Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed March 10, 1917. Serial No. 153,867.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. In, 1318.)
T0 aZZ w 710m it may concern c Be it known that I, ALCANZO D. Nnw- COMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liteboats,
' of which the following is a specification.
'by the boat can be released from thelashings holding it upon the deck from below the deck.
Another object of my invention is to provide a boat of this character having cars which may be inserted or removed from below the deck and which can also be operated from below the deck and also providing means for raisingor removing persons from the open water.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective arrangement of parts, having certain combinations hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings-.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved life boat;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents my improved life boat which is preferably made of steel and completely covered by the deck 2, which makes a watertight boat, all of which is readily understood. The deck 2 is provided with a series of hatch openings having raised coamings 3 surround+ ing the same and upon which rests the hatches 4, there being any desired numbers of hatch openings and a hatch for each opening. The hatches 1 have at one side the outwardly extending ears 5 pivoted to the ears 6 carried by the upper face of the deck 2 and whereby the hatches may be swung upwardly for opening the same. The hatches are held in their closed position on the 00aming by means of the pivoted latches operated from above the deck whereby they are held tightly down to form a tight joint to prevent water from entering the hatch openings.
I have shown three of these hatches 5, but it will be understood that any desired number may be used without departing from my invention.
The side of the boat is provided with an inwardly extending or bent portion 7 arranged on each side and in which are ,arranged the air intake openings 8 communieating with the interior of the boat and arranged in said openings are valves 9 which are normallyheld open. so that air can pass into theboat and are closed by water pressure from the outside of the boat. By this arrangement of the valves, it will be seen that, when the boat is on thesurface of the water, it is supplied with the necessary air,
but when it is submerged or the waves wash over theboat, the water pressure will automatically close the valves. The side of the boat, below the air ports or openings 8, is provided with openings in which are arranged the oar locks 10 which allow the oars 'tolbe inserted therethrough from within the boat and having means for preventing water passing into the boat around the cars. The oar .lock openings, when the cars are not in use, are closed by removable stoppers, so that water can not enter through said openngs. Y V
The forward and rear ends of the boat are provided with pivoted davit engagingmembers 11 and 12 having pivoted releasing levers 13 and 14: to which are connected the links 15 and 16. The links 15 and 16 are connected by additional links 17 and 18 to the free ends of the intermediately pivoted lever 19. This lever, as shown, is pivoted at 20, to the upper faceof the deck and is provided with holding means 21, whereby the lever is held so that the davit engaging members are closed for holding the boat on the davits. By moving the lever 19 on its pivot, it will be seen that the pivoted releas ing levers 13 and 14 will be moved, so that the davit hooks are released and the boat free to clear the vessel.
The forward and rear ends of the boat in beyond the davit engaging members 11 and 12 are provided with the transverse lashing engaging members 22 and 23, which have connected thereto the pivoted releasing levers 24 and 25 which extend transversely of the boat and have connected thereto the links 26 and 2? which are connected to the tree ends of the lever 28. The lever 28 is pivoted on the pivot 20 ot' the lever 19 be low the deck, whereby theboat may e leased from its lashings from below the deck. This allows passengers to enter the life boat and close it up tightly and release it from its lashings after the vesselhas or is sinking in the event that it is impossible to launch the boat by means of the davits.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is: i
l. The combination with a life boathaving a deck completely covering the same, hatches on said deck, air intake valves in the side of the boat and automatically closed by water pressure from the Outside, and a lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat.
2. The combination with a life boat having a deck completely covering thesame, hatches covering the hatch openings, air intake valves in the sides of the boat'and automatically closed by water pressure from the outside, a davit releasing mechanism 0pe-rated from above the deck, and a lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat.
3. The combination with a life boat having a deck completely covering the same, air intake valves in the sides of the boat and automatically closed by water pressure from the outside, a davit releasing mechanism opcrated from above the deck, and a lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat. 7
4t. The combination with a life boat having a deck completely covering the same and having hatch openings therein, hatches covering the hatch openings, air intake valves in the sides of the boat and automatically closed by water pressure from the outside, a davit releasing mechanism operated from the deck, a lashing releasing mechanism 0perated from within the boat and ore locks arranged in the sides of the boat below the air intake valves and constructed and arranged to allow the oars to be inserted from within the boat.
5. The combination with a life boat having adeck completely covering the same and having hatch openings, hatches covering the openings, and a lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat.
6. The combination with a life boat having a deck completely covering the same and having hatch openings hatches covering the hatch openings, 1 lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat, and a davit releasingmechanism operated from above the deck. r it I 7. The combination with a life boat having a deck completely covering the same and having hatch openings therein, pivoted hatches closing said hatch openings, air intake valves inthe sides of the boat and automatically closed by water pressure from the outside, a davit releasing mechanism 0perated fromaloove the deck, a lashing releasing mechanism operated from within the boat, and oar, locks arranged in the sides of the boat below the air intake valves and constructed and arranged to allow the oars to be inserted from within the boat and to form a water tight joint and having means for closing the same when the oars are not in use. a
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
