1 "CHECK-STU]; HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 t t 25, 22"
Application filed October 30, 1920. Serial No. 420,740.
r T o-aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY A. FROEH- LINGSDORF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at'St. Paul, in the-county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Check-Stub Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled'in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide 3 a simple, inexpensive'and ellicient means for holding the stubs of a check book out of the way so as to expose the stub of the check which is being made out and more especially to secure the used stub-s in an out-of-the-way position when there are two'or' more checks on the same page of the book, or to hold pages of the check book in an out-of-the-way position when a number of checks are being made out insuccession and are not being torn out or detached from the book as they are made out, so that the stub belonging to each check may be exposed to facilitate the endorsement thereof, and in fact to provide a device for holding certain pages or leaves of a book of any kind out of the way or in a foldedback position while writing upon an exposedpage at an intermediate portion of the book, the device being particularly applicable to account book's, ledgers and the llke which are of large size and which must be retained in a substantially flat position upon the desk or table while endorsements are made upon the pages there- V Figure 1 is a view of the holder embody,
of or while making entries or transcribing accounts, striking balances, etc.; and with these objects in view the invention consists in'a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown 1 in the accompanying drawing, wherein ing the invention applied in the operative position to a book of the check book type. Figure 2 is a sectional viewon line 22 of Fig. 1. p Y
Figure 3 is a perspective view thereof detached from the book. V
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is formed. I
The device consists essentially of a sepa-v rator bar 10 carryingfa curved wing 11 which in the construction illustrated is of looped form embodying a transverse member 12 and arcuate arms 13 for engaging I and restraining the book stubs or leaves 14,
and a retaining arm 15 for engagement with the flat leaves of the book to maintain the I holder in proper position to restrain the stub leaves. I
The separating bar 10 carries spurs'17 consisting of tapered tongues for engagement with the binding of the book, and the retain 111g arm is preferably provided with an upstanding ear or flange 19 to reinforce the v 7 same and facilitate manipulation of the flat leaves of the book.
In practice it is preferred to. construct the holder of a single plate or sheet of metal of which the blank is shown in Figure 4, folded upon the dotted lines shown to form the divlding bar and flange 19, the tongues formlng the spurs being struck out from incisions 20 at'the basesof the arcuate arms 13.
The book being opened at thepoint indii cated, it Will be seen that the holder, may
readily be applied thereto and crowded up against the rolled surface of the outermost .stub leaf and then drawn downward to engage the retaining arm with the edges of the fiat leaves of the book so that it is firmly locked in position, and the flat exposed page of the book may then be maintained in a I flat condition while entries are made thereon orwhile the checks are being made out with- 1 out necessitating the holding of the stubs in place by hand as in the ordinary practice.
The upstanding ear or flange of the retaining bar forms a' convenient handle or grip by which the holder may be manipulated,
and the flat bearing of the retaining bar upon the surface of the exposed page retains the same in proper position while' affording a suitable support for the holder. Havingthus described'the invention, what I claim is A book holder comprising a wing to maintain the used stubs raised from the unused j stubs, a single stub engaging arm extending therefrom adjacent one end to engage the unused stubs adjacent the top thereof whereby the view of the unused stubs belowsaid I r arm will be unobstructed by the holder, and.
a flange extending along the upper edge of said arm and at right angles thereto to act.--
as a reinforcement and hold the device in position on the book. 7, d
