To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM F. TiIESEL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Altoona, Blair county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locomotives and more particularly to means for centering the swinging frame of an articulated locomotive. In locomotives of this type, usually one of the frames is mounted for swinging movement relative to another frame so that when the locomotive is travelling on a track other than straight, the frame has a transverse movement relative to the boiler. According to the present invention an improved simple and dependable means is provided to yieldingly hold the frame centrally relative to the boiler. Briefly stated the invention comprises a single, yieldable compression resisting device constructed and arranged to oppose swinging of the frame relative to the boiler.
The objects and features of novelty will be apparent from the description taken in connection with the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a more or less diagrammatic plan view illustrating the location of the device of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation taken substantially on the line '3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4: is a top plan view of one of the spring seats and the associated bearing pad on the frame; and
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings the present invention is shown in connection with a locomotive having a front frame consisting of the side members 10 and 11 which at their front ends are secured to a saddle 12 on the front engine of the locomotive. At their rear ends they are connected by a cross brace 13 which is pivotally connected in any suitable manner as indicated at let to the saddle or front part 15 of the rear frame, this latter frame also having side members 16 and 17 and being rigidly connected to the boiler in any suitable manner, one of the connections being shown at 18.
The boiler of the locomotive is supported on the front frame in such a manner as to permit the front frame to swing transversely relative to the boiler. To this end any suitable supporting brackets, such as 1.9 and 20, are secured to the underside of the boiler and slidingly rest on the frame members 10 and 11. In order to provide sufficient bearing surface the frame member 10 carries a bracket 21 having a wear plate or bearing pad 22, this pad being provided with suitable lubricant grooves 23 in its upper surface. As shown the bracket and pad are cut away on their inner sides to form a re cess 23 for a purpose presently to be described. In a like manner the opposite supporting bracket 20 rests on a bearing pad 22 carried by the bracket 21 secured to the side member 11 of the frame. The inner sides of the pad 22 and bracket 21 are cut away to form a recess 23.
According to the present invention a yieldable compression resisting device is interposed between the side members of the frame and has one end acting on the frame and one of the supporting brackets and the other end acting on the frame and the other supporting bracket. Consequently when the frame moves transversely relative to the boiler the compression device is compressed and exerts a force to return the frame to its central position.
As shown in the drawings the compression device includes a pair of spring seats 24: and 25, these seats being reversed relative to each other, that is to say one is a left-hand seat while the other is a right hand seat. In the form of the invention shown the compression device includes three compression springs 26, 27 and 2S and the spring seats are formed with curved lateral walls to hold these springs in position. The top wall 29 of the spring seats is adapted to engage the lower surface of the supporting brackets and its upper surface is flush with the upper bearing surface of the hearing pads. At their upper inner ends the spring seats are provided with hooked portions 30, which are received in recesses 31 formed in the supporting brackets. In this manner the spring seats are loosely interlocked with the supporting brackets so that when a supporting bracket moves inwardly it carries its associated spring seat with it. Atthe ends opposite the hooked portions, the spring seats have their upper walls 29 extending outwardly as at 32, these extensions fitting in the recesses 23 and23 of the brackets 21, 21. Thus the spring seats are loosely interlocked with the side members of the frame so that there can be no displacement of the spring seats longitudinally with respect to the frame.
In operation when the frame swings to the right for example as viewed in Figure 3, the left hand spring seat is also carried toward the right while the right hand spring seat being interlocked with the supporting bracket 20 reacts entirely against this bracket as the right hand member 11 of the frame moves away and towards the right from the said spring seat. Consequently the springs react between the frame and the right hand supporting bracket 20, thus tending to swing the frame toward the left, that is back to its central position. In a similar manner if the frame should swing to the left as viewed in Figure 3 the spring devlce would react against the left supporting bracket and the frame and thus tend to move the frame toward the right or back to its central position.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described in detail it is to be understood that the invention is not thus limited but includes modifications and changes which come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In an articulated locomotive havlng a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler, said frame including a pair of spaced longitudinal members, a palr of brackets secured to the boiler and slidably supported on said members, a pair of reversely disposed spring seats, each bearing against one frame member and the bracket supported thereby, and a compression spring interposed between said supports, whereby the spring acts to center the frame relative to the boiler.
2. In an articulated locomotive having a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler,'said frame including a pair of spaced longitudinal members, a pair of brackets secured to the boiler and slid ably supported on said members, a substantially horizontal compression spring interposed between and' operative on one frame member and bracket at one end thereof and the other frame member and bracket at the other end, whereby the spring acts to center the frame relative to the boiler.
In an articulated locomotive having a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler, a transverse horizontal compression spring, a pair of members each disposed between one end of said spring and the frame, and means connecting eitherv of said members to the boiler while the opposite member is abutting the frame.
4. The combination with an articulated. locomotive, having a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler, of means to center the frame relative to the boiler comprising, a pair of spaced abutments on the boiler, a spring seat loosely interlocked with one abutment and an adjacent part of the frame, a second revcrsely arranged spring seat loosely interlocked with the other abutment and an adjacent part of the frame, and a horizontal compression spring interposed between said seats.
5. The combination with an articulated locomotive having a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler, said frame including two longitudinal side members, of means supporting the boiler on said frame for swinging movement including a part slidable on one frame member and a second part slidablc on the other frame member, said parts being on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the frame, and substantially horizontally disposed yieldable compression resisting means operable be tween one of said parts and the opposite side frame member and between the second of said parts and the opposite side frame member, whereby swinging of the frame from its central position is yieldingly resisted.
6. In an articulated locomotive, a frame adapted to swing transversely relative to the boiler, said frame having two horizontal bearing pads, one on each side of the longitudinal center line of the frame, a pair of supporting pads resting on the bearing pads and secured to the boiler, a springseat operative on the side of one bearing pad and its associated supporting pad, a second spring seat operative on the adjacent side of the other bearing pad and its associated supporting pad, a compression spring interposed between said seats, and means holding said seats against tilting when moved inward by relative swinging of the frame and boiler.
