To all 10720771 it vim concern-t Be it known that we, rlLsnnn it. h. BERGER and GEORGE J. Ilorrnixx, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough of Brooklymcounty of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shearing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
lVhile applicable to shearing devices for other purposes, our improvements are designed more especially for shears used in detaching coupons from interest bearing documents, and for analogous purposes, where rectangular severance is required or desirable,our object being to provide means whereby a single cutting operation will suffice to detach a rectangular coupon, section, certificate or other incidental sectional part of a bond, or other commercial paper,-from the rest of the sheet, thereby saving time and labor, particularly where the necessary clippings are numerous, as after the accruing of interest on bonds held in quantity in safety vaults, etc. Such cou pons or adjunctive parts of a bond or docu ment of the character designated being almost invariably of oblong rectangular out line, an ordinary pair offscissors, or shears, has to be used twice for each section detached, also involving the turning of the document to effect one cut at right angles to the other, the resultant inconvenience, and the time lost in the operations, being disadvantageous in proportion to the number of documents to be thus manipulated.
We obviate these difliculties by our invention which consists essentially in the specific combination and arrangement of parts hcrcin described and claimed,a distinctive feature being the provision of duplex rectangular cutting blades pivotally connected at both extremities thereof, the inner blade being formed integral and continuous, and the other or outer blade being formed in two disconnectible sections, to facilitate the sharpening and truing of the cutting edges certain minor and adjunctive features and details of construction being also included in our invention, all as hereinafter fully set forth.

For convenience of description we herein designate the main or larger cutting blades a, a, as the longitudinal blades, they being presumably but not necessarily of greater length than what we for a like reason des' ignate as the transverse cutting blades Z), Y),
which are presumably although not necessarily shorter than the aforesaid longitudinal blades a, 6/. Coupons, and the, detachable certilicates, tickets, and the like, are usually of elongate rectangular configuration. and hence we provide the longitudinal cutting blades (4, a, for the severance of the lengthwise boundaries of such sections, and the transverse cutting blades 6, Z), for the severance of the end or cross extension boundaries of such incidental sections of a document of the character designated.
The innerblades a, '6, are of integral construction because their cutting edges may be ground true and sharpened with facility when unattached to the other blades (1, b, but said outer blades a, b, are separable the one from the other, as otherwise it would be practically impossible in a commercial sense to finish their cutting edges with accuracy at their angle of conjunction. In other words. while it is comparatively easy to sharpen the outer edges of a rectangle, it is very difiicult to sharpen the inner edges of a rectangular structure especially at the apex of the angle. Hence, while we make the inner blades (1,, Z), in one piece, we make the outerblades a, 7), separate, and opera tively couple the conjunctive ends thereof by detachable means, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The basic ends of the longitudinal blades (1, a, are pivotally connected by a fulcrum bolt 0, and nut c, or other equivalent me chanical expedient. In hke manner the basic ends of the transverse blades a, b, are pivotally connected by a fulcrum bolt (Z, and nut d, or equivalent means. Tension spring lates e, e,are interposed between the heat s of the bolts 0, d, and the adjacent basic sides or hub sections of the blades a, a, and b, b, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, for the purpose of holding said basic hub sections of the blades firmly together and insuring the perfect alignment of the cutting edges thereof.
Normally the blades are held open and apart to a prescribed degree by the'resilience of a spring 8, acting in conjunction with a stop or fixed gauge g. Thus in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, of the drawings a convoluted expansion spring 8, is shown as functioning in this respect, the ends of which are seated in and secured to the outer ends of the longitudinal blades a, a, while in Fig, 6, a retractile spring 8, attached to an arm a", of the movable longitudinal blade at, and to the base board It, performs the same function. The stop or gauge g, may obviously be formed and positioned in various ways without departing from the spirit and intent of our invention in this respect provided it restricts the divergence and separation of the cutting edges against the resistance of the opening spring -such normal degree of opening being provided for the insertion of the paper to be out between the blades. Thus, in the drawings the auge stop 9, is shown as attached to the hu portion of the blade 7), and positioned between spaced apart shoulders z, i, on the hub portion of the blade 6, although obviously the stop g, might be on the hub portion of the blade 6, and the limiting shoulders 2', 2., on the hub portion of the blade b,-or the degree of se aration of the cutting edges might be ot erwisc prescribed with like results.
The conjunctive ends of the longitudinal inner blade (6, and of the transverse inner blade b, may be detachably coupled together in any appropriate manner, that shown in the drawings being by way of exemphfication only, as we do not limit ourselves to the specific construction shown in this respect, in which a stud (1%, on the end of the longitudinal blade at, protrudes into a slot 71, in the'opposed end of the transverse blade 5, as shown more particularly in 3, of the drawings. In order to insure this normal engagement of the parts named (the stud a", with the sides of the slot 5*) we provide atension spring 29, the opposite ends of which are connected, one to a stud (1. on the longitudinal blade and the other to a stud 72 on the transverse blade I), as shown more particularly in Fig, l, of the drawings. By this or equivalent means the blades a, b, are for all practical purposes jointed together so as to work and operate in unison under ordinary conditions of use, while at the same time provision is made for the detachment of the said blades for resharpening as and for the reasons hereinbefore set forth.
In order to obviate the possibility of any space at the angle of juncture between the cutting edges of the blades a, b, and insure continuity and conjunction of cutting edges,
manipulation of the device; f, Fi 6, being a somewhat larger bearing plate by means of which the outer blades a, I), ma be depressed with relation to the inner b ades a, 7), when our shearing deviceis permanently mounted on a support it.
The modification illustrated in F ig. 7, provides simply for the mounting of the longitudinal blades a, a, on shear handles in a manner well known in the art,-the said longitudinal blades a, a, carrying the afore said transverse blades 5, b, as shown in Fig. l, of the drawings.
lVhen ordinary shears are used in cutting ofi coupons or like supplementary parts of bonds or documents, care must be taken to have the transverse or shorter out even approximately at right angles to the main or longitudinal cut, otherwise both the document and the part severed therefrom may be mutilated. or disfigured more or less, and hence heretofore time and skill were requisite to attain satisfactory detachment in perfect alignment with the prescribed boundaries; whereas by the use of our rectangular cutting implement correct and accurate allgnment is assured at a single operation,
and the time and labor involved is ma:
terially reduced. 7
As compared with the use of a square or straight edge for the severance'of coupons,
etc, our rectangular shearing device is still more advantageous, as we obviate labor and inconvenience involved in holding down of the square or straight edge on the paper, placed, on a fiat surface, and the danger of tearing the paper in irregular manner. At best the square or straight edge, when used for the purpose, leaves a ragged, unseemly edge on both document and part detached. V
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
l. .A. shearing device of the character designated, comprising a pair of pivotally connected blades and a pair'oii transversely po sitioned blades operatively connected there with and also pivotally connected together, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades for the purpose described.
2. A shearing device of the character designated, comprising a pair of pivotally connected blades and a pair of transversely positioned blades operatively connected therewith and also pivotally connected together, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, together with elastic resilient means for normally holding said cutting blades in open relationship, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades for the purpose described.

A shearing device of the character designated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades and transverse cutting blades also pivotally connected to each other and connected operatively with said longitudinal blades and positioned at right angles thereto, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades for the purpose described. 7

A shearing device of the character designated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades and transverse cutting blades also pivotally connected to each other and connected operatively with said longitudinal blades and positioned at right angles thereto, and elastic coupling and ten sioning means disposed angularly with rela tion to and connecting the movable blades, together with elastic resilient means for normally holding said cutting blades in open relationship, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades for the purpose described.

A shearing device 01 the character designated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades, and transverse cut ting blades also pivotally connected to each other and connected operatively with said longitudinal blades and positioned at right angles thereto, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, elastic resilient means for normally holding said cutting blades in open relationship, and means for limiting such normal divergence of the said cutting blades, said elastic con-- pling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly at tached to the blades, for the purpose described. a

A shearing device of the character designated, comp-rising pivotally connected lon gitudinal cutting blades, one of which is formed integral with a transverse cutting blade, and another transverse cutting blade pivotally connected with the first named transverse cutting blade and coupled operatively with the other longitudinal cutting blade, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades, for the purpose described.

A shearing device of the character designated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades, one of which is formed integral with a transverse cutting blade, and another transverse cutting blade pivotally connected with the first named transverse cutting blade and coupled operatively with the other longitudinal cutting blade, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, together with elastic resilient means: for normally holding said cutting blades in open rela tionship, and means for limiting such normal divergence of the said cutting blades, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades, for the purpose described.

A shearing device of the character des ignated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades, one of which is formed integral with a transverse cutting blade, and another transverse cutting blade pivotally connected with the first named transverse cutting blade and coupled operatively with. the other longitudinal cutting blade by means of a stud on the end of one blade fitting in a slot in the end oi the other blade, and elastic coupling and'tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, said elastic coupling and tensioning means being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached to the blades, for the purpose described.

A shearing device 01": the character des ignated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades, one of which is formed integral with a transverse cutting blade, and another transverse cutting blade pivotally connected with the first named transverse cutting blade and coupled operatively with the other longitudinal cutting blade by means of a stud on the end of one blade fitting in a slot in the end of the other blade, and a spring disposed angularly to and connecting the said coupled ends of the blades, said spring being endwise extensible and having its ends fixedly attached tothe blades, for the purpose described.

A shearing device of the character designated, comprising pivotally connected longitudinal cutting blades, the inner blade of which is formed integral with a transverse cutting blade, another and outer transverse cutting blade pivotally connected with the first named transverse cutting blade and coupled operatively with the other and exterior longitudinal cutting blade, and an extension on the end of the latter overlapping the cuttin edge of the said inner transverse cutting bide which is integral with said. inner longitudinal cutting blade, and elastic coupling and tensioning means disposed angularly with relation to and connecting the movable blades, for the purpose described.
