UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHOVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed January 14, 1920. Serial No. 351,455.
To all whom it may cancer-'21 Be it known, that I, Enwiinn IIANFF, subject of the King of England, residing at 55 Rocky Lane, Anfield, Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, England, late of 71 Hathrley Street, Princes Park, Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spades, shovels, trowels, scoops, and the like, and has for its object to enhance their longevity.
As now commonly constructed, the front of a spade, shovel, trowel, scoop, and the like-particularly a shovel of the type used in householdsfrequently becomes broken during use.
According to the present invention, the front portion of the blade of the tool is thickened, either during the process of manufacture or formation thereof, or by means of a metal piece welded on to the underside of the blade proper, so as to be integral and solid therewith.
l referably, such thickening commencing at the front or edge, increases into wedge like or taper formation and then decreases until it merges into the normal thickness, or the blade, this wedge-like or tapering por tion is, in effect, added to the under-face of the blade, so that the upper face thereof is plain, or as usual.
If sides are formed out of a blade, the thickened front portion, when bent, strength.- ens the sides.
I will further describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings which illustrate its application to a domestic shovel.
Fig. l is a rear view of the shovel.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 3 a cross section, taken as on line A. A Fig. 1. i
a generally designates a metal shovel the front portion of the blade being thickened at b in the course of manufacture, such thickening, commencing from the front or edge of the shovel, increases into wedgelike formation and then decreases until it merges into the normal thickness of the blade: said wedge-like or tapering portion. being, in effect, added to the underside of the shovel, so that the upper face thereof is fiat, as usual. Said thickened front portion also forms portions 0 of the upstanding sides 0.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A. shovel having a blade provided with outstanding side walls and the underside of the front port-ion of said blade provided with an integral thickened portion commencing from the front edge of the blade and increasing into wedge like formation to provide a long beveled wall and then decreasing to form a short beveled wall adjoining the blade, the thickened portion extending transversely of the'blade and on to the side walls thereof.
in testimony whereof I my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. \VALKER, EMILY BURNETT.
