PULLEY.
Application filed April 26,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARGHIBALD T. Mo'rr. a citizen of the United States. residing at 'Indianapolis, in the county of 'll iarion,
the application of pressure.
State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in pulleys such as are used in power transmission, and especially those known as fibre pulleys, which are built upof sheets of paper or equivalent material.-
The object of my invention is to provide a pulley, the body of which is composed of laminations of paper or equivalent material, and having a cast iron hub adapted to be secured in the body of the pulley in manner that will effectually prevent displace ment, more fully hereinafter pointed out.
A further object is to provide a pulley, the hub of which has a flange and longitudinal ribs for engaging the body of the pulley. Further and other advantages will be better apparent from a detailed description of the invention in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal middle section of the pulley; Figure 2 is an end elevation of the pulley; and Figure 3 is an isometric view of the pulley hub.
Referring to the drawings, B represents the body of the pulley which is built up of laminations or sheets of paper. straw board or other suitable material, said sheets being compacted into a single mass by means of 1, 1 represent end plates or rings secured to the outer faces of the body B of the pulley by means of lag screws 2 which are driven into dowel pins 3, traversing the body of the pulley from one face tothe other at suitable intervals.
The ends of the pulley are counter-sunk at a, a which leaves a web 4: at the center of the pulley. What has been thus far described is old in the art, and I do not make any claim therefor, my invention being directed to the hub construction which is as follows:
5 represents the hub of the pulley, preferably a casting, said hub being provided with a flange 6 at one end and double V-shaped ribs 7 extending longitudinally along the surface of the hub and arranged at suitable Specification of Letters Patent.

intervals around the hub. It will be observed by referring to Figures 2 and 3 that th components 7), Z) of the double \l-shaped ribs are themselves V-Shaped, meeting on the surface of the hub, from which point they diverge so as to form an obtuse angle, the
purpose of which will presently appear. An opening of suitable size is provided along the axis of the body of the pulley, into which the hub ofis driven until the flange 6 bears against the web 4. Obviously if no means were provided for locking the hub to the body of the pulley, said hub would soon wear loose under the working conditions imposed on the pulley, the pulley then turning idly on the hub. In order to prevent any relative movement between the body of the pulley and the hub, the double V-shaped ribs 7 are provided, which, when the hub is driven into the body 13, the V-shaped components I), I) will force a passage through the body material, thus effectively locking or keying the hub to the pulley body. It is very desirable that the locking means on the hub be shaped as here provided. because the double shaped ribs in addition to providing a twofold key, also provide a key-way between them, wherein is wedged a tongue of material by which arrangement it is practically impossible for the ribs to work loose under the starting and stopping stresses imposed on the pulley. The components 7), 7) of the double rib 7 taper toward the end of the hub opposite the flange, which end is the first to enter the pulley, thereby permitting the hub to be readily forced in place.
Owing to the fact that the hubs I) are cast, having the shaft openings 8 cored in them, it often happens that due to a slight displacement of the mold the opening 8 is off center, and since it is impossible to true the hub' by turning down its outer surface because of the ribs, 1 provide the flange 6, which, as will be seen from the drawings, projects slightly beyond the outside edges of the ribs, which flange may be turned down, using the opening 8 as a center, the desired amount for truing up the flange. It is thus seen that often though the hub itself is slightly off center with relation to its opening 8, the flange 6 may be turned true, and when the hub is driven into the body of the pulley, and the outer surface of the pulley then trued up with relation to the opening 8 of the hub, the pulley will not only be true, but will have every appearance of being true, which is not always the case under the present types of pulleys.
Obviously modifications may be made in various parts, such as changing the shape or method of arrangement of the ribs 6 with- V out departing from the spirit of the inven- A pulley provided with a body portion and a hub, said hub being provided with a series of longitudinally disposed ribs arranged in pairs, the ribs of each pair having a common base in the hub and diverging therefrom.
4. A. pulley composed of sheets of fibrous material, said pulley being provided with a hub, having a seriesof longitudinally disposed V-shaped ribs on the periphery thereof and an annular flange on one end of said hub, the periphery of said flange extending slightly beyond the outermost points of the ribs. 7
5. As a new article of manufacture, a pulley composed of laminations of fibrous material, a series of dowel pins traversing said laminations, end plates on the opposite sides of said pulley, said end plates being secured by means of lag screws seated in the ends of the dowel pins and a hub traversing the aforesaid laminations, said hub being pro-j vided with'a flange at one end and double V-shaped tapering ribs on the periphery of a the hub.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
