To all whom it mag concern;
Be it known thatI, A-ueosrus WILLIAM LoUIs SCHERMULY, a subject of the King of GreatBritain, residing at Stonecroft, Stone Cot Hill, Sutton, in 'the county ofSurrey, Eng nd, haveinv n dm w an vv sefi l mpr m t n st ni s f f Bn e j n th rti es; 91" wh h. application England Nov, 22, 191'],
Paar. 0, 118;3 4: fvhich h llow n is a p c f cat on r The fastenings to ,which my invention relates are ofthe kind inwhich arts, of, the fastening respectively on the ho y part, and the lid of the box, or equivalent, part sofother articles to b6;S6CllIfdf(S1lh for ex ample as the hatchways of; ships) are en gaged with ,eachother. and;th en, by a levering action, drawn tight and held in the closed, or securing,pos ition.
My invention has for itsobj ect to v provide a fastening of the aforesaid kindwhich is very simple in construction and operation and will enable very tight, or secure, closure of the box, or the like, to be effected with facility, the opening of the box, or the like, being also very readily effected. In describing my inventionI will presume that my improved fastening is to be applied to a box which it is desired to close tightly by the lid bearing upon rubber, or other elastic material, between it and the body of the box and from this description its application to analogous purposes will also be understood.
According to m invention the fastening consists of a loop-s aped piece, hinged to the body of the box, and with undercuts, or hooks, in the two side members, of the loop, and of a bar-like piece, hinged at its upper end to the lid, of the box and adapted, when in its fastening position, to come between the side members of the loop-shaped piece, the said bar-like piece carrying a cross-piece which can be brought into engagement with the undercuts, or hooks, of the aforesaid loop-shaped piece.
The accompanying drawing represents a fastening constructed in accordance with my invention, applied to a box, but I do not limit'myself to applying the fastening to securing the lid of a box, as it will be evident that the said fastening can be applied in other cases where a closure of an analogous kind is to be secured,
I have piece d of the said bar-like piece can be en- Figure 1 shows the box with the fasten- 1ng undone and the lid raisedandFigures 2 and 3 a re elevations of ater the box (drawn to a larger scale) showing the lid closed and secured by the fastenings. F 4 1s a detail of a modified form of the cross he I The loop-shaped piecea is hin ed at b to projections 'c from the body A of the box the said piece a having undercuts or hooks a, in itstwo side member's, The bar-like piece dishinged, at e,,to projections f fromthe lid B ofthebox and earr1es,"at its mwtmna; a cross piece 4?. This cross-piece can, if ired; b m d a justa y Providing it with a screw-nut 0F which will screw u on a screw-thread dfat theend of the barike, piece 03 and can .be fixed in its adju sted tion by theset-screw 'as 'sho wn (drawn toj alerg r-sc h) nEigu e v To fasten the lidB in its closed; position the loop-shapedpiece a is raisedand the bar-like piece d lowered so that the crossgaged with the undercuts, or books, a (which I term hooks) in the two side members of the said loop-shaped piece a and then, by forcing down the said 'loop shaped piece the bar-like piece d is drawn down with considerable force and conse quently the lid is tightly'closed and, as the hinge-joint 0 of the loop-shaped piece a is outward of the hinge-j oint of the bar-shaped piece (as illustrated in Figure 3), the said loop-shaped piece will, on being pressed towards the side of the box, pass the vertical plane in which its joint is situated and thus securely fasten the box lid.
The box is shown as having an inner top piece A with a hole A? in it and the lid as having a circular projection B carrying a rubber ring B to make a tight closure when the lid B is closed, but this of course is only an example and the invention is not in any way dependent on this.
If desired the body of the box can, (as shewn in dotted lines in Figure 3,) be provided with a staple, or eye-piece, g for a padlock 9 the said staple, or eye-piece, being so situated that it W111, when the loopshaped iece a is in its lowered and fastening position, pass between, and project beyond, the side members of the said loopshaped piece which is made long enough to be desired to give a yielding action, have a covering of material, such as a tube, or
tubes, of rubber.
Wha'tI claim is v 1. A fastening for box lids or the like, consisting of a loop-shaped piece, hinged to thebody of the box and provided with b hooks, in the side members of the loop and of a barlike piece hinged to the other of the parts to'be fastened together and adapted, when in its closed position, to come between the side members of the loop-shaped piece, the lower end of the said bar-like piece being provided with across-piece which can be brought into engagement with the hooks of the said loop-shaped piece.
:2. A device of the type specified in claim 1, in combination with an eye secured to the box beyond the range of the lower part of the bar-like piece and projecting through the end portion of the loop-shaped piece,
whenv in the closed position as hereinbefore explained.
3. A fastening device of the character described, comprising a T-bar pivoted to one member, a cooperating pivoted U-bar pivoted to a cooperating member and between the legs of which said T-bar lies in locking position, together with hooks on the legs of the U-bar engaging the cross piece of the T-bar and moving the latter over center with relationto the pivot of the U-' bar in looking position! 4%.. A fastening device of the character described, comprising a pivoted T-bar, a cooperating pivoted U-bar betweenthelegs of which said T -bar lies in locking; position, together with hooks on the'legs of-the U- ar engaging the cross piece of the, T-bar and moving the latter over center with relation to the pivot of the U-bar in locking position, in combination with an eye located to pass between the legs ofthe U-bar adjacent theconnecting strap at the free end of the latter in locking position and serving to receive the shackle of a padlock or the like to secure the parts in locked re lationshipf g In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
