T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalid Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to invalid beds, and comprehends a construction to permit use of a bed pan without lifting, rolling or otherwise disturbing the patient.

To this end, the springs and mattress of the bed includes sections slidable transversely of the bedstead, to provide an opening in the bed immediately above the pan support which depends from the side rails of the bedstead.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the bed showing the position of the pan support.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates generally a bedstead of a standard construction, wherein the side rails are indicated at 10. The springs for the bed is indicated generally at B, and made in sec tions, including two end sections 11 which are spaced by intermediate sections 12 and 13 respectively as clearly illustrated in F igure 4-. The mattress is made up of a similar number of sections, including end sections 14:, of an area equal to the end sections 11 of the springs, the end sections 14 being spaced by intermediate sections 15 and 16 respectively, which are also of an area equal to the area of the spring sections 12 and 13 respectively. The mattress sections 15 and 16 are secured to the spring sections 12 and 13 respectively and move forward as two Specification of Letters Patent.

units, the units moving toward and away from each other transversely of the bedstead for the purpose to be hereinafter described. To facilitate the movement of these section units, each is provided with a flexible handle 17.

Arranged transversely of the bedstead and depending from the side rails 10 thereof, 1s a pan support of substantially U- shaped formation in cross section. This support may include spaced angle iron bars 20 between which is supported the channel shaped member 21, or the support in its entirety may be formed from one piece of material. As shown, the support extends across the entire width of the bed with the upper edges of the side bars 20 raised flush with the side rails 10 of the bedstead. The sliding units above referred to, of the mattress and spring sections are supported upon the side bars 20 of the pan support, these units being equipped with felt or other suitable material 22 to eliminate noise of an kind while the sections are being adjusted or moved over the pan support.

In use of the bed, the head and trunk of the patient rest upon one of the end sections let of the mattress, the legs on the other end section, while the hips will be supported upon the movable units made up of the sliding spring and mattress sections above described. When use of the bed pan is required, either or both of the sliding units of the springs and mattress may be drawn outwardly beyond the side of the bed, thus providing an opening in the mattress as will be readily understood. The bed pan is then arranged upon the sliding channel member 21, by adjusting the latter with respect tothe side bars 20, and the pan may be properly positioned for use.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

That I claim is:
