Facing strips or plaits are usually stitched to a shirt front on a machine provided with two needles, which needles are widely spaced so as to simultaneously form the line of stitching n and a,joining the facing strips and joining the facing strips to the body fabric. These needles in machines adapted for this purpose some times vary slightly in the distance which they are set apart.

The present invention is directed to a folder which is particularly adapted for folding and directing the outer facing strip, which folder is formed so that it may be adjusted to properly direct'the strip to the needles with the spacing between the needles as found in the machine to which the folder is attached. The folder is also capable of adjustment so that the margin between the lines of stitching and the respective adjacent folded edges in the facing strip may be varied, as above noted.

Attached to the work-support is a guide 8 for the under facing strip f. This guide is similar to that shown in the patent to De Nike, 7 90.560, granted May 23rd, 1905, and forms no part ofthe present invention, eXT cept as it is used to direct the under facing` strip so that it may be simultaneously stitched with the outer facing strip. The edges of this under facing strip are usually well within the marginal edges of the outer facing strip. i A

My invention is directed particularly to thel folder for directing and folding the outer facing strip or plait and the folder is indicated at 9 in the drawings. Said folder is mounted on a shank 10 which is carried by an arm 11. These slots extend in y. lines at right angles to the center line of the folder so that the section 9b may be adjusted later ally or in a direction at ri ht angles to the center line through the folder, by loosening the screws 22 and 23 and moving the section on the. supporting shank. This arm 30a overlies the space between the plates and prevents the material from bending, buckling or working up between the plates.

At the delivery end of the folder, the plate 27V has an extension b=which-overliesjthe plate 30 and likewise prevents the material at the delivery end of 'thefolder from buckling, or

bending or working up between the'plates. The plates 274 and 30 atthe' receiving end of the folder are set back from the ends of the plates 26 and 29. The plates 26 and29 areformed with upturned sections Lw-bleh are adapted to guideth'eside `edges'jof the facing strip as it passes intothefolder, said facing strip being received flat and unfolded. As it passes along the folder the side edges of the facing strip or plait will be gradually turned underneath, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and as this facing strip leaves the folder its side edges will be folded and they will be guided by the folder to the needles. rlhe arm 11 may be adjusted endwise of the stud l2 by shifting the collars l5 and 17 carrying the stop arms. This permits thevsetting of the folder so as to obtain the desired margin m between the line of stitching n" and the adjacent folded edge-of the facing strip. The

section 9? of the folder is then set in the manner above described so as to obtain` the proper margin m between the line of 'stitching a and the adjacent folded edge 1n the facing strip or plait. In other words, by this adjustment of the folderthese two margins fm and m may be made alike and may be varied within certain limits, as desired.

It sometimes happens that the facing Y strips' vary slightly in width and my im-Y proved 'folder may be-"readily adjustedy so as to accommodate strips of different widths by the adjustments above described.

The' essential features of my improved folder consist in the bodily adjustment ofl one section of the folder relative to the other and the shifting of the folder relative to the needles so as to secure the functions above described. i

Itis obvious that-minor changes in the details of construction maybe made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the'appended'claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A sewing machine including in combination, spaced needles, a folder for directing afacing strip to said'needles, a bracket,

an -arm secured to the bracket, a shank se-V cured to said arm and support-ing said folder, said arm being adjustable on said bracket in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal center of the folder, said folderv including twor sections, each of which consists of spaced guiding plates shaped so as to fold underneath the side edges of the facing' strip, and means for securing one of said sections to the shank, whereby the same may be adjusted bodily and laterally relative to the other section.
