Be it known that I. EDWARD ELI EAGLE. of Selma, Alabama,- United States of America, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Apparatus for Storing, Measuring, and Cutting Linoleum, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for storing, measuring and cutting linoleum, oil cloth and the like of the type constructed with one or more rotary discs or stands for supporting the roll of material, rotary discs or stands for withdrawing and re-rolling the fabric and a movable rail with top carriers which engage the upper ends of the rolls and maintain them in an upright position.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved machine and more especially means for unrolling and re-rolling the fabric.
Apparatus of this type described made in accordance with this invention is characterized in that the movable rail, which engages the upper ends of the rolls and maintains them in an upright position is provided with an adjustable expanding top'carrier adapted to engage thetop of the hollow centre of the roll to be unwound and an adjustable gripping device for withdrawing and re-rolling the fabric. The machine may be suitably secured to ensure its steadiness.
A cutting device may be disposed upon the machine for cutting the fabric longitudinally, and adjustable gripping devices may be disposed upon one or more supports and upon the disc or stand on which the roll being rewound is disposed for gripping the fabric during re-rolling.
Referring to the accompanying draw- 1ngs:-
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one form of device made in accordance with this invention. I
Fig. 2 is a plan of the form of device shewn in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the form of device shewn in Fig. 1.
Fig. i is an elevation of the adjustable expanding top carrier shewn in Figs. 1 to 3.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the form of gripping device shewn in Figs. 1 to 3 on the movable rail.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the form of the adjustable gripping device on the rewinding rotary disc or stand shewn in Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of a cutter and gripping device for longitudinal cutting.
In the drawings a is the base upon which stand supports Z) 6 carrying a top 0. Between the supports 6 6 slides a movable rail (Z which is kept in position by guides e f, disposed thereon which engage the supports Z) 6. The supports 6 b are fitted with racks g g. and the movable rail d is provided with a shaft h, pinions e 2', engaging with the racks g g, and also a wheel j by which the movable rail cl canbe raised and lowered.
The movable rail (Z maybe counterbalanced by weighted d and is supported by a pawl is disposed thereon and adapted to engage the appropriate teeth of one of the racks 9 when the rail is raised or lowered to its required height. The pawl k is actuated by a lever m to which is attached a brake n for checking the descent of the movable rail d. For supporting the fabric tobe unrolled a rotary support of suitable length 0 provided with an upright oreboss not shewn, is disposed upon the base a, and an adjustable expanding top carrier is dis posed upon the movable rail d.
The top carrier 79 comprises a screw threadedsupport Q carrying a rotatable'base plate 7' and an internally threaded collar 5, six side plates hinged at their lower ends to the base plate r and at their upper ends to arms a which are hinged at their other ends to the collar 8. The eXpa-ndible top carrier 79 as shewn in the accompanying drawings has six sides, but it may well be provided with a smaller or larger number if desired the larger number being preferable.
For the re-rolling of the fabric, on a rotary disc or stand o, supported by its bosses 15 on the gear wheel 13 which is (11s posed pivotally upon the base a is carried by an adjustable gripping device in the form of an expansible tapering sleeve 1) and a top carrier gripping device to upon the movable rail 01. On the gripping device o are mounted a hub member at, of eccentric shape, a jaw member 2, pivoted against said hubmember and a screw member a passing through a collar 2 and adapted to secure the j aw member 1 against the hub-member w. The top carrier gripping device to is disposed upon a support 3 constructed with 1 thereon.
a cone-shaped hub-member 4, jaw-member 5 pivoted against said hub-member, and a V screw member 6 passing throu h the said jaw member and said hub-mem er and se 5 cured with a nut 7, the screw member 6 being adapted to hold the jaw-member to the hub-member. The jaws and, if desired, the hub-members of both the gripping devices aforementioned may be provi ed with teeth.
Disposed upon the base a is a driving shaft- 8 which passes through a collar 9 in the movable rail 03. The shaft is rotated by suitable gearin l0 and carries gear wheels 11, 12 at its ower and upper ends which engage with gear wheels 13, 14 carried on the support 15 of disc '0 and the support 3 of the gri ping device w.
he supports q and 3 pass through a collar16 and 17 ,respectively on the movable rail d and are attached to rocking levers 18 and 19 disposed upon the adjacent supports 7) b and operated by the handles 20, 21 to raise or lower the gripping devices 12 w.
The fabric 22 may be passed between the rollers 23 of a measuring machine 24 of known construction during re-rolling.
A vertical straight edge 25 is mounted in the centre of the frame to serve as a knifeguide when the fabric 22 is cut.
Between the ripping devices 0 and w mag be dispose adjustably a support 25 grippers 26 and, betwen the base a and top rail 03: cutters 28, and roller 29 provided w th grooves .30 may be disposed for cutting the fabric, longitudinally into .jsuitable widths; .They may be assembled as shewn in Fig. 7 which also shews how the fabric 22 may be cut as long as the slit 31, the grooves 30,5erving to keep the cutter 28 true.
. Thecutter 28 and roller 29may .be secured to the support 27 by screw actuated clamps 32. 2
In operation, the roll of fabric 22 to be support 0 the movable bar d is suitably lowered or raised and the fabric secured thereto by the projectionthereon passing up into the hollow centreof the roll and the adjusable carrier device p which is pressed down lnto the hollow interior of the roll at its upperend by the rocking lever 18 and handle 20 and is adjusted to the dimensions of the em hollow centre by rotating the carrier p rpund ltsscrew threaded support 9 by which means the side plates at are adjusted to the reuired d mensions; The loose end of the abric is led between the rollers 23 of the nieasunng machine and thence to the grippmg devices and secured against the cones 1w by the jaws and screws disposed p V p The gearing 10 is operatedand thereby the gear wheels 11, 12, 13,14 and so the material is re-rolled, measured and may 65 cutoff at anydesired length by a knife measured and cut is placed upon the rotary and the straight edge, or by the device for longitudinal cuttin What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
