`IMPROVEMENT IN FARE-BOXES.

To all whom it may concer/n:

Be it known that I, JAMns F. WINCHELL, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Fare-Boxes, of which the following is a specification:

The subject-matter of this invention is a safety drawer or receptacle for fare-boxes, for collecting fares in street-cars; and it is primarily intended for The Champion Fare-Box.7 In stripping the box the drawer, previously closed and locked, is detached by the driver and delivered in the oftice, where it is unlocked and opened by the proper officer. The invention consists, iirst, in a drawer or farereceptacle so constructed that it automatically locks or fastens itself in the fare-box when properly introduced, and which is released by sliding a lid over the opening in the top of the drawer, to close the same, the lid being locked in its closed position before it releases the drawer; second, in the construction of the locks above referred to; third, in' certain means for holding the lid securely in open position and for preventing the operation of the same to release the drawer, except by the ing lid during the act of' unlocking the drawerfrom the case; fifth, in certain means to prevent the withdrawal of the drawer in open condition in case the same should willfully or accidentally be -only partially inserted, so as not to be locked by the main catch.

Figure l represents a horizontal section of the base of .a fare-box illustrating the invention. The plane 'of the section is represented by the lines a a, Figs. 2 and 3. In carrying out this invention, a case, A, is

employed, of any suitable preferred shape,

furnishing a recess with parallel sides to receive a drawer, B, and an aperture, Z, to admit the fares. This is attached beneath the body of a fare-box, in lieu of other nal receptacle. The fare-box is preferably the one known as The Champion Fare-Box.77 For securing the drawer in the case a stud-catch, g/,with abeveled end and one or more circumferential grooves or notches are attached to the back of the case,.and a lever-bolt, l, projected by spring 2, is arranged in a lock, w, at the inner end of the drawer, to automatically engage with the same.

For closing and releasing thc drawer `when it is to be detached to strip the box, the drawer is furnished with a sliding lid, w, adapted to cover its orifice z', and constructed with an inclined slot, 3, or its equivalent, to engage with the projecting end of the lever-bolt l of the lock to retract the same, and with one or more beveled studs, 4, to automatically engage with the spring-bolt 5 of a tumbler-lock, v, which secures the lid in its closed position. Ihc drawer is thus closed and locked in the act of detaching it, the drawer-retaining lock c being accessible only by means of the selflocking lid, except by drilling through the case, which may readily beprevented, and if accomplished, could not'be concealed. The drawer-lid w is preferably furnished with a plurality of catches, 4, in order to insure the locking of the same before the actuation of the drawer-retaining lock w, and, subsequently, in its most projected position. Tosecure the drawer-lid in its open position, and to prevent the operation of the same to release the drawer except by the proper key, the permanent top u ofthe drawer is furnished with one or more vertical spring-bolts, 6; and the sliding lid w is furnished with a corresponding perforated catch-plate, 7, with inclined face to depress the bolts, and a gage-stop, 8, to facilitate the application of the 'proper key t, Fig. 7. This key is constructed with a gagenotch, 9, in its end, to engage with the abutment 8, and with pins 10 in its under side, corresponding with the bolts 6, by which to depress the same, so as to release the lid and to engage with the catch 7. The said vkey is v lifted out of mesh with the catch 7 until the locking, releasing, and withdrawing operations are entirely completed.

The locking and detaching key t may be carried by the driver, who, at the end of the trip, is thus enabled to strip the box and deliver the contents secured in the locked drawer to the proper ofcer, who, by means of the key of the lid-lock e, opens the drawer and empties the same. The drawer is then returned to the box in open condition.

With the securities above described there would be a possibility of a partial insertion of the drawer, so that it should not engage with the retaining-catch y, and, consequently, the open drawer might be subsequently withdrawn and its contents abstracted. This failure to secure the drawer might be accidental. To provide for this and prevent the withdrawal of the drawer from any point without iirst sliding back and looking the lid, as in detaching the drawer from the main catch, a spring bolt or catch, 14, is applied to one or each side of the drawer, (or in its bottom or top, or both,) and a corresponding ratchetrack, 15, or one or more notches, is arranged in the case for the same to engage with. This bolt, in the illustration, is pivoted within the retaining-lock a' and operated through the medium of the lever-bolt 1.

The drawer is preferably lnade of metal. The case may be either wooden or metallic.

The details of construction do not require any particular description, and are variable.

r[he following is claimed as new:

1. A drawer for fare-boxes, having an automatic lock, x, at its inner end for securing the same in its case, and a sliding lid, w, for closing the opening in the top of the drawer, and constituting the means or medium for operating the drawer-retaining lock x to release the drawer, and a lid-lock, e, for securing the lid prior. to the release of the drawer, so that the drawer is necessarily closed and locked in the act of releasing it, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination of the stud-catch y with one or more circumferential grooves or notches and the lever-bolt 1 with its spring 2, con structed and arranged substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.

4. The spring-bolts 6 (one or mor and catch 7, arranged and operating substantially as described, in combination with the drawerlid fw, for securing the lid in open position and preventing its operation, except by the proper key t, as set forth.

5. The spring bolt or catch 14 and ratchetrack 15, or one or more notches, arranged substantially as described, in combination with a fare-drawer, with sliding lid closed and locked, in the act of operating such bolt or catch, for the purpose set forth.

6. A fare-box provided with a drawer, when said drawer fastens itself in the box in such a manner as to be released only by the movement of a sliding lid, substantially as herein described. l

7. A fare-box provided with a drawer which locks itselfl in the case by means of sliding it in place, and a sliding lid, substantially as herein described, when said lid is moved back over the opening ot' the drawer and locked, and the drawer unlocked from the case by the movements of said sliding top effected by the action of one key.

8. In combination with a fare-box drawer having a sliding lid for closing and subsequently detaching the same, a key, t, constructed substantially as herein described, for releasing and sliding the drawer-lid and withdrawing the closed receptacle.
