Description

E. SEYFARTH.
TAB HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 27. 1921.
on, the shelf. a
EDWARD snvrnnrn, or Dixon, ILLINOIS.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD-SEYFARTH, a
citizen of the United .States, residing at Dixon, in the county of Leeand State of Illinois, have invented'certain new and use ful Improvements in Tab Holders,.of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tab or label holderssuch as are used with centerboards or cardboards upon which cloth and other strip material is wound, the holder'being adapted to prominently display from the shelf the marking or whatsoever information that may be contained on the tab concerning the length, quality, width, price, etc, of the ma terial. I
It is desired to apply and the present invention provides a tab of the character described, to a centerboard, covering the entire end thereof, thus presenting a neat a-nduniform appearance when the bolts are piled I have also aimed to provide a tab holder so constructed that it will accommodate itself to the varying widths of centerboards.
Another object of my invention isthe provision of a tab holder of the character described constructed in such simple and novel manner as to be capable of production at a comparatively low cost.
A further object of my invention is to pro-- vide a tab holder, the supporting portion of which is adapted to be positioned on one side of a centerboard and held thereon by the material wound on the board, the construction being such as to prevent accidental displacement of the holder when the bolt is handled.
My invention also contemplates the provision of a label adapted to be applied to the inner end of the tab holder giving a full description of a bolt of merchandise, particularly as regards the position thereof inorder that an invoice record may be associated with each bolt. I prefer that this object shall be attained by enveloping the pilot end. of the tab holder so as to provide a suitable backing to which a gummed label may be applied, giving the full description of the bolt.
Other objects and attendant advantages will be appreciated by those familiar with this art as the invention becomes better understood by reference to the following de- TAB HOLDER;-
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentd Itiay ,9, 1922 Application filed May 27,1921. Serial No. 472,964. v
scription when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an end view ofabolt of ma terial having a tab holder attached" thereto, embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a top view of the tab holder removed fromthe bolt; y
Fig. 3, a sectional view taken on the "line of Fig. l;
, Fig. 4, an enlarged view of the back of the tab holder, with...the holding portion removed;
Fig. 5, a face view of the label-carrier before 1ts applicationto thetab holder.
My improved tab holder is of that-class adapted to be'used on bolts of materialfor the purpose of pre'sentin'ga uniform, marking spacefor designating whatever ready informationis desired concerning the mate rial, and is of particular advantage in .case
the center boards are of different width and thickness. By the"use of my improvements, the tabs will present a uniform and neat appearance as'theycover, preferably theentire ends of thecenterboards, This is evidenced byaii inspection of Fig-1' which shows a bolt of cloth 6 equipped with'a tab; '7, which may contain on its face any data required.
The tab holder comprises preferably a tab or label-holding back designated generally by character 8, and a back-holding portion or pilot end 9 adapted to be inserted into the end-of the bolt or against the'fla't side of the oenterboard as will be presently apparent. The back 8 is formed in the present instance of a plece of sheet metal havlng its longitudinal edges llturned backto provide guidewaysfor a pair of slides 12 which are movable lengthwise on the tab-holding back and limited against removal by the ends 13. Each slide has vertically aligned apertures l ladapted for the reception of the upright portions 15 of the hook shaped end 16 of the back holder 9, this holder being as shown, formed of a single piece of inserted. in the end of the bolt, preferably against one side of the center board 17, and by reason of the resiliency of the wire arms and their tendency to spring outwardly, they wire. This wire member is adapted to be will in this manner be pressed against the materlal atthe turn and consequently establishes such frictional contact therewith as to retain the tab holder in position and against accidental displacement. By reason of this construction the wire back holder will automatically accommodate itself to centerboards of difierent width. The back holder is further retained in position by clamping the wire or by shaping it to secure the desired frictional contact with the contiguous surfaces of the material. The tab holder is also removable from the ends 15 as will be obvious, although such frictional connection is established between the slides and the hooked ends of the wire as to prevent displacement of the tab when handling the bolt.
I have also aimed to provide a label carrier 18 on the pilot end of the back-holding portion 9. This carrier shown in Fig. 5, in the present instance is in the form of an envelope covering the pilot end of the member 9. Such envelope may be of any suitable material and is preferably permanently fixed to the wire. The label 19 containing the more detailed and full information concerning the merchandise and invoice data may be pasted on the carrier. It should be understood that my invention is in no way limited to the particular subject matter shown on the tab and label as this may be changed to suit the conditions and require ments.
In the use of the words tab holder, tab-carrying, etc., in the specification and claims, I refer to the holding or carrying of any suitable tab, label or the like adapted for the reception of written or printed matter intended to give display information.
It is believed that the foregoing conveys a clear understanding of the objects prefaced above, and it should be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction shown as considerable change might be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims, in which-- I claim:
1. A tab holder comprising a tab-carrying body, a pair of slides, means for holding the slides on the tab-carrying body, and supporting means for said body comprising wire arms, each connected to one of said slides whereby to be adjustable to accommodate centerboards of different width.
2. A tab holder of the character described comprising a tab-carrying body shaped to substantially cover the end of a. centerboard, and means adjustably attached to said body for supporting the same, said means adapted to be inserted into the end of a bolt of material and being adjustable as to width.
3. A tab holder comprising a tab-carrying means, a support therefor having spaced arms provided with hooked ends adapted to detachably connect with and for supporting said body, and a pair of slides on said means to each of which one of said arms is connectible, whereby to permit lateral adjustment thereof to accommodate the support to centerboards of different width.
4. tab holder of the character described, comprising tab-carrying body, a support for said body having spaced wire arms, one end of which is adapted to be inserted between a center-board and the goods and each opposite end being turned downwardly and thence upwardly upon itself providing a hooked. supporting end, and means connected to said tab-carrying body and adapted for detachable connection to said hooked ends for supporting the tab-carrying body upon sald support.
