JOSEPH ALFRED EVERELL, OF QUEBEC, AND ERNEST PLAMON'DON AND UBALD PLO'URDE, OF STE. ANNE DE BEAUI'RE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
STREET INDICATOR.
Application filed April 1,
Be it known that we, JOSEPH ALFRED EVERELL, ERNEST PLAMONDON, and UBALD PLQURDE, British subjects, residin at Quebec, Ste. Anne de Beaupr, and te. Anne de Beaupr, respectively, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street Indicators; and we do hereby de-' the character, of cheap and particularly simple construction.
To better understand the invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawing and following description.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of a car provided with the apparatus.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the casing containing the street display roll. v
Figure 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the operators table bearing the names of the streets or stations and operating mechanism, the operating rod being broken away.
Figure 4 is a bottom view of Figure 3, the bottom plate having been removed to disclose the gear arrangement.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a casing preferably of rectangular shape in which is provided, on one side, a central elongated opening 2, and 3 are drums mount-- ed on the shafts 4 journaled one above the other, in the brackets 5 secured in said casing. Over said drums is rolled the display sheet 6 which carries the names of the streets or stations of the circuit.
On the shafts 4 are mounted the gears 7,
and 8 is an intermediate gear co-acting with Specification of Letters Patent.

said gears 7, mounted on the stub shaft'9 illgh is also journalled in one of said bracke One of said shafts 4 is provided with a bevelled gear 10 which co-acts with the bevellel gear 11 mounted on the horizontal shaft 12 journaled at one end in the bracket 13. The shaft 12 is at right angle in relation to the shafts 4 and pro ects outwardly of said casing 1. The outward projecting end of said shaft 12 is journalled in the open casing or bracket 14 which is preferably secured in the fore end of the car. A bevelled gear 15 is mounted on the end of the shaft 12 which co-acts with the bevellel gear 16 mounted on the vertical shaft 17. The upper end of said vertical shaft is journalled in the bracket 14, while the lower end is threaded at 18 and journalled in the bracket 19.
On one end of one of said shafts 4 is mounted a notched cam 20, and 21 .is a spring held pin which operates in a bracket 22 lolated directly over said cam and rigidly secured to one of the brackets 5. On each revolution of the cam 20 the pin engages the notch therein, thus equalizing the revolutions of said drums, to prevent the display sheet 6 from being over rolled.
The bracket 19 is preferably secured adj acent the motor of the car or in a convenient place at hand for the operator. The shaft 17 projects loosely through the upper lug 23 of the bracket 19, and is journalled in the lower lug 24. On the threaded portion 18 of said shaft 17 is movably mounted the indicating member 25, and 26' is a table of the names of the streets or stations in consecutive order. said shaft 17 is mounted a pinion 27 which co-acts with the gear 28, said gear being mounted on the stub shaft 29 suitably journalled in a frame 30 secured to said bracket 19. A ratchet 31 is mounted on said stub shaft'29 from which projects the lever 32. A handle 33 is provided on said lever to operate the pawls (which are not disclosed in the drawing) in said ratchet to cause a reverse movement when desired.
On the end, of one of the shafts 4 is mounted a cam 34 adapted to'actuate a suitable alarm, which is not disclosed in the To operate the invention, the lever 32 is shifted horizontally, which rotates the stub Adjacent the lower end of' shaft 29, the gear 28, pinion 27, shaft 17, shaft 12, drums 3 and display sheet 6. Simultaneously with the rolling in or out of the display sheet, the pointer 25 is actuated up or down on the threaded portion 18 of the shaft 17. The thread is of such a size that the pointer, on every revolution of the shaft 17, will indicate the name of the station or street on the table 26 which will correspond to the name displayed on the sheet. Thus, a motorman or conductor can readily operate the indicator without in the least ne lecting his other functions.
hat we claim as our invention is 1. Signal mechanism for street indicators, comprising a vertical table marked with the names of the streets or stations arranged in consecutive order, said table having forwardly projecting lugs at top and bottom provided with alining openings; a vertical shaft extending through said openings and journaled in the lower one, the portion of the shaft between said lugs being threaded; a traveling pointer mounted on said threaded portion for cooperation with the names on the table; a frame mounted horizontally at the foot of the pointer shaft; a stub shaft journaled in the frame; a gear connection between the lower ends of the stub shaft and pointer shaft to rotate the latter from the former; and a pawl-andratchet device connected to said stub shaft to operate the same.
2. Signal mechanism for street indicators, comprising a vertical shaft having a threaded portion; a pointer mounted to travel on said portion; a vertical table disposed adjacent the pointer shaft and marked with the names of the streets or stations arranged in consecutive order for cooperation with the pointer; a frame mounted horizontally at the foot of the pointer shaft; a stub shaft journaled in the frame; a gear connection between the lower ends of the stub shaft and pointer shaft to rotate the latter from the former; and a pawl-a'nd-ratchet device connected to said stub shaft to operate the same.
Signed at Quebec, Quebec, Canada, this 7th day of March, 1921.
