Be it known that I, EUGENE L. SEITHEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bathtub Installation, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more particularly to bath tubs, lavatories and sinks which are built in or partly incorporated in the wall of a building, and one object of the invention is to provide a practical mode of mounting and supporting the fittings and pipes for the tub, lavatory or sink within an extension or housing connected directly with the vessel so that a plumber may make the installation without being dependent upon other craftsmen engaged in erecting and finishing the walls of the building. In such installations the rough pipe connections and valves are enclosed and concealed within the wall, and therefore a further object of the invention is to support such fittings and pipes in a way whereby the concealed parts are made accessible after the assembly as well as during the erection of the Work. Other objects are embodied in the means provided for adjusting and setting the parts in respect to the vessel and face of the wall, and in the means for connecting the parts separably including a face plate or tile which may be made to correspond with or match the wall covering.

In the drawing accompanying this application, Fig. 1 is a cross section and perspective view of a bath tub showing the Wall plate of the installation in place and the op erating'handles of the fittings exposed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the end portion of a bath tub having my improved attachment mounted thereon and with the pipes and fittings connected up and concealed within a wall and behind the tub and the parts mounted thereon. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are persepective views of the wall plate, backing plate, and the extension frame or box, respectively. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sec tion and plan view of the tub attachment on line 66 of Fig. 2.

The invention as applied to a bath tub comprises a rectangular frame or box 2 made of sheet metal and having parallel sides 3.

with inwardly turned flanges 4 through which four relatively long screws 5 extend forwardly. A cross bar 6 of channel iron is adjustably connected with the legs or sides 3 of frame 2 by bolts 7 which extend through vertical slots 8 within the front flanges 4. Channel bar 6 is adapted to rest upon and engage the rim 9 of a bath tub 10, and set screws 11 carried by the channel bar engage the under side of the rim and clamp the bar rigidly in place thereon. The angular frame or box 2 is in turn bolted to the vertical face of the channel bar and extends above the rim to any desired height within the range of adjustment permitted by slots 8. A cross piece 12 is adjustably affixed to flanges 4 at the upper end of the box or frame 2'by bolts 14, and the screw-threaded shanks or bodies of the fittings or valves 16 for the tub extend through a plurality of round openings 15 within this cross piece and are clamped thereto by adjustable lock nuts 17. The rear ends of the valve bodies 16 are variously constructed and connected in various ways with hot and cold water supply pipes extending through the floors Usually the valve bodies are detachably coupled with such pipes, and it is also a 001m mon practice to connect the hot and cold water valves together so as to discharge through a common pipe 18 terminating in a single spout 19 within the tub as in the present showing. The valve stems also protrude through the wall above the tub so that only the handles 19 are exposed, but instead of supporting the fittings or valve bodies 16 upon a fixed part of the wall of the room as formerly said bodies are connected by and supported by frame or box 2 which forms a fixed part and extension of the tub. The front side of the box or frame 2 is covered and the parts therein are concealed by a face plate or finishing member 21 which reenforcement plate 22 is secured to the screws 5 which project forwardly from the frame or box'2 and are adjustable back and forth therein. The opposite ends 23 of backing plate 22 are offset'and slotted to receive with openings 24 and 15, and member 21 is fastened firmly against backing plate 22 by clamping separate escutcheons 26 against the front side of said member, utilizing nuts 27 on the valve bodies or fittings 16 for that purpose. Nuts 28 and screws 5 fix backing plate 22 in a rigid position and at various distances from frame 2. and screws 5 may have screw driver slots at either or both ends to permit them to be adjusted inwardly or outwardly in establishing thefinal rest position of the face plate 22 in respect to the face of wall 20. The offset ends 23 of backing plate 22 permit the outer ends of screws 5 and the nuts 28 thereon to occupy a retired position in respect to the face plate 21 which bears against the backing plate 22 at all other points intermediate screws 5.

In Fig. 6 an additional fitting 30 is shown located between the two valve bodies 16 and this fitting 30 represents an operating connection for a pop-up waste valve. However, any other fitting may be utilized and mounted upon frame 2 in this central position or any other position and int-he manner herein described. For example, a spout body, or a shower valve or fitting. may be substituted for fitting 30. The face plate or finishing member 21 may be made in one piece or it may consist of separate pieces corresponding in size and of the kind of tile used in covering the wall, and backing plate 22 is provided with a plurality of screw openings 31 to permit such pieces to be fastened thereto by screws or other means. Frame or box 2 may also be extended or built up to different heights so as to support the shower fittings for the tub.

l/Vhat I claim is:

1 A bath tub attachment, comprising a Wall mountin for a bath tub fitting and means associated therewith adapted to clamp said mounting in a supporting position on the tub independently of the wall and adjustably in respect to the face of the wall.

2. In a bath tub installation, a supporting frame for a bath tub fitting means adapted to mount said frame for vertical adjust ment upon the rim of a tub and a detachable wall plate at the front side of said frame.

3. ltn a bath tub installation, a support for a bathtub fitting, and means adapted to adjustably secure said support in a rigid upright position upon a bath tub within anlgl independently of a wall adjacent the tu 4. In a bath tub installation, an open frame and means adapted to secure the same in a vertically adjustable position upon the rim of a bath tub, means adapted to fasten a'bath tub fitting upon said frame in a vertically and horizontally adjustable position, and means adapted to enclose the front side of said box with a portion of said fitting protruding theret-hrough.

5. In a bath tub installation, a box adapted to be inset within a. wall, means adapted to support the box upon a bath tub independently of said wall, and means adapted to connect a bath tub fitting andsupply pipe with said box.

6. In a bat-h tub installation, a wall mounting for fittings connected with a bath tub having an adjustable supporting connection with the bath tub, and a front plate adjustably and removably secured to said mounting having openings through which the fittings are adapted to extend.

'7. The combination of a bath tub, with a supporting device fixed to said .bath tub upon which a fitting may be mounted above the tub, and a wall plate removably afiixed at the front side of said support adjacent the rim of said tub.

S. A bath tub attaclmient adapted to support a water supply fitting for the tub, comprising an open frame, means adapted to fix said frame to a tub. a front wall plate, and a supporting member for said Wall plate adjustably mounted upon said frame.

9. A bath tub attachment, comprising a slotted frame having a supporting member adjustably affixed thereto and adapted to be secured to a bath tub, and a cross piece and a wall plate having registering openings adapted to receive fittings for said bath tub.

10. A bath tub attachment, comprising an open frame having an angular supporting member adapted to be clamped to the rim of the tub and provided with a plate at the front thereof and means adapted to fasten said plate removably and adjustably in respect to the front side of said frame.

11. A bath tub attachment, comprising a frame having means adaptedto affix the same in an upright osition upon a rim portion of a bath tuli, means adapted to fasten the bath tub fittings upon said frame, and a front closure finishing late removably supported at the front si e of said frame, and escutcheon members mounted upon said fittings adapted to clamp and hold said plate in position.

12. A bath tub attachment, comprising a rectangular frame having means adapted to secure the same upright upon a bath tub,
