Be it known that I, lloeo ENDERS, a citizen of'the Republic of Germany, anda resident of Belle'ville, in the countyof Essex and State of NewJ ersey, have invented certain new 7 and useful Improvements in lalculating Machines, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to calculating machines of that type in which a plurality'of calculating disks are fixed upon a'common shaft, each disk-being equipped with a plurality ofradially movable pins or teeth to coact with a series of results registering numeral wheels, and having means for adjusting said pins. j
, The main object of my present invention is to provide a manually operable member or, handle for the tooth adjusting means carried by each disk, and provide means for automatically connecting. the adjusting means to said handlewhen the operating crankis in its zero positionland which is automatically disconnected fromthe handle and shifted to engage the tooth adjusting means with its corresponding calculating disk when the operating crank handle is released from its zero position to permit it to be rotated toefitect the rotation of the calculatingdisks. The invention also comprehends the provision of simple and 'efiective means for setting up the calculated numbers upon aseparate' series of numeral wheels, a master key for resetting said numoral wheels to zero, and additional keys for individually resetting said numeral wheels.
It is a further general object of my invention to provide acalculating machine having the improved features :above referred to, which. is simple in its construciomaccurate and reliable inoperation and not liable to get out of order.

This spring extends radially beyond the periphery of the, disk and through a slot 19 in the curved 110 metal plate 18 which extends longitudinally over the series of calculating disks between the same and the front wall of the case or housing 5. It will be understood that a separate slot 19 is provided in this plate for each of the leaf springs 16. The plate 18 is further provided at its opposite ends with the slots 18 to receive suitable guide bolts fixed in the frame of the machine.
The front curved wall of the casing 5 is likewise provided with slots 20 therein, corresponding in number and location wit-h the slots 19 in the plate 18. In each slot 20 a longitudinal movable handle slide 21 is engaged, the part of said handle slide extending through the slot being relatively narrow and said handle slide having a head 22 on its inner end movable between the wall ofthe case or housing and the plate 18. This head on one side is provided with a recess 22 adapted to receive the outer end of the leaf spring 16 when said spring is flexed in the manner to be presently described. A fixed pin 23 projects from one side of the leaf spring and is adapted for engagement through an opening in the adjustable plate 0 and in any one of a plurality of sockets 24: in the face of the disk 6. In this normal position of the leaf spring and the pin 23, that is, the position in which the spring is unflexed and in its normal condition, it will be seen that the plate 9 is locked to the disk 6 for rotation as a unit therewith.
A series of independently rotatable result registering numeral wheels 25 are mounted upon a common shaft 26 extending longitudinally in the front lower portion of the case 5, and suitably fixed at its ends in the frame members of the machine. The numerals on the peripheral faces of these wheels are visible through openings 27 in the wall of the case, and each wheel is provided upon one side with cog teeth 28. lVith these teeth a series of independently rotatable cog wheels 29 are respectively en gaged, said wheels being mounted upon the common shaft 30. These cogs 29 are respectively engaged by the adjustable pins or teeth 3 carried by the disks 6 and in turn transmit rotation to the numeral wheels 25, the extent of such rotation of course, depending upon the number of the pins or teeth 8 which have been projected from the periphery of the disks 6 in position for en gagen'ient with the teeth of the cogs 29.
Any suitable transfer mechanism between the totalizing wheels 25 whereby upon a cwmpletc revolution of any one wheel, or as illustrated a half revolution of any one wheel, a one step movement may be transmitted to the next succeeding wheel, may be used. A large number of different mechanisms to this end are well known in the art and i do not wish to be limited to any particular means for this purpose, nor have I illustrated any particular means to this end, as the transfer mechanism between the totalizing wheels has nothing whatever to do with my present invention. A transfer mechanism, which is adapted to be used with a calculating machine of this character, is illustrated in Patent 957,062, granted to Erwin Jahnz on the 3rd day of May, 1910.
In addition to the series of result register ing numeral wheels, I also provide a second series of numeral wheels 31 mounted in the case above and rearwardly of the series of calculating disks, the numerals being visible through openings 32 in the wall of the case, for the purpose of setting up the number being calculated so that it may remain Visible during the operation of the machine. Each of these latter numeral wheels is also provided with cog teeth 32 on one side to mesh with the teeth of a series of independently rotatable cog wheels which are mounted upon the fixed shaft 34. A pawl is provided for each of these cog wheels, said pawl being of substantially U-shaped form and pivoted as at 36 upon a fixed part of the machine frame. One end of each pawl is V-shaped as at 37 for engagement betwen the teeth of a corresponding cog wheel 33 to hold said wheel against rotation under the action of a spring 33, which at one of its ends is fixed to the hub 33 of the cog Wheel and at its other end is connected to the opposite end of the pawl 35 which extends up wardly and is angularly otlset as at 39. As the wheel 33 is revolved, it acts to wind the spring 33 around the hub 33 so that the spring exerts a tension acting to rotate the corresponding wheel 33.
T he opposite longitudinal edges of the plate 13 are angularly offset or flanged as at 10, and the upper end of each slot 19 extending into this flanged edge of the plate is widened as at 411 to permit the passage of an arcuate rack 12 curved in concentric relation to the disks 6. This rack at one of its ends is fixed to the head 22 of the manually operable handle slide 21 and is supported and guided in its movement by means of a fixed metal bar which holds the teeth of each rack in meshing engagement with the teeth of the corresponding cog wheel 33. It will thus be evident that when the handle 1 is shifted, rotation is transmitted to the cog wheel 33 through the medium of the rack 42, which in turn transmits a rotative movement to the numeral wheel 31, the teeth 32 of which are operatively engaged with said cog wheel. In this rotation of the cog wheel, the spring 38 is wound at one of its ends upon the hub 33 of said wheel and is placed under tension to urge the end 37 of the pawl in effective engagement with the teeth of the cog wheel whereby the latter is held against a casual movement and the numeral wheel is retained in its set position. The operating shaft 14: is journaled in one end of the machine frame and is supported bracket 45. At its other end, this rod is operatively connected by means of a pivoted link 51 to the lower end of a yoke member 52 which is'fulcrumed as at .53 upon a fixed part of the machine frame. The arms of this yokemember are respectively pivoted to bifurcated lugs 5 1 fixed to the inner faces of the flanged edges oftheplate 18. The crank handle 48 carries a bolt 55 which is adapted to enter the bore of the guide lug and is urged outwardly by a strong spring 56 arranged within said handle. The leaf springs 16 which extend through the slots 19 in the plate 18, urge'the plate toward the.
right in'Figure 1, and therefore these springs 16,-throughthe medium of the plate 18 and the yoke 52 and the link 51 urge the-rod 49 towardthe right in-Figure 1. This movement, however, is opposed by the relatively strongspring 56*which projects the bolt against the end of therod 49 and shifts said rod to the left inFigure 1to thereby flex the leafsprings'16and move the free ends of said springsrelative-tothe cam disks 9 so that the-outer ends of the springs are engaged in the recesses 22 of the 1 slide members 21 while thepins 23 carried by said springs are disengaged from the sockets-24 in the disks 6. Thus, it will be seen that when the crank handle 48 is locked against rotation by the projection of thebolt' 55 into the bore ofthe guide 50, 'the'c'amdisks 9 are all released from their positive connection with 'the' disks 6 so that said cam disks can be ro- After all of the digits in the number being calculated have thus been set up upon the numeral wheels 31, the/bolt 55 is disengaged from the guide lug '50 so as to release the crank handle 48. Simultaneously with this retraction of the locking bolt the leaf springs 16 will'return to their-normal positionsand thereby disconnect the adjustable cam disks 9,and consequently the calculat ing disksfrom the handle slides 21. The
crank 18 is then rotated to transmit rotation to the series of calculating disks through the medium of the shaft 44 andthe projected pins coacting with the cog wheels 29 transmit rotationto the series of result registering numeral wheels 25. When one complete rotation of the crank handle is made, it is again locked against movement and the leafsprings 16 are returnedto-their former positions :in operative connection with the handle slides 21. These -handle slides are positively held against shifting movement during the operation of the calculating disks by means of, the pawls 35 which are held by the springs 38 in engagement with the cog wheels Thus the return of the leaf springs 16 to proper position for engagementin the recesses of the handle slides 22 upon the completion of one rotation of the calculating disks, is assured. The handle slides may then be adjusted to actuate the cam disks 9 and set up another number to be calculated, which,upon the next rotation of theseries of calculatingdisks will be added to the number previously transmitted to the numeral wheels25. 1
' The numeral wheels 31 for indicating the number being calculated mayall" be reset at the same time by the operation of .a master key 57 which at its lower end, is engaged with a longitudinally extendingbar 58 resting upon the transversely disposed portions of the U-shaped pawls 35. This key is'normally urged upwardly *by means of the spring'59. Individual keys 60 arealso-provided and at their lower ends are engaged with the respective pawls 35 to singly operate said pawls and-thus individually reset the numeral wheels 31. Depression of these keys 60 is also resisted by means of springs 61. It will be understood, that immediately upon the disengagement of the ends 37 of the pawls from the teeth of the cog wheels the springs38 will act to rotate said cog wheels in a direction reverse to the direction of rotation transmitted through the medium of the racks 12, and thereby return the numeral wheels to zero position.
From the foregoing description consid- I ered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of oper ation and several advantages of my improved calculating mechanism will befully understood. By means of a relatively simple arrangement of the elements]? have provided calculating machine whereby numerous arithmetical computations may be rapidly and accurately performed. The adjusting'means for the cam plates 9 permits of the rotation of said plates with the calculating disks, while-themeans for manually actuat ing the adjustable cam plates 'remains Sta tionary. It will also appreciated that the improved mechanism provides a very compact arrangement of the several mechanical elements and that such mechanism will be positive and reliable in its operation and not likely to easily get out of order.
lVhile I have herein shown and described a. preferred construction and relative arrangement oi? the several parts, it is nev -rtheless to be understood that the mechanism may also be exemplified in numerous other alternative combinations, and l accordingly reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of my in vention defined in the appei'ided claims.
I claim:
1. In a. calculating machine, the combina tion with a calculating disk having radially movable teeth and a rotative adjusting ineni her for the teeth on the disk, at a manually shiftable handle for the adjusting member separate therefrom, means acting to yield ingly hold said handle in a zero position, means for operatively connecting the adjusting member to said h ndlo and simul taneously disconnecting it :troin the calculat ing disk or d'sconnecting the :iidjusting member from the handle and simultaneously connecting it to the calculating disk, means acting to hold the handle in its manually shifted position, means for rotating the cal culating disk and said adjusting member through a complete circle to thereby return the adjusting member into position to be engaged by said shittable handle, means then acting to engage the adjusting member with the handle and disenga e it from the disk,

3, In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of calculating disks, each having a plurality of radially movable teeth and tooth adjusting means for each disk, of manually operable handles, one tor each ad justing member, means in one position locle ing each adjusting member to corresponding disk and in another position locking each adjusting member to its correspending handle, and a member common to all of said locking means shittable in one direction to release the tooth adjusting means from engagement with the handles and si multaneously lock the tooth adjusting means to said disks and in the other direction to release the tooth adjusting means from said disks and connect them to the several handles.

In a calculating machine, calculating disks having radially movable teeth, an op erating handle for rotating said disks and iuovable to or from a zero position, rotatable tooth adjusting cams coacting one with each disk, a series of handles, one tor each tooth adji'lsting cam but separate therefrom, and means controlled by the operating han dle and acting When the handle is at zero position to operatively disconnect the tooth adjusting disks from their corresponding calculating disks and connect the tooth adjusting disks to their respective handles and acting when the handle is shifted from a zero position to operatively connect the tooth adjusting disks to the calculating disks for rotation therewith and disconnect the tooth adjusting disks from said handles.

7. In a calculating machine, a calculating disk having radially movable teeth, a rota-t able tooth adjusting cam coacting with the disk. but independently mwable with relation thereto, a handle separate from the tooth adjusting cam but coacting ther with, and means in one position locking the tooth" adjusting cam to the calculating disk and releasing it from engagement with the han dle andin another position locking the tooth adjusting cam tothe handle but disengaging it from the disk.

In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of'calculating disks each having a plurality of radially movable teeth and an adjusting member for the teeth of each calculating disk, aileaf spring fixed to eachof said members and having means to lock-the adjusting member to the disk against movement with respect thereto, a manually operable handle for each of the adjusting members, a rectilinearly movable platehaving'spaced slots in which the respective leat springs are engaged, and means for shifting said plate to flex the'springs and operativelyconnect the same to the respective handles and release theadjusting membersirom locked connection with the calculating disks whereby saidmembers may be actuated independently ofthe calculating disks to adjust the teeth of the calculating. disks, Y I

13. In a calculating machine, the combination with a rotatable calculating disk having a plurality of adjustable teeth and an adjusting cam operatively engaging said teeth and rotatable concentric to the disk, an operating handle mounted for movement concentric to the adjusting cam, and means for detachably connecting the tooth adjusting cam either to the calculating disk Or to the handle.
14. In a calculating machine, the combination with a calculating disk having a plurality of adjustable teeth, an adjusting cam operatively engaging said teeth and r0- tatable on the same axis as the calculating disk, an actuating handle movable concentrically to the actuating cam, means for connecting the tooth adjusting cam either to the calculating disk or to said handle, a numeral wheel, and means for setting said numeral wheel in accordance with the movement of the tooth adjusting cam including an actuating member carried by said handle.
15. In a calculating machine, the combination with a calculating disk having a plurality Of adjustable teeth, a tooth adjusting cam mounted for rotation upon the same as the disk, an actuating handle for the cam movable concentrically thereto, means for detachably connecting the cam either to the calculating disk or to said handle, a numeral wheel, and means for shifting said numeral wheel in accordance with the movement of the cam including a gear wheel, and an actuating rack engaged with said gear wheel and carried by said handle.
16. In a calculating machine, the combina tion with a calculating disk having a plurality of adjustable teeth, a tooth adjusting cam associated with the disk and rotatable upon the same axis, an actuating handle movable concentrically to the cam, means for detachably connecting the cam either to the disk for movement therewith or to the handle for movement therewith and disconnecting it from the disk, a numeral wheel, means for shifting said numeral wheel in correspondence with the movement of the cam including a gear wheel and an actuating rack engaged with said gear wheel and can ried by said handle, and means for locking said gear wheel in its adjusted position against accidental movement when the cam has been operatively disconnected from the handle and connected to the disk,
17. In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of calculating disks, each having a plurality of adjustable teeth, a series of teeth adjusting cams, one for each of said disks and rotatably mounted concentrically to the several disks, of a series of independently operable handles for the series of cams, means for operatively engaging said cams with either their corresponding calculating disks or their corresponding handles, a series 01": numeral wheels, means for rotating said numeral wheels automatically operated by the actuation of said teeth adjusting cams when shifted to adjust the teeth of the respective calculating dime. and means for locking said numeral wheels against accidental movement when the cams are engaged with their respective calculating disks and rotatable therewith.
19. In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of calculating disks rotatable upon a common axis, each h avin a plurality of adjustable teeth, a series of teeth adjusting cams one for each calculating disk and rotatably mounted upon the same axis. a series of. independently shittable, manuallyoperable actuating handles for the series of cams, means for each one of said handles urging it to a zero position, means for operatively connecting said cams to the corresponding disks and disconnecting them from the corresponding handles or connecting the cams to the handles and disconnecting them from the corresponding disks, calculating disk rotating means, means associated with each handle for locking it in its manually shifted position, and manually operable means for releasing the locking means to thereby permit the return of said handles to their zero position.
20, In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of calculating disks rotatable upon a common axis, each having a plurality of adjustable teeth, a series of teeth adjusting cams one for each calculating disk and rotatably mounted upon the same axis, a series of independently shiftable, manually operable actuating handles for the series of cams, means for each one of said handles 1,414,729: i a i 7 leasing the individual locking means to permit the return of the individual handle to its zero position, and manually operable means for releasing simultaneously all of said locking means to permit the simultaneous return of all of said locking handles to zero position. i
21. In a calculating machine, a series of calculating disks, each having a plurality of adjustable teeth, a series of cams for inde 'pendently adjusting the teeth on each disk, a
series of handles, one for each cam, means for operatively connecting each one of said cams to its appropriate handle and disconnecting it from the associated calculating disc or disconnecting the cam from the handle and connecting it to the associated calculating disc, said handles being manually shiftable to adjust the cams, manually operable means for rotating the cams and calculating disks, an arcuate rack operatively carried by each of said handles and adjustable therewith as the handle is shifted, a spring acting to return each one of said handles to its zero position, a series of pawls associated one with each of said racks permitting the manual shifting of the handles but holding the handles against accidental shifting movement, and means for manually releasing each pawl to permit the return of its corresponding handle or manually releasing all of said pawls to permit the return of all of said handles to zero position.
22. Ina calculating machine, a series of calculating disks, each having aplurality of adjustable teeth, a series of cams for independently adjustingthe teeth on each disk, a series of handles, one for'each cam, means for operatively connecting each one of saidcams to its appropriate handle and disconnecting it from the associated calculating disc or disconnecting the earn from the handle and connecting it to the associated calculating disc, said handle being manually shiftable to adjust the cams, manually operable means for rotating the cams and calculating disks, an arcuate rack operatively carried by each of said handles and adjustable therewith as the handle is shifted, a spring acting to return each one of said handles to its zero position, a series of gear wheels associated one with each rack and engaging the same, a series of pawls,
one for each gear wheel, permitting the rotation of the gear wheel upon the manual actuation of the handle but holding the gear wheel, rack and handle from accidentalv shifting movement, and manually operable means for releasing any one of said pawls or all of said pawls.
23. in a calculating machine, a series oi calculating disks, each having a plurality oi adjustable teeth, means for independently adjusting the teeth on each disk and includinga manually shiitable handle associated with each disk and having an arcuate rack extending therefrom, a series of gear wheels, one for each rack, and engagingtherewith, a series of pawls each engaging. one of said gear wheels, each pawl being pivoted between its ends and having an upwardly extending tail, a coiled spring connected to the tail of each pawl and to the hub of the corresponding gear wheel whereby upon a' rotation of the gear wheel in one direction the spring will be wound upon the hub and placed under tension, means for manually shifting all of said pawls from their gear wheel engaging positions, and means for shifting any one of said pawls out of its gear wheel engaging position to thereby permit the return of all of said handles to their Zero position or the return of any individual handle to zero position.

In a calculating machine, the combina tion with a series of calculating disks, each is in its zero position, a yoke pivotally c0nnected to the plate and pivotally mounted intermediate its ends, and a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and pivoted at one end to one end of said yoke and at its opposite end to the rod whereby to cause the shift ing of the plate to flex the leaf springs and connect them to the handles when said rod is engaged by the bolt on the crank handle.
