BRICK PALLET.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28, 1921.
Patented Apr. 25, 1922.
To all, whom it man concern:
Be it known that I. CLARENCE H.-YoUNc,- a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in, the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement'in Brick Pallets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. V
This invention pertains to improvements in pallets, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to improvements in brick pallets. It is amongthe objects of the 'in vention to provide a brick pallet of simple construction, great strength and durability, while relatively light in weight, and which is very convenient formanipulation.
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a bottom view of a brick pallet;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, being partly in elevation; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the same line as Fig. 2 of the drawings, showing in detail a preferred form of reinforcin construction used at the ends of the pallet illustrated; A
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my inyention selected for illustrative purposes, 1 have shown a, pallet having a body portion 8 preferably formed of sheet metal and having down-- turned lateral flanges 9 preferably terminating in reverse flanges 10 to increase the strength of the pallet longitudinally, while minimizing the danger of injury from careless handling and providing a relatively smooth bearing surface on the bottom of the pallet. The side flanges 9 preferably terminate somewhat short of the ends of the pallet so that the ends of the pallet provide overhanging portions which may be conveniently grasped and which may conveniently fit over suitable supports which may resemble somewhat those illustrated in myco-pending application Serial No. 443,- 986, filed February 10th, 1921. The ends of the pallet are preferably, as illustrated, re-- inforced by reinforcing means which preferably take the form, as illustrated, of two pieces of sheet metal bent to overlie and underlie the ends of the pallet. As best a l :3 and "i cnannnon rn venue or Bos'ron, rrassrionnsnrrs.
I Baron PALLET.
1921. T Serial No. isms'afl Specificationof Letters Patent. Pgr't 11t9d,Ap1', 25,-;1922, Application filedlune 28, i Y i I illustrated in Fig. 4:, the preferred H reinforcement provides theportion l'lbver-L i lyingthe'end of the body8,"the portion 12 underlying the end of said body ,an:d
the cross 'flange 13 transverse tothe general plane of the body Sand preferablyextendf mg across the under side of the pallet substantially inline with the ends of the side I flangesl). The ends of the cross-reinforcing pieces 13' are preferably bent into. gen
eral parallel-ism with the sideflanges-Q and may be tucked between the and reverse flanges 10, where they may be secured byrlvets lfL' Rivets 15 may be side flanges 9 used passing through the ends of the body 8, and the over and underlying'reinforce ments 1 1, 12 to secure these parts together.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of pallet, it will be understood that considerable changes from the con struction illustratedand described may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in*the following claims. I
Claims. I 1. A pallet eomprisingga sheet "metal body having lateral flanges and an end ,re-
lnforcing piece providing portions;;overly-" ing and underlying an endof said body portion. and a cross flange extending between said lateral flanges across said body portionv, at a point removed from the end of said body.
2; A pallet comprising a sheet' metal 1 body having lateral flangesiand an end reinforcing piece providing portions overa lying'and underlying an endlof said body portion, and a cross flange extending botw'eensaid lateral flanges acrosssaid'body portion at a point removed from the end of said. body, the ends of said cross flange bent to reinforce said lateral flanges; l
3. A pallet comprising a sheet metal body having lateral flanges and an end reuiforcing piece providing portions overlying and underlying an end of said body portion, and a cross flange extendin between said lateral flanges across said body portion at a point removed: from the end of said body, the ends of said cross flange bent to reinforce said lateral flanges and riveted thereto. 7
4. A pallet comprising a sheet metal body having lateral flanges terminating short of theends of said body, and an end reinforcing piece providing portions overlying and underlying an end of said bodyv portion and a cross flange extending between said lateral flanges across said body portion at a point removed from the end. of said body and substantially aligned with ends of said lateral flanges.
5. A pallet comprising a sheet metal body having lateral flanges, said flanges reinforced by reversely'bent edge portions,
a reinforcingpiece securedito an end of saidbody and providing a sheet metal cross reinforcement transverse to the general plane of said body and having its ends entered between said lateral flanges and said reversely bent edge portions.
6. A pallet comprising a sheet metal unitary with an end reinforcement providportions underl-ylng and overlyingthe ing end of said body. 7
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
