Be it known that I ALBERT E. MAYNanD, a lcitizen of the United States, residing at y Southbridge, in the county of "Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented ,y certain new'and useful .Improvements in Grinding Tools, of which the following is a speciv ication.

y Prior to my invention 'difiiculty'has been experienced in connection with machines of this character due to the necessity of absolutely accurate blocking of ,the lens so that it might come in the necessary relationship to the grinding teol, this being particularly the case when a cylinder correction possessving definite axis'was to be ground. Difficulty also has been experienced in those cases where due to an imperfection of the machine .1 improper operation or the like the grinding of the lens after itiwjas started was found to be off the desired axis position and it was desired to slightly varyithe relationship. v
One of the purposes of my present invention, therefore, is to'make it possible to adjust the relative aXial position of the lens. and tool at any point during the grinding operation and to make it Aunnecessary to block kthe lens with particular eXactitudeLor to compensatevfor any inaccuracies ofthe blocking or grinding. Y
A further object of my present invention is the provision of a novel and improved mechanism which shall not only accomplish this purpose, but which shall in addition be so constructed that various forms of grinding tools may be interchangeably employed in connection with a single grinding machine, thus making the machine universally adaptable and not requiring the purchase of special tools for use in connection with the machine. 1

recessed as at l5 to receive a grinding tool 16 which is locked in position in the recessed cap member through thel use of the set.
It will be understood that the foregoing v l described construction isadaptable for usev f f' with either spherical, toric or other forms of lens grinding' tools. In order thatmy device may be most readily used with all ofi these different tools I preferably makea torio lens member separable from the base portion 1 but capable of ready application thereto as desired. This result I accomplish by slottng the upstandng portion 6 or 091- lar on the base l, as at the point 22, pro viding recesses to receive the pivot blocks 23 whiehare shaped to form a continuation of .the collar extending from the socket to the edge of the collar. These blocks have journaled therein the ends of the rods 25 which arefsecured in position as by the Washers 24 fitting in grooves 26 countersunk into the bblocks 23. The rods extend outward through .which secures in position the guide arms 4 locked between the Washer 31 and the flange cap 32 at theouter end of each of the arms 27. In use the center stud is removed and Athe yoke 28 and associated'parts slipped in position by the set screw when the flanged lportion l2 thereof resting on the collar and on the upper portion of the blocks 23 Will securely hold the vtoric device in position so that it may be employed with any kind ot' tool carried by the machine, While the member 9 maybe provided with the pin 21 to lock the tool against rotation thereon.
On the other hand, when it is not desired to use the torio attachment, as for spherical grinding, the toric `attachment is removed and the stud replaced. If preferred the tool holding stud member 9 may be provided with a flange cap 33 extending over and providing al closure :tor the recesses 22 to prevent access of abrasive or the likethereto. It is to be noted also that'the yoke is prefer- -ably'provided With an aperture 34 through which a Wrench or screw-driver may be inserted to operate the locking screw l7.'
