Description

W. E. BASSETT.
MAT HOLDING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED NOV-'19, 192i.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922;
lz'71/zz1 for y- 11B assafi 7 6 M: W Z1: iZi/a r11 e y UNITED STATES WALTER E. BASSE'IT, 0F MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
MAT-HOLDING- DEVICE.
Application filed November 19, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER E. Bassnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mat-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to mat-holding devices; and an object thereof is to provide a device of that character adapted to hold a mat against displacement and having .a scraper portion; a further object is to provide such a device so constructed that water, etc. collecting in the mat held in the device may readily drain away.
These and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the device hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which r-- Figure 1 is a front edge view of my matholding device attached to the running board or step of an automobile;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, the mat being removed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal. sectional .view of the same, with the mat therein, taken on a vertical plane corresponding to line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the same, with the mat therein, taken on a vertical plane corresponding to line 44 of Figures 2 and 3; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a corner portion of the device.
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawings and for detailed description in the body of this specification, a mat 1 is held in my mat-holding device, designated generally 2, which is secured on the step or running board 3 or" an automobile. The principal portion of my device is integrally-formed of suitable metal. as aluminum, and comprises a part a extending around the edges of the mat to hold it against edgewise displacement, and having a flange 5 extending inwardly over the top of the mat adyacent its edges, as part1cu- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Serial No. 516,439.
larly seen in Figures 8 and 4, to hold the mat against displacement upwardly. I scraper part for use 1n removing dirt from the shoes prior to cleaning them on the mat is formed integrally with the part 4 and has a body portion 6 spaced outwardly from the front side of the part t, said part at and the body portion 6 being thus separated by the space 7, which space is outside the outer edge 8 of the running board or step 8, the body portion 6 of the scraper being integrally connected with the part 4 by arms 9.
To permit water, etc. which may collect on the mat to drain away, the part 4 of the device has openings or notches 10 extending inwardly-outwardly therethrough at its bottom edge through which openings or notches water may flow out; and a part 11 desirably perforated at 12, and in form a metal sheet, undulary in cross section as shown in Figure 3, lies inside the part 4, and beneath and supports the mat as seen in Figures 3 and i. The part at has inwardly extending lugs 13 whereby the device is fastened in place, as by bolts 14.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details oi"? construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbei'ore described.
I claim:
1. In a mat-holding device; a part extending around the edges of the mat and adapted tohold the same against edgewise displacement; a part, undulary in cross section, beneath and supporting the mat and inside the first-mentioned part.
2. In a mat-holding device; a part extending around the edges of the mat and adapted to hold the same against displacement and having openings extending inwardly-outwardly therethrough; a perforated part, undulary in cross section. beneath and supporting the mat and inside the first-mentioned part.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids. Michigan, this 27th day of October, 1921.
lVALTER E. BASSETT.
