Description

0 CUMMINGS. ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE CHAINS. APPLICATION FILED NOV-21, 1921- affo vmm s Patented Mar. '21, 1922.
or play.
PATENT OFFICE.
CARL M. CUMMINGS, OF DILLON, COLORADO.
ATTACHFIENT FOR AUTOMOBILE CHAI NS.
Application filed November 2 T 0 all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL M. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dillon, in the county of Summit and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Automobile Chains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an attachment for automobile chains, and more particularly to a fastening device for connecting the ends of anti-skid chains. I
The object of the invention is the construction of a simple and efficient fastening device whereby the ends of an anti-skid chain can be quickly fastened together.
WVith this and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim,
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fastening device.
Figure 2 is a. view in side elevation of the fastening device.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the fastening device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken on line 4-4, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is 'a sectional view, taken on line 5-5, Fig, 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal, sectional view of another embodiment of the fastening device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a casing that comprises a bottom 2 and parallel sides 3-3. The bottom 2 is cut away, at 1, leaving an opening in the bottom in which the flat spring 5 may move This spring 5 is coiled, at its inner ends, around pin 6, and its outer end is left free to move in a vertical plane between the sides 3 and in the opening formed by cutting away the bottom 2, at 1. A lock lever 7 is provided with a straight, inner end 8 adapted to bear flat against spring 5 when lever 7 is in a closed position, as shown Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lug 21, 1922.
1, 1921. Serial No. 516,764.
in Figs, 1 and 2; look lever 7 is rotatably mounted upon rivet or pin 9. The lever 7 is outwardly-bowed, at 10, this bowed portion 1O registering with the notched portion 11 of the sides 3, into which notch 11 and bowed portion 10, and link 12 on one end of an anti-skid chain may be positioned (Figs. 1 and 2). Another notched portion 11 is formed upon sides 3 so as to allow the operator to more readily grasp the grip end 13 of lock lever 7.
A bolt 14 is positioned in one end of the sldes 3, and on the ends of the bolt 14, and
against the outer faces of the sides 3 is fastened a link 15; link 15 being connected to one end of an anti-skid chain.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the spring 5 is formed integral with the bottom 2, but in other respects the fastening device is the sam as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5.
My device is simple to operate since all that is necessary is to connect the same by means of bolt 14 to one of the end links of the chain, and then connect th other end of the chain, to the device, by placing link 12 over the lock lever and then forcing the link into the notch 11 of the sides 3 and at the same tim close the lock lever 7 down between the sides 3, the lock lever being held in position by reason of the spring 5 engaging the fiat end 8 of the lock lever.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawlngs, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore,
reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope sides near one end of the casing, a lock lever' rotatably mounted 'on said last-mentioned pin, said lock lever provided with a fiat or straight inner end adapted to bear against said flat spring, said lock lever provided with an outwardly-bowedportion and with a grip at its outer end, saidsides of the casing provided With a plurality of notches one of said notches registerin with the bowed portion of the lock lever w en the lock lever is closed upon the casing, said grip of the lock lever registering with the other notch of the easing,
and detachable means on one end of the 10 easing'for fastening a link to the casing.
In testimon signature.
y whereof I hereunto afiix my CARL M. CUMMINGS.
