To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known t'hat I JOHN h/IICHALEK, a citizen of the United tntates, and a resident of thecity of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to combination locks, and has for its object the provision of a keyless lock operated by a stem and a combination of numbered disks which may be readily set for various combinations.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rlhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view of a door showing my lock applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a view of the entire lock;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of F ig. 3;
F ig. 6 is a detail view of the inner disks;
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the numbered outer disks; and,
Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of the lowest outer or numbered disk.
My invention illustrated comprises a casing 10 having a cover plate 11 from which extends a bushing 12. Lugs 13 extend inavard from the casing walls to retain the cover plate in position. A bolt 14 extends through an opening inthe front wall of the casing and is normally forced outward by a spring 15 which bears on the bolt and on the wall of the casing and is coiled around a pin 16 mounted in said casing and extending through an opening in the cover plate 11, as shown in Fig. 2. A lug 17 extends upward from the middle portion of the bolt and a slot 18 is provided at the inner end of said bolt.
The combination of the lock comprises a series or plurality of marked or numbered outer disks, and a companion series of cooperating inner disks, the number of outer disks being equal to the number of inner disks. Each outer disk carries a series of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1922. serial No. 463,437.
equally spaced marks or numbers as shown in the drawings. Any number of pairs of companion disks may be used.
In the form illustrated the series of disks consists of three outer and three inner disks. The lower outer disk 20 bears a plurality of equally spaced marks or numbers on an upper bevelled edge 21 and is provided with an integral sleeve 22 having depending lugs 23 which t and engage in the notches 24 of the sleeve 25 of a companion inner disk 26 rotatable by saidouter disk 20. Said disk 26 is provided with a slot 27 (see Figs. 4 and 6). and notches 28 extending laterally from sald slot which are adapted to receive the lug 17 of bolt 14 and form projecting portions or means on said disk to lock said bolt in withdrawn position. An intermediate disk 30 bears numbers on its upper bevelled edge 31, spaced in accordance with those on disk 20 and so arranged as to be placeable immediately above the numbers on said disk 20. Said disk 30 is provided with an integral sleeve 32 tting in sleeve 22 and having depending lugs 33 which engage in notches 34 of sleeve 35 of a companion disk 36 which is provided with a slot 37 similar to slot 27 on disk 26, said sleeve 35` fitting within sleeve 25. An upper disk 40, bearing on a. bevelled edge 41, numbers spaced and positioned similarly to those on disks 20 and 36, is provided with a sleeve 42 having depending lugs 43 which engage in notches 44 in a sleeve 45 of a companion disk 46 provided with a slot 47 similar' to slots 27 and 37. A stem 49 is provided with an upper knob 50 and lower angular portion 51 which engages in an angular opening 52 of an arm or follower 53 which engages in slot 18 in lock bolt 14 for moving said bolt. A threaded member 54 is fastened to the inner end of said stem to hold it in position in the sleeves and to hold the disks assembled (see Fig. 3) and a groove or index 55 is edge of knob 50.
In assembling and setting the lock for a certain or predetermined combination the bolt 14` and arm 53 are placed in position as shown in Fig. 5, the disks 26, 36 and 46 are placed together with their slots 27, 37 and 47 in register and in line to receive lug 17 of bolt 14, as shown in Fig. 4, the cover plate is added and clamped in position by the side walls of the lock, the numbered disks are then placed together and inserted in neck 12 of the plate. The numbers on provided on th the outer disks may be set in various predetermined positions forming various combinations. In the form illustrated the companion disks are provided with tivo lugs and notches and in view thereof each outer disk may be set in tivo distinct positions, at 180O apart. The number ot these settings or arrangements may be increased by increasing the number of slots on the inner sleeves, and the number oi combinations may bel further increased by increasing the number of pairs of disks. The stem vis placed through the sleeves and fastened in position by means of member 54 to hold the memberstogether, the groove on knob 5() extending 'forward toward lug 17 and in alignment with the registering slots of the inner disks. The stem and disks'may be set in position shown in Fig. 2, placing numbers 7i, 14 and 17 over the aligned slots extending forward, along the center line of bolt 14, to form the combination with Which the stem may be turned and through its arm 53 be enabled to Withdraw the bolt by sliding lug 17 in the aligned slots. Thebolt may also be locked open by turning the numbered disk 2() and through its lugs the companion inner disk 26, bringing lug 17 into one oi the notches 28 extending laterally from the slot 27. When the bolt is not looked in withdrawn position the springy 15 will normally extend thebolt and hold it in extended or shot position. The angular opening 52 in the arm and the angular portion 51 on the stem are made irregular in order that the stem will only fit in said opening in a deiinite position so that the notch 55 on the knob ol the stem will extend' in the direction of the longitudinal portion' of the arm 53. This is done in order that the stem may be introduced in the arm only in the correct position enablin it to Withdraw the bolt when the slots on the disk are in aligned forward position.
The lock ismounted on the article or container to be locked, as Jfor instance a door 56 as shown in Fig. 1, with the bushing` 12 and the numbered disks extending to the exterior through the Wall of the article or container, making" the numbered disks and knob of the stem readily accessible to be operated. The lock is Well adapted l'or use ou doors, safes, ice-boxes, trunks. tool chests, and various other articles, and may be made with any plural number oiZ pairs of companion disks and in any desired shape and size.
