Specification of Letters Iatent. Pithenijd npl". 25',
Application sied May i4, 1921. seriai no. 469,625'.
Vexact description. of. the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it yappertains to make and use the same.
This inventionl relates to a starter o-r an 'auxiliary propelling means for an elevator and is shown particularly as applied 'toa cu=p belt elevator used in grain elevators. The elevators, particularly the cup beltgrain elevators, often become choked and the motion thereof stopped. When such choking occurs it has been necessary -lior the operator to go into the basement or. pit atk the bottom of the elevator and dig out the grain, which :grain-must be carried up out of vthe pan from which' the elevatorA normallytakes it. The pan or ,pit ,isv usually small and dusty and a disagreeable Aplace yto work.
It is an object of the invention, therefore, t0 provide means by which such a chokedelevator may be started from a position at the side of the leg or housing of the elevator.
It is a further object of the invention to provide suoli means which is constructed to be fastened to legs of various sizes and which can. be readily removed from one leg to the'l other.
lt is still anotherobject of the invention to provide such a device for starting-'the elevating means that when sai-d mea-ns is started it will offer no obstruction to the continued operation of the'elevator. v
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will ully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a view in liront elevation of the device as applied to an elevator leg;
'.Fig. 2 is a central vertical section oi, the device; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the device.
Referring' to the drawings, an elevating means comprising a belt l and attached buckets 2. is shown, which elevator is enclosed in the housing or leg The side of the leg illustrated in Figs. l and 3 is that between the upwardly moving and `can swing upwardly.
downwardly moving sides of the: elevator,
the belt lv moving upwardly, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. The side of the leg'or housing is out away at ,the points 3a to pro'- vide an opening which is designed, either to receive a cover 'or the device or: the present invention. l rThe latter comprises upper and lower vtransversely extending 4 members 4' which are provided at each end with cen'- trally disposed longitudinally ffextend'ing slots'ila. The members L,Lar'e suitably spaced y "to be received inthe opening in the housing wall and are centrally connected by a bar 5 extending therebetween. The member 6 levtends transversely across the housing between the members t and is provided with a Vcentral member 6a having a channel therethrough through. whichextends the member o. 0n its inner sid'e the member "6 ha'spi'voted thereto, arms v7,"and said member has projecting' ledges 6 extending underf the members 7 on Iwhich `the members Z rest and on which they Vare held in substantially -hori-l zontlal position., As indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 8, jthe innere'nds of the member 7 to the h`ousing` by lag scrre'i'vs 8 which extend through the slots 4, and into the sides-'olf the ho'usin lt may be stated that when the device ynot in use the saine lag screws are used to fasten the -cover tothe housing. From the upper sideof the members-hextendspaced, members 6" willich Iare -connected by a cross piece 6C. which isalso provided Awithv a. channel through which the member 5 extends.v A pulley or'bl'ock and tackle device indicated asl() is secured to the side 'of the housing abovevtheA upper member. lLanda rope or cablenfiember Vll is secured to fastening members projecting from the `member 6C and-extends' `overthe Adevice 'l0 and then downwardly to a convenient position in reach olj the opera-tor. When the device is disposed in position on The device is secured 4 the housingthe belt l of the elevator. extends between the inner end of the member 7 and the member 6. which latter member is pro- ,Y i
vided with a. channel to receive t-he same.
If the elevator becomes choked and stopped, the device will be placed in position on the housing, as shown and described and the cable ll arranged in positionv as shown. Power is then applied to the outer end of the cable 11 which is pulled downwardly and the members 6 and 6at will be pulled upwardly on the member 5. The
lio
' place.
member 7 will engage under the lower edge of the buckets 2 and an upward pull will thus be exerted on the belt l. tion will be continued until the elevator is again started. lt will be noted that the buckets can pass the arms 7, so that the members 6 can Vbe .lowered past the buckets after having pulled the same upwardly by the arms 7 swinging upwardly, as shown in 3. After the elevator has been started running in normal operation, the device can be removed and the cover placed on the housing.v lt will be noticed that by provision or the slots 4a and the lengths ot the members 4, that the device can be applied to housing legs of various sizes.
F rom the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and efficient means for re-starting a choked elevator. The device is simple and can be readily constructed and transferred to the desired It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, vdetails and arrangement of the device without departing from the scope of applicants invention which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
