Description

F. LUSZCZYSZYN-e FREIGHT CAR'BODY.
APPLICATION man Aue.11,1921.
1,408,214. Patented Feb. 2s, 1922.
I Tui- ,6 T 1mi, F/\In e.'
UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK LUSZCZYSKZYN, OF LVUDINGTON, MICHIGAN.
FREIGHT-CAR, BODY.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK LUsZozYsZYN, citizen of United States, residing at Lud ington, in the county ot Mason and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FreighteCar Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide a gondola railway car with effective means for being manually unloaded.
Another object is the means provided by which one or both sides ot the car may be raised and disposed in a manner permitting free access by the unloaders.
A third object is the provision of means for controlling the car sides and allowing the cargo to be removed direct from the car floor instead of being shoveled over the car sides, a method usually employed.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement ot parts described in the specifications and shown by the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of car showingthe sides chain supported.
igure 2 is a side elevational view or the same.
Figure 3 is an end view showing by broken lines the sides in open or unloading position.
Referring to the figures in detail the numeral 10 designates in general, car wheels, axles, and trucks ot usual design upon which is mounted a car body comprising a floor 11 and ends 12 rigidly attached thereto. Sides 14: and 15 are provided with a plurality of strengthening ribs 16.
The sides are positioned between the ends of the car body and may be folded inwardly and downwardly, raised vertically and carried transversly to a point relatively central of the car, these movements being controlled. by the projecting` ends of the pins or pivot elements 18 secured to the lower end portions of the sides.
The projecting ends pass longitudinally through an opening 19 formed by a retaining iide bar 20 angularly formed in spaced con ormity with the outline of the car ends. The ends of the guide bars 20 are provided with offset elements 21 adapted to be secured to the lower portion of the car ends 12, the

offsets 21 acting as distance pieces .holding the bar 2O away from the car end an amount su'liicient to form a slot or opening 19 in which the pivot pins 1S are tree to. move;
The offset 21 provides a stop on which the pivot pin rests when the car sides are in normal vertical position. A spacing block 22, positioned centrally of the top edge of the car end, is secured by bolts 23 passing through the guide bar 2O and engaging the car ends, the same functioning` as a stop for the transverse movement ot the sides when in open or elevated position as shown in Figure 3.
By reference to Figure 1 it will be seen that provision against outward displacement of the sides is attained by means or' chains 24 and 25 secured to the upper inside portion of thecar sides, these chain elements 24 and 25 are adjustably connected one to the other by a lever hook 26 held in closed position by cross link 27.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the perfect form ot its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without departingv from the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f 1. A car body Structure comprising a floor, and walls rigidly engaged with said iioor, guide bars spacedly engaged over the ends and tops of the said end walls, a pair of side walls disposed between end walls, and pins fixed in said side walls operatively en gaging between said end walls and said bars permittingraising said side walls.
2. A car body structure comprising a floor, end elements fixed to extend vertically thereabove, side elements extending longitudinally between said end elements, pins fixed on the lower corners of said side elements. guide bars rigid with said end elements and spaced therefrom, slots in which said pins may operate, and stops central upon the upper edge of said end elements limiting the movement of said side elements.
3. A car body structure comprising a. `floor having rigid raised end plates, bars enframing said plates at theii' tops and ends, pins being operable in 4the mentioned spaces said bars framing guide Ways7 side plates whereby the side platescan be raised and normally resting on said floorloetween said moved over a portion of the topliof the cai', 10 end plates, blocks interposed in the space and means for maintaining said side plates between said bars and Vsaidiend plates at the in normal loperative position.
center along their upper edge, pins fixed on ln Witness whereof I aiX my si nature.
the lower corners of said side plates, said FRANK LUSZZY ZYN.
