Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 21, 1922.
Application rnednuy 21, 1919. serial no. 312,407.
To aZZ whom t may concern.
Be it'known thatI, MATTHEW S. CUMNER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city, county, and State of New YorinV have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My present invention relates to clamps or vises and is in the nature of an limprove- 1Iflent on similar devices previously patented y me. y
A special object of the present invention is to force the movable jaw yfirmly against the work and to overcome the tendencyv of this jaw to incline backwardly as it is engaged with the work.
Other objects of the invention are to simplify and strengthen the device.
Briefly the invention comprises' ay base carrying one of the jaws ofthe clamp and a movable jaw slidably mounted on said base, said movable jaw having a connect ing bloclrloosely mounted therein and hav- .ing also a wedging connection with the j aw, together with means,y such "as a screw, engaged with the block for operating the movable j aw.
Other features of the invention and details of construction will appear as the specification proceeds.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention embodied in one of its prac-A tical and preferred forms7 butit will be understood that the structure may be modified in certain respects without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
In said drawingsr .v l
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the dei vice, with the cover vplateV on the movable jaw shown as partly broken away to eX- pose the connecting block seated in said jaw.
Figure 2 is a side elevation ofthe device.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of line 3 3 of Figure 1. v
Figure t is a vlongitudinal sectional view, taken at one side ofthe central plane and l substantially ony the line -l of Figure 6.
Figure 5 is a similar sectional view, illus tratling the jaws clamped upon a piece of "V01" Figure 6 isa transverse sectional view on substantially the plane of line 6;-6 of Figure 4;
The. base of the device is designated 7 and the same is shown as carrying the integral jaw 8 at one end and as provided with a lug- 9 at the opposite end, forming a bearing for the jaw closing screw 10. This bearing may be made as an open bearing, such as indicated, having a removable cap 11, held in place by screws 12.
Thebase further is provided with a track 13 for the movable jaw. 14 designates the movable jaw which is slida'bly engaged on the track portion of the base and which is formed in the present disclosure with an open top chamber 15 therein, said chamber having a longitudinally extending slot 16 in the bottom thereof registering with a corresponding slot 17 formed in the track portion of the base.
at the opposite sides of the slot 16 and near the forward end thereof upwardly inclined shoulders 18are provided, said'shoulders being shown as 'carried by the hardened metal strips'or tracks 19 secured to the movable j aw 'by screws 20 at the opposite sides of the slot. y
Engaged within the chamber in the mov# able jaw is aconnecting member in the form of a block 21 having a head portion disposed within the chamber and riding' on the tracks 19 and a reduced dependent portion 22 eX- tending down through the registering slots in the movable jaw and base. This depend- 'ent extension carries a part engaged beneath a portion of the base, said part being shown as a plate 23, wider than the slot 17 secured to the lower edge of the extension 22rby screws 24 and slidingly engaging the under surface of the base.
The connecting block is looselyfengaged within the chamber and slot in the ymovable jaw, as indicated particularly in Figures 31 1 and Gand therefore may be considered as having a lostvmotion connection with said jaw. Thisblock furthermore has a'wedging connection with the jaw, by means Vof the i711# clined shoulders 25 at the forward end thereof, which bear upon the inclined shoulders 18 of' the jaw.
Theinovable jaw is actuatedrby the screw ,that asthe screw 10 is turned the connecting .block willbe carriedin one-,direction or the other and will, through its lost motion connection with the movablejaw, shift said jaw either inthe opening or closing direction. As the jaw is shifted in the closing direction the inclined shoulders 25ct theV connecting block engage the similarly inclined shoulders 18 of the j aw, as indicated in Figure 5, and riding over said shoulders force the movable avviirmly downward upon the base and into rigid holding engagement with the work, indicated at 80. A ny lost motion between the movable jaw andthe traclrwayr on which it .rides is thus takenup ,asA tlie aw is closed, by forcing the Afront end of the j aw firmly down on the base. This wedging action is illustrated to -an exaggerated degree-in Figure 5, which shows the movable jaw as `actuallytilted slightly downward.
' In practice this action is `hardly, perceptible but the effect is evident in the way that the work is gripped as iirmly at the top as at the bottom of the jaw. This wedging connection alsov forms :1n-automatic adjustment to `talreup thewear of theparts.
v The bottom, sides and fixed jaw end of the base 7 are inishedsuri'aces having rectangular relations. Thus the work 30 held between the jaws maybe drilled ormachined Y on different.. sides ivithOlit being removed from the vise, and holes made or surfaces iinished in desired relative positions. This construction makeslthe vise `particularly desirablefor drill .presswork g dllhat I claim z d y .lQZIn clamp, ajbase carrying .one jaw of the clamp and provided with a longitudinal slot, a jaw slidably engaged on saidbase and provided with a slot registering with the slot in the base, a connecting block carried by the movable jaw andhaving adependent portion extending `through the slots 4in ythe jaw and base, said block having ra,lost-motion connection with ,the jaw and saidblock yand movable j aw having inclined shoulders `engaging as rthe Ylost-motion .is taken up in' the l jaw @losing movement, and
