Be it known that 1, James G. Born, acitizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Square Hampers, of which the following is a specification.

On account of the high cost of labor it is necessary to reduce, as far as possible, the cost of manufacture of hampers which I use for shipping fruits, vegetables and the like, but at the same time it is necessary to preserve the strength of the hampers to resist the rough usage to which they are subjected in transportation in order that the contents of the hamper may not be injured.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, substantial and cheap type of top for square hampers, which will rigidity the hamper at the top, thereby sustaining the hamper against crushing when packed for transportation in a car or on a truck or wagon.

A further object of my invention is to is an enlarged detail top plan provide a simple but efiicient fastening to secure the top firmly to the hamper:

And with these and further objects in view my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The reference numeral 1 designates a hamper of approved construction, thevertical slats 2 of which are provided with wire hoops 3 which hoops are secured by means of the staples 4, the top portions of the slats being suitably nailed, or otherwise secured, to the cleats 5, which cleats project into the hamper from the sides.

Around the top and at the outside of the hamper are secured strips 6, which have be tween the adjacent ends thereof on each side of the hamper, a space 7. A wire hoop 8 is secured around the outer face of the top of the hamper by means of staples 9, said i Specification of Letters Patent.

My improved top consists of one or more pieces of veneer, preferably two pieces 10 and 11, which veneers are secured together by means of stitching, nailing, or by staples, so as to make a comparatively thick rigid cover. ecured at diametrically opposite sides of the under face of the cover are two cleats 12, which cleats are spaced from the extreme outer adjacent edges of the cover as more clearly shown in Figure 4, so that these cleats will fit inside of the hamper next to the hamper top cleats 5 so as to form a brace to the top of the hamper, thereby mak ing the top of the hamper stronger and reducing the chances of the top of the hamper collapsing or breaking incident to rough usage in transportation.

In order to quickly and securely fasten the top of the hamper to the hamper I secure wires 13 and 14 to the top hoop 8 of the hamper, one end of the wire fasteners 13 and 14 being firmly secured more or less permanently to the hoop 8, as clearly shown in Figure 2, while the body of the wire -1s passed over the top of the hamper and its free end secured temporarily, but securely to the hoop S at the diametrically opposite side of the hamper, as clearly shown at the left hand side of Figure 2.

The wire 14 is similarly secured at one end to the hoop 8 and passed across the top of the hamper, crossing the wire 13, and its free end secured similarly to the diametrically opposite side of the hamper, both connections of the wires 13 and 14 to the hoop 8 being within the space 7 between the adjacent ends of the strips 6, as clearly shown in the drawing.

Certain details of construction shown in the drawings may be changed without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims. 1

What I claim is:

1. The combination with a hamper having cleats secured to the vertical sides inside thereof and at the top of the hamper, strips secured to the outer face of the hamper in line with said cleats, adjacent ends of said strips being spaced from each other, a wire hoop secured around the top of the hamper over said strips, fastening means for the top for said hamper; said fastening means comprising two strands of wire, one end of each the hamper.
