Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
.Application led April 19,V 1921. Serial No. 462,494.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HUGH J. ScANLoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of vWaynesburg, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Annealing-Pot Garriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to carriage.
In a joint application filed of even date herewith by myself and Michael B. Kelly, Serial No. 462,525, we have illustrated and described an annealing furnace for annealing wire or like products, and the invention there consisted in a long straight-away annealing chamber with the heating furnace at one side thereof and communicating therewith, the idea being vto introduce the pots at the entrance end'ofthefurnace and move them gradually toward the hottest part of the annealing chamber where the furnace is located and, then continue the movement beyond the said furnace and gradually cooling the pots until the outlet is reached. The annealing carriages are connected up to form a train and are drawn through the annealing chamber by a chain connected to the front carriage, and as the carriages leave the annealing chamber they are disconnected and lifted to one side to remove the pot and the carriage is then taken around to the entrance end of the annealing chamber and there connected up with the last carriage of the train, and in this way a continuous succession of carriages is kept moving through the annealing chamber. Y
an annealing pot The object of my invention is to providev a carriage for such annealing operation which will support` the annealing pot securely in position during this passage through the annealing chamber, and of such construction that it will stand up against the severe heat to which such carriages are subjected in their passages through the annealing chamber, and at the same time provide' convenient means for connecting and disconnecting the carriages as they enter and leave the annealing chamber.
To these ends my invention comprises the knovel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawing Fig. l is a side elevation partly in section of a portion of the train oo mposed of my improved carriages; Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section; and Fig. 3 1s a cross section of the annealing chamber showing my carriage therein.
In the drawing the numeral 2 the concrete foundation for the furnace upon which the floor 3 is laid, said floor inclining slightly from the entrance to the vdischarge end of the annealing chamber for facilitating the passage of the pots through the furnace, all as set forth and described in said prior application.
Located within the annealing chamber `are the longitudinally extending troughs 4 containing the balls 5. The carriages, during their passage through the annealing chamber, are adapted to rest on said balls and mOVe thereon, and I will nowdescribesaid carriages in detail.
ach carriage comprises a platform 6 with the ribs 7 formed thereon which form a rest or support for the annealing pot 8, which may he of any suitable construction. These ribs allow for the circulation of the heat beneath the pot and give a more uniform quality of material.
The lower face of thc platform is provided with the grooves 9 which register with the troughs 8 containing the balls 5. These grooves extend the entire length of the platform and are brought adjacent to the platformof the next carriage, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, so that the balls are confined for the entire length of the platform and there is no opportunity for their escaping andfalling on to the floor of the annealing oven and causing an uneven movement of the carriages.
The platform 6 has the enlargements l() at the sides thereof with the upwardly projecting side lugs ll whichact as retainers for the pot 8 and prevent its shifting laterally.` These enlargements acl; as feet upon which the carriage may rest when disconnected and deposited on the floor at'one side of the furnace for the removal of the pot therefrom. These furthermore provide means for grasping the carriage for lifting it by means of a crane when it is removed from the track, or when it is to be applied in position on the track to enter the annealdesignates anneahn g ing chamber.
To prevent the undue longitudinal shiltingv of the pot the platform 6 is provided at one end With the upwardly projecting lug 12 and at the opposite end with the hood 13. The lugliiorms a hoolriior. connecting up With the drawing chain 14, and when the carriages are connected together the hook portion 12 extends within the hood 13, as
4indicated indotted lines, Fig. 1, anda coupling pin 15 passes through the olevis ,lug 16 and the lower portion 17v of the lug 12.
In making up the train at the entrance end of the annealing chamber, the chain 1l is connected up to the hook 12 ot' the first carriage, and a second carriage is then brought into position with its hook port-ion the carriage and the pot from the track to the floor, the enlargements 10for1ning the feet on which the carriage rests. In this position the annealing pot is removed and the carriage is then picked up and moved to the ent-rance end of the furnace, where it is/connected up to the train'in the manner lafore'deslcrilied, and the pot isinserted and it proceeds through the entrance in the usual way.
rl`he ribs 7 add strength tothe carriage and at'the same time permit the airfto circulate under. the pot, giving' L morefuni'form heating, and the pot, When once centered, is held from shifting by the retaining lugs 11 atthe sides and the hook 1Q and hood 13 at the ends.
Vhat I claim is: Y
1. AA carriage `for annealing pots comprising a platform having enlargements at the sidesthereof forming feet. forsame, and Vupwardly extending lugs on said enlargements to prevent the lateral shifting of the not. v l 2. A carriage lor annealing pots comprising aplatform, a hook Vportion at one end .of said platform, a hood at the opposite end of said platform withA openings formed therein for the insertion of a coupling pin. In testimony whereof, .Lthe said HUGH J. SoANLoN, have hereunto set my hand.
