GATE.
Application filed July 10,
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I,"ALBERT B. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of 'Bedford and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is aspecification.
Thiskinventi'on relates particularly to operating inean'sfor road gates designed to be operated by a driver or equestrian to open the gate, and'then to close the same after having passed through the gate opening.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simplefmeans actuated by a lever for swinging a gate to an open position after unlatching the gate, to'cause the gate to be latched against a latch post arranged right angularly with respect thereto Without projections in the driveway, and after the operator has passed through the gateway to actuate another lever which will cause the imlatching of the gate from the latch post, the swinging of the gate to its closed position and the latching of the gate in such position.
A further object of the invention is to produce a gate operating means which shall be of an extremely simple construction requiring only a minimum amount of physical exertion upon the part of the operator and which shall perform the functions for which it is devised with efficiency and with certainty.
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 1mprovement, the gate being in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the device as illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view.
gate arranged transversely of a roadway is indicated by the numeral 10. This gate is hinged to a post 11. The abut-ment post for the gate is indicated by the numeral 12-. A plate 15 is secured to one side of the post 12 and is provided with an opening. A V-shaped slot communicates with the opening and extends to the outer end of the plate.
A latch post is arranged along one side of the road in a line with the hinge post and is indicated by the numeral 14. This latch approximately Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1922. 1920. Serial No. 395,201.
post carries a latch keeper 15 which is similar in construction to the keeper 13.
On the outer vertical stile of the gate 10 is a swinging latch 16 comprising a weighted arm havingan off set portion terminating in an eye. A plate is secured to the stile of the gate and is bent upon itself to provide a loop forming a bearing for the off set portion of the weighted arm. This latch is operated byan element 17 in a manner which will presently be described, so that when the gate is in closed position the latch will engage in; the keeper 13 of the abutment post 12 and when in open position will engage in the keeper 15 of the latch post 14.
The top rail of the gate is provided with an extension 17 at the hinged end thereof. An arm 18 having a depending extremity 18 secured to the extension 17 is provided with a headed upstanding extremity 19 extending through an opening 19 in a plate 19 which is secured to the end of the extension 17 and forms a bearing from a rocker plate 20 which is pivoted upon the upstanding extremity 19. The latch operating element 17 is connected to one end of the rocker plate 20.
On one side of the roadway, at a suitable distance from the hinge post and from the latch post are lever posts 21 and 22. To these posts there are centrally pivoted levers 23 and 24 respectively. Each of the levers may be provided with a depending operat- 1Il%)handle 25.
n the rocker plate 20 at the end thereof opposite that to which the latch operating element 17 is connected, there is a headed stud 26. This stud is engaged by eyes 27 on the ends of members 28 and 29 respectively which are pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the respective levers 23 and 24. The members 28 and 29 may be in the nature of rods or flexible elements, but for.
connected to the opsical exertion.
the rocker plate and in so doing exert a pull upon the element or member 17 to swing the latch to bring the same out of the latch keeper in, say the abutment post 12. A further movement of either of the levers 28 or 24 will exert a pull on the element or rod 32 which further influences the rods 28 and 29 to swing the gate to an open position. The connection between the element or member 17 the rocker plate and the swinging latch is sufiiciently loose to permit of. the latch dropping into engagement with the latch keeper 15 on the latch post 14 to hold the gate in open position. The gate is swung to closed position by operating the parts in a similar manner to that just described.
lVith my construction the connection between the rocker plate and latch renders the latch free to be acted upon by the latch keepers in either the latch or abutment posts, and the operation of the device may be accomplished by only a minimum amount of phy- The element 31 is preferably of a flexible nature and serves, only as a stop for the rocker plate, holding the rocker plate in correct position for the proper operation of the latch. The element 81 is arranged to permit of the reversing of the rocker plate to accommodate itself to either right or left hand swinging gates.
"secured to said levers Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is I In a gate operator,a post, a gate hinged to said post and provided with an extension,
an abutment post, a latch keeper secured to tremity extending through said open1ng,a
rocker plate pivotally mounted upon said upstanding extremity above said plate, an operating element loosely connected to said latch and to one end of said rocker plate, posts located on opposite sides of the first mentioned post, levers I one side of said posts,-a means connecting opposite ends ofsaid levers, rods pivotally and connected to the opposite end of said rocker plate, a flexible element secured to one end of said rocker plate and connected to one of said rods, a latch. post disposed between the first men-' tioned post and one of the last mentioned posts and a latch keeper secured to said latch post and adapted to receive said latch when the gate is in open position. 7
In testimon whereofI aflix my signature.
ALBERT B. PARKER.
