UNITED STATES PATENT ONFFICE.
WILLIAM S. MUNGER, OF LAWNDALE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO TODD E. LACKYARD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
QUICK-ACTING VISE.
Application filed. March 15, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. MUNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawndale, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quick-Acting Vises, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a device having improved means whereby the moving jaw of the device may be quickly adjusted with relation to the statlonary jaw and then moved into clamping engagement with the work by means of the usual operating mechanism.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a front elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectionon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The stationary jaw of the device may be mounted upon a suitable table or like support 1, and said jaw includes a usual base 2 secured to the support by means of bolts 3 and having the longitudinal bore 4 with the jaw member 5 projecting from said base above the bore and at the front end of the base.
A support for the movable jaw of the device is received in bore 4 and is shown as a bar 6 of sufficient length to permit of the desired adjustments of the movable jaw relative to the fixed jaw. The supporting bar is provided with recesses 7 along one face of the same and a pin 8 received through the base of the stationary jaw is adapted to engage in any one of said recesses for locking the supporting bar in adjusted positions relative to the jaw 5. The pin 8 may be provided with a usual operating head 9,,and a spring 10 preferably surrounds the shank of the pin and is held in position by a suitable threaded collar 11 so as to normally yieldably urge the pin into engagement with one of the notches 7. It will be understood that by retracting the pin, the supporting bar 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No, 452,563.
may be readily adjusted back and forth with relation to jaw 5.
The movable jaw of the device'is carried by supporting bar 6 and includes a base 12 having a bore 13 in which the end of the supporting bar is received, and a jaw 14 projecting from base 12 and co-operating with jaw 5 to form'the device. The movable jaw 18 adjusted with relation to bar 6 by an operating connection comprising a bolt 15 extending into the bore of the movable j aw and retained in position by an end plate 16. The head of this bolt projecting outwardly from the movable jaw is provided with a usual operating rod 17 for turning said bolt. The inner end of the bolt makes threaded engagement with a bore 18 in the end of supporting bar 6 so that rotations of the bolt will move the jaw 14 back and forth with relation to supporting bar 6. y
In practice it will be understood that the movable jaw is first quickly adjusted with relation to the work to be clamped, by withdrawing pin 8 and sliding supporting bar 6 back or forth until the movable jaw is in approximate clamping position. The pin is thenrelased so that its spring may project it into one of the notches 7 in order to lock the supporting bar with relation to the fixed jaw, and the movable jaw is then clamped against the work by adjusting said movable jaw with relation to the supporting bar through rotations of bolt 15.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claime What is claimed is:
A vise comprising a fixed jaw, a support slidable through the base of the same toward and away from said jaw, means for retaining said support in adjusted positions comprising a co-operating pin and recesses upon said aw and support, a moving jaw slidable upon said support, and operating means for said moving jaw including a threaded bolt journaled in said moving jaw andengaging a co-operating threaded bore in said sup ort.
In testimony whereof I have signe my name to this speoification.
WILLIAMS. MUNGER.
