To all whom it may Concern.
Be it known that I, SIMON ADDE, engineer, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Griingesberg, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Plastic Explosive, of which the following is a specification.
In my British Patent Nr. 13373 of 1912 I have described an explosive, the basic mate-- rial of which consists of a liquid nitrocompound of an aromatic hydrocarbon gelatinized with nitrocellulose.
I have explained in that patent what I meant at that time by liquid nitrocompound} namely the liquid mother lye remaining from the crystallization of the different nitro-derivatives of the said aromatic hydrocarbons. These mother lyes and residues from the distillation are, however, composed of the different isomeres of the saidnitrocompounds and to a less part of higher nitromethane-derivatives, having a very low freezing point.
These mother lyes and residues. from the distillation are composed of different nitro compounds and their chemical constitution is not fully known by the scientists.
Lately, however, the chemists have succeeded, by conducting the nitration process in special ways, in separating several nitroderivatives from these mother lyes, said derivatives having an exact chemical constitution and of which some are solid while others have a fluid, oily consistence. Thus, for example, there are at present known six different mono-derivatives of the nitro-xylol. Amongst these derivatives two are solid, whereas the remaining four form oily fluids having a low freezing point.
I have found that all these fluid nitroderivatives of the aromatic hydrocarbons are very good solvents of nitrocellulose, forming therewith a blasting gelatine, which has about the same properties as the well known gelatine of nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose, but difi'ers from the latter in that it freezes only at a very low temperature even if a comparatively great percentage of nitroglycerine is added. Moreover, my new blasting gelatine has great stabilit and is very little sensible to heating and to mechanical shocks and the like.

and also for the purpose of still further lowering the freezing point of the explosive, an addition of a small percentage of alcohol is very effective, I have found.
Especially methyl alcohol being an excellent solvent of nitrocellulose is suitable for I. For blasting z'n op'en shaft mines.

What I claim is 1. A plastic explosive compound of low freezing point, consisting solely of a liquid nitro-derivative of exact chemical constitution produced from an aromatic hydcarbon, other than benzol and toluene, said nitroderivative gelatinized with nitrocellulose.
2. A plastic explosive compound as specified in claim 1, in which nitroglycerin has been added.
3. A plastic explosive compound, as specified in claim 1, in which a small percentage of alcohol has been added.
4. A plastic explosive compound, as specified in claim 1, in which a small percentage of methyl alcohol has been added.

15. A plastic explosive compound consisting solely of nitroxylene and nitroglycerin, gelatinized with nitro-cellulose.
16. A plastic explosive compound as specified in claim 14, containing also a small percentage of alcohol.
17. A plastic explosive compound as specified. in claim 14, containing also oxygen yieldin substances, carbonaceous materials, a meta capable of increasing the temperature of explosion, and silicon.
