Description

coves snrron'r.
To all w 7mm 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HUrroN, a cltizen of the United States, residlng at Bay Shore, Long Island, in the county oi Suffolk and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cover supports and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient support especially adapted to be used upon graphephones, talking machines, and other devices of similar character.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient cover support which will automatically cooperate with the cover so as to support the same in a. raised position and which may be also easily released, for permitting the cover to drop to a closed position.
lllith theseand other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will. be hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1
In the drawings; i q
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a portion of a talking machine showing the cover raised to an open position, in full lin'cs,'the closed position being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the cover support.
Figure 8 is a section taken on line of Fig. 2, and
Figure 1 is a section taken on line ie-4; of Fig. 2.
By referring tofthe drawings. it will be seen that 5 designates the body of the talking machine or other receptacle upon which is secured a cover 6 by means of suitable hinges 7.- The cover supporting member 8 is pivotally secured within the cover 6 by means of a pivot pin 9, which pivot pin 9 extends through the inner end of the cover supporting member 8 and engages thev inner face of the cover 6. This cover supporting member 8 comprises an elongated body having a longitudinally extending, centrally arranged slot 10, within which slotlO is slidably mounted a releasing strip 11. The member 8 is also provided with a longitudinally extending slot 12, which slot- 12 extends transversely through the body of the membe 8 as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. This slot 12 terminates at its outer end Specification of Letters Patent. y atentgd 11,1513 28, Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No. 4.-08,268.
in'an oii'set secket13 having a supporting shoulder 14 formed at right angles to the slot 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This shoulder 11- is adapted to receive the suppor tlng screw 15, which supporting screw 15 is secured to the inner face 16 of the receptacle 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The sliding release member 11, comprises a substantially elongated flat strip which is provided with a plurality of elongated aligned slots 17, through which slots 1.? extend the pins 18, for limitingthe longitudinal movement of the strip 11. This strip 11 is provided with a longitudinally extending aperture 19 as clearly shown in Figure 2. this aperture 19 being adapted to register with the aperture 12 formed in the body of the supporting member 8. The longitudinally extending slot 19 terminates in an elfset socket 20 having a right angularly extending abutment wall 21 and an inclined wall 22., This right angularly extending abutment wall 21 is formed at the outer end. of the aperture 19 or slot 19 is clearly shown in Figure 2.
The operation of the device is as follows: The pinor screw 15 is secured to the receptaclc as shown and extended through lie slot 12 so as to alsoextendthrough the slot 19 ot' the sliding pin 11. When the pin 15 is in the inner end of the slot 12, the sliding strip 11 will be in a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. due to the fact that thepin 15 will engage the end 23 of the slot 19 and move the sliding strip 11 inwardly, thereby moving the abutment wall 21 to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. The slot 12 is provided with a curved portion 2-1 for the purpose of guiding the pin 15 into the pocket or socket as the pin 15 is moved longitudinally of the slot 12. As the cover 6 is raised to the position shown in Figure 1, the pin 15 will be guided into the pocket 20 and rest upon the shoulder 14-. TV hen it is desired to again close the cove;- 6, the cover may be raised slightly so that the pin 15 will abut against the abutment shoulder 21 and in this way move the sliding strip 11 longitudinally as the cover 6 is then again lowered, the pin 15 will ride upon the inclined guide way 22 and be directed into the slot 4 whereupon the cover 6 may continue to move to a closed position.
It of course should be understood that certain detailed changes in mechanical con struction may be made in the present device without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A cover support of the class described comprising a pivotally mounted body, said body provided with a longitudinally extending slot formed therein, and means slidably mounted within said body and adapted to engage means carried by the receptacle whereby the cover of a receptacle may be supported in an open position after once having been raised.
2. I11 combination with a receptacle, a cover, ot a cover support comprising a body provided with alongitudinally extending slot, a pin carried by said receptacle and adapted to work within said slot, said slot terminating at one end in an otfset shoulder adapted to receive said pin, whereby the cover will be supported in an open position when said cover support is moved to an upright position, and means slidable within said cover supportand adapted to engage said pin for throwing the same into said slot and permitting said cover to swing to a closed position.
3. In combination with a receptacle, a cover mounted thereon, a cover support pivotally mounted upon said receptacle, a pin carried by said receptacle, said sup port provided with a longitudinally extending slot having an offset shoulder formed at one end thereof, a sliding plate movable within said support and provided with a slot registering with said first mentioned slot, one end of said sliding member provided with an inclined otl'set wall adapted to engage said pin for throwing the same into said slot and permitting the swinging of said cover to a closed position.
a. In combination with a receptacle, a cover mounted thereon, of a cover supportcomprising an elongated body pivotally mounted upon said receptacle, said body provided with an elongated slot having an oiIset shoulder formed at one end, a pin adapted to work in said slot and rest upon said shoulder for holding said cover in an open position, a sliding plate movable within said body and provided with a longitudinally extending slot registering with said first mentioned slot and having an abutment wall at one end adapted to be engaged by the pin or said cover tor moving said plate longitudinally of said slot, said slot formed in said plate terminating in an inclined wall upon one side thereof, said inclined wall adapted to be brought into engagement with said pin whereby the pin will be directed into said lmigitudinally extending slot to swing to a closed position.
In combination with a receptacle, a cover mounted thereon, of a cover support comprising an elongated body pivotally mounted upon said receptacle, said body provided with an elongated slot having an offset shoulder formed at one end, a pin adaptedto' work in said slot and rest upon said shoulder for holding said cover in an open position, a sliding plate mounted upon said body, said sliding plate provided. with elongated apertures and pins carried by said body and working in said apertures for limiting the longitudinal movement of said sliding plate.
6. In combination with a receptacle, a cover mounted thereon, of a cover support comprising an elongated body pivotally mounted upon said receptacle, said body provided with an elongated slot having an offset shoulder formed at one end, a pin adapted to work in said slot and rest upon said shoulder for holding said cover in an open position, a sliding plate movable within saidfbody, said sliding plate provided with elongated apertures and pins carried by said body and working in said apertures for limiting the longitudinal movementot said sliding-plate.
In testimony whereof I attix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
