Description

M. M. STURGIS.
UNDERWAIST.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-25, i920.
jmgzmfl y To all whom it may concern.-
. discard corsets and aera e Be it known that I, MABEL M. STURGIs, citizen of the United States, residing at Burley, in the county of Cassia and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is a specification.
waists, and particularly to a garment of this character intended and adapted for use in place of a corset.
for, while leaving the bust and upper por-- tions of the body entirely free and unrestricted. I
A further object resides inso constructing the garment that the skirt and waist of the wearer may be pinned to the same, as may also the hose supporters, and that the weight of these portions of the apparel secured to the underwaist will be carried from the shoulders of the wearerv p Astill further object is to provide a underwaist which can be easily made of heavy drill, or of lighter material as desired, thus being readily laundered, and which, makes it possible for the wearer to yet to obtainsup'port for the clothing and a naturalsupport for the abdominal portions of the body.
With these and other objects in view, which will be apparent from the drawings, specification and claims, this invention includes certain novel features of construction t and combinations of set forth. p
In the drawings: j
Figure 1 is a view in front perspective showing my improvedunderwaist in use.
Fig. 2 is a similar view in back perspective.
v Fig. 3 is a perspective view in rear elevation showing the underwaist opened'out to better illustrate the construction of the same.
The body portion of the garment is made up of heavy drill or of lighter material, to suit the requirements and demands of the wearer, and is cut and fitted so that the back thereof will conform to the contour of the body. At the sides of this back portion 1 parts which will now be the tapering front portion 2 and 3 are secured, and shoulder straps 4 and 5 made integral with the back portion arebrought reinforcing patches,
straps 8 and through the material of ,f n iiio 1i over and secured at their ends by stitched to the front portions 2 and 3.

being To give a finish andadditional strength, I v
and to prevent stretching, it is preferable that all seams'be taped that a 'binding tape 7 be secured on the edges 7 of the material. My present invention relates to under on the forward loops of the shoulder straps 4 and 5 straps 8 and 9 are secured, portions of a hooke tening being provided at 10 and 11.
A reinforcing strip 12 is sewed onthe back portion lat'the waist line, and reinforcing patches 13' and 14 are sewed at the corner of the front portions 2 and 3 and along the lower edge of the garment substantially at those points where the, front portions join the back. It is preferable that the edge binding 7 be secured over these portions of the garment, howevfer under some conditions it may be found desirable to employ elastic or webbing strips for the 9 under which circumstances binding will not be necessary.
In the use of my improved underwaist the arms are slipped through the loops of the shoulder straps l and 5, and the tapering front portions 2 and 3 are drawn forward and are overlapped as shown in Fig. 1. These ends are secured by pins passed through the reinforcing patches 13 and thefront portions or, asshown in Fig 1, hoge supporters 15 are used to secure these en s. through reinforcing patche -14 to depend from the waist." In this way the reinforced back is' presented for securement of the skirt and waist, the hose supportersare carried at the lower edgeof the underwaist,
from the shoulders. The'overlappingfront as shown at 6, and
, snapped, or other fasthe fastenings of 75. and extended around straps 8 and 9 to thus give a finish to all Other hose supporters are secured portions-are adjusted upon each occasion and make a smooth tirely unrestricted.
While, inthe foregoing,fI have described specific embodiments, and only certain possible modifications, it will be appreciated that in practice I do not limit have mentioned fitting support for the abdomen, while the bust of the wearer is en I I claim:
An underwaist including with a shaped back portion, substantially triangular front portions secured at the sides of the back por- 5 tion to have their tapered ends overlapped over the abdomen of the wearer and secured, shoulder straps extending from the top edge of the back portion looped over and contened acros the chest of the wearer to hold. the shoulder straps in place.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MABEL M. STURGIS.
