Description
H. EDRINGTON; PORTABLE FURNACE-L APPLICATION FILED IAN-28, I921.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
HIRA'M EDRINGTON, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PORTABLE FURNACE.
Application filed January 28, 1,921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM EDRINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
The furnace which is the subject matter of the present application for patent has been designed for preparing the soil for tobacco beds by heating the same and thus destroying the seeds and weeds.
The invention has for its object to provide a very simple and etficient furnace of the kind stated, and also one which can be used for other purposes, such as heating water, etc.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, but it will. be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the apparatus and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof showing its use as a water heater.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fire box or combustion chamber having a fiat bottom so that it may rest on the ground and heat the same by direct contact therewith. The rear end of the fire box has a door 6 for the admission of fuel and the removal of ashes, and from the top of the fire box, at its forward end. rises a stack 7 for the escape of smoke from the fire box.
Back of the stack 7 the top of the fire box 5 is open, but this open top of the fire box is adapted to be closed by a flat lid 8 when the furnace is in use.
The fire box 5 is provided with runners 9 to facilitate transportation. These runners are substantially semicircular, and they are rotatably mounted, as shown at 10 on the side walls of the fire box such a distance Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1922. Serial No. 440,562.
from the bottom thereof that they may be turned up as shown in Fig. 1 clear of the ground to allow the fire box to seat directly on the ground. When the apparatus is'to be transported, the runners will be rotated from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that they now engage the ground and hold the fire box spaced therefrom at the bottom. In order to retain the runners in the last-described position they are provided at the top with forward projections 11 seating on stop pins 12 carried by the fire box sides, these parts preventing the runners from swinging back to lower the fire box when it is drawn forwardly.
The apparatus can also be used for heating Water for scalding hogs and other purposes, by removing the lid 8 and substituting therefor the pan 13 shown in Fig. 2, said pan being dimensioned to seat snugly in the top opening of the fire box 5.
When the apparatus is used for heating the ground, the fire box 5 is let down to rest on the ground as shown in Fig. l and allowed to remain in this position until the soil under it has been heated sufficiently to destroy all seeds and weeds. Some of the soil alongside the apparatus can also be thrown on the lid 8 and thus heated. After the soil has been treated at this point, the apparatus is moved ahead a distance equal to its length and the next batch of soil is treated, and so on to the end of the row, after which the operation is repeated on the next row.
The apparatus is very simple and easy to handle, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it has been designed.
I claim:
Aportable furnace comprising a fire box having a flat bottom, runners for supporting the fire box clear of the ground, said runners being rotatably mounted on the sides of the fire box and adjustable to supporting position and also to lie above the plane of the fire box bottom to permit the latter to seat on the ground, stops on the sides of the fire box engageable by the runners when in supporting position to prevent rearward swing thereof and lowering of the fire box to the ground.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HIRAM EDRINGTON.
