JOHN G. IMFELD, or ROCHESTER, NEW Y RK, ASSIGNOR T0 vacuum OIL coMrAnY,
or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION on NEW YORK.
BARREL-HOOZP-LDRIVING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. IMFELD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-I-loop-Driving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to barrel hoop driving machines, and an object thereof is to provide in connection with such ma chine a kick-off mechanism operating in timed relation to the hoop driving mechanism to kick the barrel off the support after the hoop driving mechanism has operated.
.To this and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a hoop driving machine constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the barrel in position ready to be kicked off after the completion of the hoop driving operation.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the kick-off mechanism in the position it occupies immediately after kickingoff the barrel;
Fig.3 is a fragmentary section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the connection between the hoop driving mechanism and the kick-off mechanism;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the guide for the weighted lever of the trip mechanism;
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the angled lever which connects with the kick-01f device;
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section of the trip lever; and
Fig. Sis a sectional view of the trip lever in a position during its return movement.
The barrel 1 is supported upon a support 2 and a hoop driving mechanism of any suitable form operates upon the hoop of such barrel. In this instance, the hoop driving mechanism is supported by 7 guides 3 and rods 3 projected upwardly on opposite sides of the support 2 and connected by a head frame 1 at their upper ends. Operating on the guides 3 is a driving head 5" which may be moved in any suitable manner as by a screw 6 operating in the head and turned alternately in opposite directions through a Specification Of Letters Patent.

bevel gear 7. This driving headcarries a number of driving devices 8 preferably in the form of double arm levers pivoted at 9 to the head and having weights 10 thereon which tend to move their engaging ends 11 toward the center of the head 5. The other arms of these double arm levers cooperate with a cam ring 12 which may be adjusted to limit the inward movement of the engaging ends 11 and hold them properly positioned so as to pass over the end of the barrel. At the same time it permits the engaging ends to swing outwardly as the driving head moves downwardly. The ring may be turned to shift the engaging ends outwardly. No claim is made per 'se to the driving mechanism hereinbefore described.
The feature of this invention is a kick off mechanism operating in timed relation to the driving mechanlsm. This kick-off mechanism embodies preferably a kick-off device 15 which, in this instance, is in the form of a U-shaped member having its ends pivoted at 16 on opposite sides of the support -2-so as to swing above and below the supporting surface of said support. mally this kick-off device lies in its lowermost position, being preferably held in such position by a spring 17 which is connected at 18 to a lever 19, this lever being pivoted at 20 to brackets 21 supported to one side of the support 2. The upper end of this lever 19 is adjustably connected at 22 to a link 23, the latter in turn being pivotally connected at 24 to an angle lever 25 which is pivoted at 26 to guides 3. The angle lever'25 ispivotally connected at 28 to a link 29, the latter being in turn pivotally connected at30 to one arm ofthe kick-off device 15. The kickoff device is operated by a trip mechanism which, in this instance, comprises a trip device in the form of a lever 31 pivoted at 32 to a bracket 33 which by braces 34 connects with the bracket 21. This trip device has an end piece or portion 35 pivoted thereto at 36 and carrying a roller 37 which cooperates with a lateral arm 38 projected from the lever 19. The trip lever 31 turns about a different center from the lever 19 so that when the roller end of the trip lever 31 moves upwardly it will engage-the free end of the arm 38 and swing the lever 19 on its pivot, thus operating the kick-off device 15. On the return movement of the lever 31, the pivoted end 35 thereof carrying the roller Nor 36 so that no movement is produced in the lever 19. Movement of the'tripdevice 31 may be effected through a link 39 whichis pivoted at 40 to the trip lever 3L and at 41 to a double arm lever 42 which in turnis pivoted at 43 to a bracket 44 supported on one of the rods 3*. A weight 45 is mounted on the opposite end of the lever 42 so that the trip device 31 is normally held in the position shown in Fig. l. A guide 46 maydepend from the head 4 of the frame and a pin 47 may cooperate with that portion of the lever 42 operating in the guide so as to determine the initial position of the trip device 31, this pin being insertable in any one of the openings 48 provided in the gmde46. I
In order to effect movement of the trip device in timed relation to the driving head, the latter has an abutment 49 formed there on and cooperating with the lever 42 after the driving head 5 has moved upwardly to a certain position to carrythe driving device out of the path of the barrel. .It is apparent that the driving head 5 may move relatively to the lever42 so as to effect the driving action as well as the carrying of the, driving device out of the path of the barrel. By shifting the pin 47 in the proper opening 48 in the guide 46, the time at which the operation of the kiclcofi' device shall take place may be varied. -The operation of the invention will be understood from the foregoing, but it maybe summarized. as follows: f
The screw 6. is rotated in the proper direotion to cause the descent of the head 5, thus carrying the driving device downwardly and causing the hoop to be driven onto the barrel. After this action takes place, the screw 6 is rotated in the opposite direction, and when the head 5 has carried the driving device above the upper end of the barrel, then the abutment 49 will cooperate with the lever 42 and turn said lever on its pivot 43. This swings the trip device in order to cause the roller 37 to cooperatewith the arm 38 so that the lever 19 will; swing on its pivot and carry the kick-off device upwardly into engagement with the barrel so. as to eject the barrel from the machine. Later the roller 32 passes out of engegement with the arm 38, permitting the lever 19 and the kick-oil device 15 to return to their normal positions. Upon the descent of the driving head=5, the trip lever willm'ove, in the opposite direction and the portion 35 will swing on the pivot 36, permitting the roller 37 to pass the arm 38 without producing any movement in thelever 1,9. or the kick-off device 15.
Fmmhthe foregoing it will be. seen that there has provided a hoop driving main which been incorporated a hick-oil mechanism operated in timed relation to the hoop driving mechanism. This hoop driving mechanism preferably-embodies a hick-oil device'to which there is connected a lever engaged by a pivoted trip device, the trip device acting on the lever so as lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A barrel-hoop driving machine comprising a horizontal support on which the barrel is adapted to be vertically arranged, a head movable vertically above said support, driving devices movable with the head toward and from thefbarrel on the support and also having a movement relatively to the head, a kick-off device operable to displace the barrel horizontally from the support, and mechanism for operating said kick-off device, controlled by said head in its movement away from the barrel, in order to efiect the operation of the kick-off device after the driving devices have been carried outof the pathof the barrel by said head. 1

A barrel hoop driving machine comprising a support for'the barrel,-a hoop driving mechanism for operating upon a barrel on the support, and a kick-off device of substantially-U-shaped form pivotally mounted at opposite ends below the supporting surface of the support and movable upwardly to kick a barrel off the. support after the hoop driving mechanism has operated,
