H. A. BARRETT.
TANK HEATER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 24, 921.

TANK HEATER.
1,408,681. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 24, 1921.
To all to harm it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM A. BARRETT, citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heatersi'or stockwatering tanks and has special reference to means for effecting circulation of the water in the tank so that the entire body of the water will be maintained at a temperature suitable for use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a perspective view of a heater embodying my improvements with parts broken away.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a casing having a vertically disposed portion 1 and an offset or step 2, as shown. lVithin the vertically disposed. portion 1 is a partition 3 and between the said partition and the wall of the casing remote from the offset or step is a reservoir or fuel tank 4 from which a feed pipe 5 leads to a point within the step where it communicates with branches Gileading to oil burners of any well-known or preferred construction. Chimneys or flues 7 are fitted about the burners so that the heat therefrom will play directly upon the top of the ofiiset, as will be readily understood. The partition 3 is provided at its lower end with a slot or notch 8 to accommodate the feed pipe 5 and also to permit the flow of cooler air to the burners so as to support combustion, the heated air escaping through the space or flue defined by the partition and the vertical wall of the casing rising from the offset, as fully set forth in an application executed by me January 29, 1921. A cover 9 is placed upon the top of the vertical portion of the casing and this cover is provided with a horizontal plate 10 extending entirely across the top of the casing and provided with openings 11 therethrough to permit the air to flow into and escape from the easing without creating such a draft as will tend to extinguish the burners. is arched over the plate 10 and its ends may be open although I have shown perforations 12 in its end walls which will admit air in quantities suflicient to support combustion The cover I Patented Mar. 7, 1922. Serial No. 447,421.
but will retard the How to 111g.
Upon the top of the offset or step 2, I place a water back 13 which is preferably a hollow casing of such dimensions that it will cover the entire top of the step and rest against the vertical wall rising from the step. In one end of the water back 13, is shown an elbow 14: from which a nozzle or pipe 15 depends outside the casing to a point where the cooler water at the bottom of the tank will be readily caused to enter the same. In the top of the water back, at the opposite end thereof, is shown an elbow or nozzle 16 which permits the escape of the heated water, but the elbows-or nozzles may be omitted and the inlet and outletconsist of one or more openings through the respectlve walls of the water back.
The heater is to be placed within the tank and rest upon the bottom of the same and the tank and heater should be of such relative proportions that the water level iii the tank will be below the top or cover 9 but the offset and the water back thereon will be entirely submerged. When the fuel is ignited at the burners, the heat therefrom playing upon the top of the offset or step 2 will act directly upon the water back so as to increase the temperature of the same and the water eliminate blowin the water back will, consequently, be
heated and will rise through the nozzle 16 and pass into the body of water within the tank. As the heated water escapes from the water back, additional cooler water will be drawn in through the depending inlet nozzle 15 and a circulation within the tank and through the. water back will be thus set up so that the entire body of water will be kept at the proper temperature for use. The water back should be relatively shallow so that the water therein will be thoroughly and quickly heated and thorough circulation thereof set up in the tank and through the water back. The heating of the water will be accelerated, moreover, by its contact with the sides of the casing which will be raised in temperature by the action of the burners which obviously will throw off heat against the sides of the casing as well as against the top of the same and economical use of the fuel is thus effected. The water back is preferably Welded to the top plate of the offset of the casing so that it is not apt to be dislodged, but it may be reinovahly supported on the offset to facilitate renewal or repairs.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
The combination with a tanlcheater casing having a stepped formation, of a Water hack resting on and (Jo-extensive with the top 10 of the step of the casing and provided at one end with :1 depending inlet nozzle exterior to the casing and provided at its opposite end with all outlet nozzle rising from its top, and a burner Within the step of the 15 casing.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
