until the lever 6 approaches the limit of its upward movement, whereupon the finger 20 of the holding member is permitted to engage with the ratchet wheel. In this operation, the holding member is controlled by the cam member 25, which, as the lever moves upwardly, moves inwardly away from the holding member; and by the time the finger engages with the ratchet wheel it has escaped past one of the teeth thereof to permit a gradual lowering of the rack bar.
In order to effect such downward movement of the rack bar, it also becomes necessary for the finger 7 of the actuati g member to escape past a tooth of the ratchet wheel in the downward movement of the lever. This is eiiected by a reversal of the position of the actuating member against the action of its controlling spring 18, and

In order that the jack may be nninipnlated from a point removed therefrom a substantial distance, we provide on the mem her 9 of the reversing; device on operating. stud 82 with which the hooked, end of" an extension handle may on a qc. Herein the means for connecting the two sections to gether comprises a bolt 36 carried by the section 33 and entered through a slot 37 in the opposite section, with a wing-nut 38 for locking the two sections together. A headed stud 39 is also carried by the section 33* and is arranged to enter a bayonet slot 40 and looked in position therein by the wing-nut 38.
Vi e claim as our invention:
1. A jack comprising, in combination, with a standard having a raclr bar mounted for vertical movement therein, a pinion pivotally mounted relative to the standard and meshing with the rack bar, a ratchet wheel. of greater diameter than the pinion and rigid therewith, an operating handle piv oted co-axially with said pinion and having an actuating member for operatively engaging said ratchet, and a holding member ei gagiiig said ratchet for preventing rotation of the pinion.
2. A jack comprising, in combination with a standard having a 'ack bar mounted for vertical movement therein. a pinion pivotally mounted relative to the standard and meshing with the rack bar, a ratchet wheel of greater diameter than the pinion. and rigid therewith, an operating handle piv oted co-axially with said pinion and having an actuating member for operating the same, and a holding member for said rack bar adapted to coact with said ratchet wheel.
3. A jack comprising, in combination with a standard having a rack bar mounted for vertical movement therein, a pinion pivotally mounted relative to the standard and meshing with the rack bar, a ratchet wheel of greater diameter than the pinion and rigid therewith, an operating handle pivoted co-axially with said pinion and having an actuating member for operating the same, a holding member adapted to coact with said ratchet wheel, and means mounted upon the operating lever for controlling the holding member.
4. In a jack, the combination of rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar, a toothed wheel rigid with the pinion, an operating lever having an actuating member For operatively engaging said toothed wheel, a holding member also adapted to engage with said toothed wheel, and a cam member carried by the operating lever and movable relative thereto to control the position of said holding member.
5. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar, a
toothed. wheel rigid with and oil greater diameter than the pinion, an operating lever having an actuating member, a holding member coacting with said. toothed wheel to prevent movement of the rack bar, means operatively associated with the operating lever for controlling the position of the holding member, and means for controlling the position of the actuating member operable in the movements of the lever.
6. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar, a toothed wheel rigid with the pinion, means operatively engaging the toothed wheel to rotate it step by step, a holding member for the rack bar, and a reversing d vice operatively associated with the holding member and the actuating means, said device comprising means adapted in its inoperative position to maintain the same normally so.
7. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing therewith, a toothed wheel rigid with said pinion, means operatively engaging the toothed wheel to rotate it step by step, a holding member for the rack bar, and a reversing device operatively associated with the holding member and the actuating means, said reversing device comprising a member pivoted (.iOdXltLllY of said pinion but shi ftable relative thereto and ha-ving a cam member adapted to engage with the holding member to control its position.
8. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar to move it, a toothed wheel rigid with the pinion, a hand lever having an actuating member for engaging with the toothed. wheel, a holding member also adapted to engage with the toothed wheel, a reversing device carried by the lever and having a cam portion movable into engagement with the holding member to move it out of engagement with the toothed wheel in one position of the lever, but permitting such engagement in another position of the actuating lever.
9. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar, a holding member for the rack bar, means including an actuating lever for rotating said pinion, and reversing device operable in the movement of the lever to control the movement of the holding member, said device comprising means operable when the sam is in inoperative position to maintain the same normally in this relation.

In a jack, the combination. with a rack bar and a pinion meshing therewith, of a holding member for the rack bar, means for rotating the pinion comprising an operating lever, an actuating member carried by the operating lever, means with which the actuating member is adapted. to engage in the movement of the lever in effecting a reversal of the jack, a reversing device mounted for movement with the operating lever and adapted to engage the holding member, and means carried by the reversing device adapted in the inoperative position thereof to prevent a shifting f the actuating member in the movement of the lever.
1 In a jack, th combination with a rack bar and a pinion meshing with the rack bar, of a holding member for the rack bar, an operating lever having an actuating member, means arranged for shifting the actuating member in the operation of the handle to effect a reversal of the ack, a reversing de vice comprising a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the lever and having a part arranged to engage the holding member, and means for limiting the upward movement of the operating lever to prevent a shifting of the actuating member when the reversing device is in its inoperative position.
12. In a jack, the combination of a rack bar, a pinion meshing with the rack bar, a holding member for the rack bar, a lever operatively associated with the pinion, means for controlling the holding member including a movable member, and a handle adapted to engage either with the operating lever or with said movable member to actuate it.
13. In a jack, the combination with a rack bar and a pinion meshing therewith, of a toothed wheel rigid with the pinion, a holding member for the rack bar, an operating lever having an actuating member adapted an operating lever provided with a socket,
and a reversing device carried by the operating lever and movable longitudinally thereot to effect a reversal of the jack, ot a handle adapted to engage in the lever'sochet and provided with a hooked portion for engaging with the reversing device to operate it.

In a jack, the combination with a rack bar and a pinion mounted on a pivot and meshing with the rack bar, of an operating lever having an actuating member operatively associated with the pinion, a reversing device comprising a plate having an elongated opening ior receiving said pivot, said opening having a pair of notches in which said pivot is adapted to engage, and a spring member carried by said plate adapted to engage with the holding member and tending to hold said plate in position with the pivot engaging in either one of said notches.
