To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM F. \VoLr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Somerville, county of Somerset, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient centrifugal casting machine for producing cylindrical, tubular castings, such, for instance, as are formed as a,preliminary step in the manufacture of piston rings. The improved machine has been designed for convenience in operation as well as for its efficiency in the production of castings of uniform thickness and density.
In order that my invention may heifer-fig. understood, Twill first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out the novelty of the same in the annexed claims. In said drawings Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional View of my improved centrifugal casting machine.

Mounted in suitable bearings of a frame 1, is a vertical rotary shaft 5 resting upon the step bearing 2 and carrying between its ends a driving pulley 3. The pulley 3'is' driven by a belt 6 passing around idler pulley 7 9. The driving belt 6 is operated by a driv ing pulley 10, mounted upon the power shaft 11.
Rigidly secured and keyed to the upper end of the vertical shaft 5 is. a'rotary table or platform 15, upon which is secured an upright mold-receiving pot 20 formed with integral lugs or feet 21, through which extend the securing bolts 22 that fasten the pot 20 to the table 15. The pot 20 has a central sustaining foot or lug 23v for strengthening its bottom wall. The pot 20 is also formed diametrically opposite vertical slots 21 cylindrical ide wall at its upper edge to receive the radial handle lugs 31 of a removable mold-supporting pot 30. This pot 30 is of cylindrical shape, having a closed bottom designed to fit-the fixed pot 20, the engagement of the lugs 31 with the slots 24 caus'mg the removable pot 30 to rotate accurately with the table 15 and pot 20.
The removable pot 30 is preferably provided with a removable lining shell 35 within which is molded the sand core {10, against which the casting is to be made. The core 40 is preferably counterbored on a slight taper at its upper end for the purpose of forming a slightly thickened ring on the end of the cylindrical casting for convenience in handling in the lathe.

65 is a j casting regulating ring formed with an annular, downwardlypresented flange 66 adapted to enclose the upper edge of the fixed pot 2O and'an inwardly presented annularflange 67 that projects inwardly over the upper edge of the fixed pot 20 and the sectional mold comprising the removable pct 30,- lining 85 and send Gore 4o. The in ner edge or lip of this horizontal flange 67 determines, by its extent of projection over the open upper end of the sand core, just how thick the casting will be. The cap ring 65 is securely fastened to the under face of the yoke (30 by means of set screws 68, said ring being concentric with the pouring opening 61 of yoke and also concentric with the sectional mold when in position thereon. The central opening or cavity of the cap ring is of sufiiciently larger diameter compared with the pouring opening 61 of yoke 60 to form between the cap and yoke an annular chamber. indicated at 69, into which any surplus molten metal poured into the mold will collect as it flows over the determining lip 67 of the regulating ring.
In Figure 6 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification in which the rotating table 15, carrying the fixed pot 20 is mount- 'ed upon a shaft which extends at an angle of 45 degrees and is supported in bearing brackets 2. The arrangement of driving belt 6 and pulleys 3, 7 and 10 is slightly modified to suit the changed angle of the machine. The cap plate or yoke 60 is secured upon sectional rods 57 actuated by eccentrics 52 and hand lever 55", while a counterbalancing weight 80, attached to a cord or, cable 81 passing around guide pulley 82 provided with a book 83, engages the flange on the cap plate so that when the cap plate and attached regulating ring 65 are disengaged from the sectional mold, they can be readily moved upwardly by the assistance ofthe counterweight and be sustained in disengaged position for the mounting or removal of the mold. It will be observed from this modification that the rotating casting machlne may be mounted to operate at any desired angle. 7
The operation of the improved machine will be understood with the following brief explanation with particular reference to the preferred form shown in the first five fig-l.
ures of the drawings. lVith the cap piece removed, as indicated in dotted. lines, the removable pot 80, containing the cylindrical lining 35 and molded sand core lO, is placed into the fixed pot 20 with the handle lugs 25 engaging the slots 24. The cap piece is then moved over into position above the sectional mold and by operation of the handle 55 moved downwardly into closerelation thereto. The power is then thrown on to rotate the table carrying the sectional mold, the rapidity of rotation depending upon the character of the casting to be. formed and the -molten metal of approximately the proper quantity is poured into the rotating mold through the pouring opening 61. The metal forming upon the inner surface of the sand core 40 rises to a uniform thickness and density, the thickness depending upon the amount of projection of the lip 67 of the regulating ring 65, it being understood that any surplus of metal will flow over the lip and collect in the chamber 69. hen the casting has been completed, the cap piece is.

8. In a rotary casting machine, the combination-of a rotatable table, a mold'supporting pot formed with wall slots and fixed to said table, a removable mold-supporting pot,
adapted to fit said fixed pot-and havingradial lugs or arms engaging the slots of said fixed pot, a sand core mounted in said removable pot. a casting regulating cap plate, and means for supporting the cap plate in operative relation to said pots.
9. In a rotary casting machine, the combination of a rotatable table having a moldsupporting pot fixed thereto, a removable mold-support1ng pot adapted to fit said fixed pot, a removable cylindrical lining mounted in said removable pot, a sand core molded in said lining, a cap plate carrying a casting regulating ring formed with a downwardly presented flange, sectional rods upon which said cap piece is mounted, and hand operated means, including eccentrics, engaging said rods 'for moving said cap piece into and out of position.
10. In a rotary casting machine, the combination of a rotatable table having a moldsupporting pot fixed thereto, a removable mold-supporting pot adapted to fit said fixed pot, a sand coremounted in said removable pot, a cap plate carrying a casting regulat-- ing ring formed with an inwardly projecting,
. annular flange or lip and a downwardly presented annular flange, sectional rods upon which said cap piece is mounted, and hand operated means, including eccentrics, engag 7 ing said rods for moving said cap piece into and out of position.
