I Specification of Letters Patent. Y Patented Fb. '7, 1922.
Application filed-June 7, 1 920. Sate lite-387,145.
, To all whom it may concern j Be it known that-I, C ARENCE C. CRALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and. State of Pennsylvania, have: invented certain new and useful Improvements, in Lathe Attachments, of which the following is a specification. w a The present invention relates .to apparatus, preferablyinthe form of an attachment for lathes,-whereby;jigs, dies, masterplates, templets andthe like can be easily positioned with the (greatest accuracy for thepurpose of boring holes vand the like. Inthe accompanying'drawings:. Figure 1 isa side elevation of a, well known type of lathe, with the apparatus in place thereon, V p I Figure 2 is a plan viewof the apparatus per se, V
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the same, Figure 4: is a side elevation, V Figure 5' is a vertical sectional view, Figure 6 is :a vertical isectional'view' at ri ht angles to Figure 5,
igure 7 is a front elevation of the work holder with a piece ofworkin place thereon, Figure 8 is a perspective view ofthe work holder,
Figure 9 is a vperspective view of the support, a 4 Figure 10 is a detail view ion-an enlarged scale of the clamp between the baserand support, c
Figure 11 is a View in elevation showing a set of spacing blocks.
The lathe illustrated in Figure 1 is of well known type, and includes .a rotary I The lathe carries a carriage 14 that .is movable toward ZIIIClVfIOHI the spindle in a manner well understood by .those skilled in the art. Y Y v The invention, as disclosed, includes a base 15 adapted to be mounted onfand secured to the carriage 14 of the lathe as illustrated in Figure 1. Thisbase is ,provided with a transversehorizontal guideway in the form of two upstanding parallel; v
fix the work holder, in .difl'erentvert-l'cal. post Y ribs 16. constituting tracks. The base isfpro vided between the, said. ribs'or tracks with a longitudinal slot 17. ,Slidably mounted on the guideway, is a' supportinflthe 'iform 'otia bracket .18 having grooves its lower "side, as shown 'at 1'9 l'tov.' 1rzoceiveitheqs aid ribs or tracks 16, and having a clamp, means 7 i of which the saidlsu'pport can be. secured against movement-on the base and v in different-positions. This clamp consists ofsa bolt 20 that passes through the slot 17 .and'
coiled Y springs 25, seatedlins sockets: in l the nut, bear against the said washer 2 4. )The washer'produces a friction clamp when the nutis loosened, soas to hold the support against too free movement on the base.
-.The base at one end is provided with an upstanding lug 26, and the lug and adjacent side of the support are rovided with opposing bearing elements2 "Gagemechanism is adapted to be inter osed'betweenfsaid bearing elements 27 v as s ,own more iparticur larly in Figure 2. 'Oppositely disposed-relatively sliding wedges 28 in and 29 m smployed, the wedge-28 having an indicating mark 30 thereon and thewedge 29 having a suitable scale 31 that vc zoop'erates;. with the indicator 30. These wedges areadapted to abut againstone ofthe beari f eleinents,27,
and interposedbetween the we ge 28vand the i other lbearing elementcan beplaced interchangeable spacing -b locks,as 32,, 32 and 32, illustrated in Figure 11," depending upon the distance apart the bearing elements 27 happen to be by reason of the-position, of the work being operated on. In'other Words,
the blocks 32,322 32?, 'etc are of. predetermined length, 7 1 I The support 18 is provided with ann rig'ht guideway having vertical ribs or tracks 33. A. work holder 34: is vertically 'slidable on thesetracks, being provided in its. rear side withgrooves 35 toreceive ,thejsanie. IEBetweenthe tracks the vertical ortion ofthe support is provided with vi verticali slotfifi,
through whichip'asses ast'ud '37 carriedby the work holder, and having a clamping nut 38 threaded on. its rearend, andladapted, to actuagainst the rearfside ofthesuppbrt' to tions. The upper end ofthesupport is providwith a projection 39,,that overhangs the wvork holder, and said;.pr0iection1and the .upper'end ,of, the workholder ,arefproiidfl with fliard'ened "bearing 340. gliBe tween these elements is placed an adjustable gage comprising coacting scaled wedgesl and interchangeable spacing blocks, one of which-is illustrated at 42. In order to normally support the work holder coiled springs.
" .Itwill be evident that it a piece-of work asA in'Figure 7 is mounted onthe work holder and is properly positioned thereon by the supporting ledge 45 and the stop pins 47, this work can be readily shifted both horizontally and vertically and its position with respect toa tool placed in the chuck spindle accurately determined.
7 Therefore any desired. arrangement of holes'can be predetermined and bored with V the utmost accuracy andwithease and expedition. V
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advan tages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will bexunderstood that various'changes in the size, shape,
proportion and minor details of construction, may beresorted' to without departing 7 from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad- I the combinationwith an upright support,
of'an upright" work holder vertically 1novblethereon and having an upright front face, means for securing work to said face, means fori'securing the work holder in dif- :ferent positions on the support, yielding Ltiean's tor supoprting the work holder, and means 'foradjustably mounting the support on aj lathe in position to operate on the work secured to said work holder.
