ROCKING TOY vEHIdLn.
Be known that I, CLINTON at Johnstown, in the county of Cambriaiand State of Pennsyl'van1'a, have invented cerv tain new and useful improvements in Rock; ing Toy Vehicles,,ot' which the followl'ng s a specification, refereneebeing had to the ac companymg l12LW1I1gS.
' This invention relates to amusement de; 1 vices, part cularlyvto toy vehicles, andhas for its object the provisionof a toy vehicle which is formed as a representation or" a horse or other animal and which has a looking movement in combination with a rolling I movement, the construction being such that ment thereto by the rider.
'the device is propelled by imparting move- Animportant' and more specific object 'is the provision of a toy of this character which o includes a wheel supported frame "upon which rockably mounted a supportformed as the representation of an animal and upon- "whioh the rider slts, the rockable support orelement being connected with a crank shaft which carriestwo of the groundengaging wheels so that as the support is rocked the device will be'caused to travel along the ground.
Another object isthe provision of a device" of this character n which the front axle car Tries toot rests which serve j to enable the rider to impart the necessary rocking movement to the device and which also serve as; steering means for controlling the dlrection of travel. i Yet another object is the provision of a toy of this characterin which the rockable' element has a spring associated therewith" which willassistinthe propulsion of the device at certain positions of the rockable elementflv 1 V An. additional object is the provision of a device of this characterwhieh will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to op-' erate even by the very young, which will. also be highly entertaining and amusing in provement in the art. Y
W'th the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be "herein after more fully described and claimedyand use, durable in service and a general im-f illustrated in the accompanying i drawings; 'in'which:

Pate t d I rockable memberat one limit of its movjeingra supporting frame'which includes a pair of bars 10' arranged in \Lshaped relation and provided at their converging' ends wlth upper "and lowerplate's 11 wlnch probars 10 are reinforcedby met'al plates or and'thestripslGlis a s'haftll formed centrally with a crankportion'lS. i Rotatable upon one end-of the-shaft l7 is awheel 19; while secured upen the other end. isua wheel 20. n N
Rising from the intermediate portion-0t the" name defined by the barslO is a stand ,ard 21 which is formed at'lits lower end with a reduced extension 22 which is tri-- angular'in cross section and which conforminglv fits between the bars 10.. Abolt 23 passes through the bars'10 l and j through the ei tension 22.;for the purpose of-holdingq the standard 21 in"-position"and als o strengthening the frame. It should also be] I stated that'lfprovide afboltflli'whioh passes transversely through the forward extremities of the bars" 10.; The upper-endo'tthe standard 21 is reduced in thickness *tOg-ide fine anupright extension 25 which: iS-fOIkQJd,
as shown at 26.; I -The numeral; 27
v designates the rockable member which is shownii n' 1 the :present *instance as the representationi of a'horse though it is to be distinctly understood that it might be the representation of any otherianimal bird, or in fact any otherobject. Thisr ockable member is provided with, a saddle 28 of any preferred construction and which may be as elaborate "asfdesiredj Projecting through the neck. portion ofcthe -rockable' member and extending beyond "the, sides thereof-are handlebars 29:adapted to be grasped by the rider for preventing falling off. This 'rockable member is disposed upon the top of the standard 21 and is armada I v 4 its lower edge with a recess which receives 32 which has its upper end connected withabolt 33 which passes transversely through 1 the member27, I provide a pitman 35 which the rockable member. also formed with abore 34 which receives the spring 32and the latter has its lower end" connected withthe bolt 23.
In order to impart rocking movement to isconnected at one end with the crank 18 of 'theshaft 17 and which has its other. end pivoted upon the bolt 36 which passes transversely through a recess 37in the lower edge of the rockable member. r
Securedupon the, front axle 13 are inverte'd U-shaped brackets 38 which constitute foot rests for the rider so that the rider may 7 obtain the necessary purchase for effecting rocking movement of the member 27. These bracketsjalso serve as steering means for coni trolling the directlon of travel.
In the use of the device the operator sits upon the saddle 28 with his feet upon the brackets 38 andrwith his hands grasping the handle bars 29. vThe operator then rocks the fmember 27 back and forth whereupon the. member fulcrums upon the front and rear edges of the'standard 21 alternately in a manner similar to the action of a platform rocker. As the member 27 rocks back and forth upon the standard it is apparent that the pitman 35 will operate to turn the rear axleso thatfthe device will be propelled along the ground. Steering is of course effected' by pressing upon the proper one of pulsion.-
I rocking. 7
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I- have thus-provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive toy vehicle I which will be highly entertaining and amusing especially to the young as it not only travels over the ground but produces all'the sensation of riding upon. a galloping pony.
Owing to the simplicity it will be seen that i there is nothing to get out of order and that the device should consequently have a long life and efficiently perform the functions for which it is intended. a I
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention it will 7 be 'appa rlent that I. reserve the right to make claim V The standard 21 is v 1. A toy of the character described coinrear axle.
