NIA.
I REMOVAB E TYPE FACE."
' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 14, 192 2 Application filed. February 7, 1920. Serial IiTo. 356,893. a
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARROLL E. FIsK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made a new and useful invention-to wit, Improvement in Removable Type Faces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, con cise, and exact description of, the same, 1
This invent-ion relates to the printing art of the character where type is employed for making the impression, in contradistinction to that character of printing known as linotype where the impression is made from a casting of type previously set up in a form.
It is an object of my invention to simplify the printing operation where it is necessary to change type in a set up where the type is locked in the printing frame or chase;
Another object of my invention is to facilitate the printing of tickets where the date thereon must be changed for each day.
Another object of my invention is to produce a type which may be readily changed if an error is made in setting up the same, or if the type should be mutilated in any waiy during the printing.
t will be hereinafter seen that if a change is necessary, same may be made without seriously delaying the printing operation.
In this specification 'and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claim following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a single type block with a removable type plate mounted thereon. V
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a type block with my removable type plate partly removed laterally.
Fig.3 is a side elevation showing the preferred way in which the type may be removed. I
The numeral 5 designates a metal block such as is used to form the base or body upon which type the face is removably capable of receiving the type plate.
mounted. This block. forms a means for holding the type within the form commonly 2, to form a flat table upon which the type plate rests.
At one edge, I provide the upstanding dovetail 7 having an inwardly inclined face 8 adapted to co-act with the inclined end 9 of the type plate. Opposite this dovetail 7,
I have formed a recessed portion 10 within which I attach a spring 11 having a curved of the table 6 opposed to the 'dovetail7;
upperend 12, which stands above the plane The opposite end of the spring being secured to the block 5 within the recessed portion .10 and the said spring is also provided with cutaway portions in the ,edges thereofto afford finger grips. when moving it. The
spring 11, to keep the said type block in inti mate contact with the inclined face '8 and with the table 6. p
The operation of my device is as follows: Supposing that a job has been set up a-ndfis runnmg, and changes are required the change may be made by lifting thetype plate 14 from the table 6 by grasping the end 9 and forcing in the direction of the spring 11. This will free the end 9 from the inclined surface 8 and the type plate 14 removed. Thus, the change :is made instantly and without disturbing the type form or make-ready onpress, accomplishing a very great saving in time. By actual test such a change can be made in thirty seconds, as compared: to twenty minutes by the old method. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A type block, such as described, having a dovetailed edge extending above the upper face thereof; a groove formed in the opposite face of said. block; a fiat spring member mounted in said groove, below the plane of the side of the said block, and having the upper end thereof bent inwardly and extending above the top face'of the block and the opposite end secured to the said type block Within the groove, said spring being provided with suitable finger gripping portions in the edges thereof in combination with a removable type plate having bevelled edges adapted to engage said dovetailed edge and i said bent spring. 10
In testimony whereof, Ihave hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 31st day of December, 1919. V
' CARROLL E. FISK.
In presence of LINCOLN V. J oHNsoN.
