This invention relates to an air brake attachment. y f
The object of the invention is to provide a valve and operating mechanism therefor which maybe interposed in ana-irbrale pipe and cause the air pipe to be opened for applying the air brakes to the car with which the device may be associated wheneversaid car should become derailed.
Other objects and objectsrelatingl to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way oi' eX- ample in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment connected to the truck oi a railway car with the parts shown in their normal position,
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the valve and operating bar,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, 10 indicates a pair of rails upon which there is positioned a railway truck generally indicated by the reference numeral 11. Longitudinally of the truck there extends the usual air brake pipe 12 in which, in this instance, there is interposed ay valve 13.
rlhe valve 13 more particularly comprises a hollow irusto-conical shaped body portion 14 having formed therewith a pair of nipples 15, each of which communicate with the interior of the body portion. The nipples 15 are Oi' course interiorly threaded and adapted to connect the divided ends of the pipe 12 at the point where the valve 13 is interposed. Also upon the opposite sides oi the body portion 14 at a point intermediate the nipples there is formed a rib 16, said rib terminating at its lower end in a rim iiange 17 formed about the base of the body portion 14. Upon opposite sides of the rib 16 there is formed an elongated slot 18 in the body member 14.

boss 21 formed on its lower side and a central opening 22 formed on its inner side which is adapted to receive the coil spring 23, s aid coil spring engaging in a similar opening formed in the lower face of the valve member 19 and adapted to press the valve member 19 upwardly so that the same may rform a continuous tight iitting with the body member 14. Also the plug 20 is held against accidental displacement by wire 24 which passes over the undersurface of the boss 21 and has its ends threaded through suitable openings formed in the ribs 16 and thereby made fast as illustrated in Figure 3.
The upper end of the valve member 19 ter- Inmates in a stem 25 which is preferably square in cross section, and adapted to receive a hub portion 26 of the cross bar 27, said cross bar being secured against removal by the means of a Cotter pin 26. The cross f cross bar 27 there is formed an enlargement 30, in which there is provided an opening 31 adapted to accommodate the compression spring 32 which engages at its outer end a ball 33, said ball being adapted to seat in a hemispherical recess 34 formed in the outer side surface of the body member 14, and thus yieldingly hold the cross member 27 in position for closing the openings 17 in the sides of the body member 14, and permitting communication between the nipples 15 through the openings 2O formed in the side walls of the valve member 19. This normal position or the cross bar 27 is illustrated in the different figures of the drawing. Each end of the cross bar 27 is formed with an opening 35 through which there is extended the similar end links of a pair of chains 35, said chains being` suitably connected at their other ends to the intermediate portion of the truck, as indicated at 37.
1n the operation of the present device, the cross bar 27 as before stated, is normally held in its righty angular position to the air pipe 12, as shown by the spring and ball 32 and 33, respectively. ln case the truck should become derailed it will of course swing` out oi alignment with the oar body which it supports and through the action of the chains 36 the ball 23 will be automatically unseated and the valve member 19 rotated for bringin` its openings 20 in conimunication with Jthe o1 enings or ports 17 oit the body member le, and thus establishing communication with the atmosphere and applyiing the brakes.
lt also may be here mentioned that the Chains 3G have sul'licient slack to permit the car to turn a curve without rotatingl the cross arm 2T and prematurely setting' the brakes.

The combination with an air brake pipe of a railway car, of means by which said air pipe may be open to the atmosphere when the ear becomes derailed, said means Comprising a valve interposed in said air pipe adapted to normally permit a continuous air passage through the air pipe and when moved to a predetermined degree to open said pipe to the atmosphere, a Cross member carried by the stem of said valve and adapted to operate the same, an enlargement formed on the lower side of said arm, a ball and compression spring carried by said enlargement, said ball being adapted to engage in a recess in the outer wall of the valve and yieldingly hold the arm in position so that the valve will be inoperative, and means connecting the outer end or' said cross member to a truck orp the car whereby pon the derailment of said car the valve will be operated for establishing communication with the atmosphere.
2. The combination with an air brake pipe of a railway car, of means by which said air pipe may be open to the atmosphere when the car becomes derailed, said means comprising a valve interposed in said air pipe adapted to normally permit a Continuous air passage through the air pipe and when moved to a predetermined degree to open said pipe to the atmosphere, a cross member carried by the stem of said valve Iand adapted to operate the same, a ball and compression spring` carried by said cross member, said ball being adapted to engage in a recess in the outer wall of the valve and yieldingly hold the arm in position so that the valve will be inoperative, and means connecting the outer end of said cross member to a truck of the car whereby upon the derailment of said ear the valve will be operated for establishing` communication with the atmosphere.
