Description
` D. Nl. DEAN. CONCRETE BLOCK FOR CULVEBTS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB, 10,191.9.
Patented Jan. 31, 1922,.
` 2 SHEETS-SHEET I- INVENTDH. f-l- Mmfw STATES noLLrVEn M; DEAN, or rncominmnors, Assrcnoa BYMnsNn ASSIGNMENTS, To"
7" MARY W. DEAN, or rnonra,` ILLINOIS.
Application led. Februaryl, 1919, Serial No. 275,970.
To all whom tmayiconcern: y, y Be it' known that I, DoLLivnR M. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Lacon, in the county ofMarshall and State of Illinois, have invented new useful Improvements in Concrete Blocks for Culverts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to concrete blocks, preferably hollow in construction, and designed more particularly for culvert uses.
The invention has for its object to improve reinforced hollow concrete block sections and to provide a new and novel connecting means for uniting the adjoining block sections.
That the invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the description, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hollow block embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevationof Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section as the same would appear, if taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross-section as the same would appear, if taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, in elevation, showing' the connectin means for uniting adjoining blocks, an
Fig. 6 is a detail cross-section, in plan, of the connecting means, seen in Fig. 5.
Like characters of reference denote cor-` responding parts throughout the figures.
The block 1 in 'length and cross-section isy not unlike blocks of this character now being manufactured, having the side walls 2, the top and bottom walls 3 and end walls 4:.
Each block is reinforced as follows: 5 designate longitudinally arranged rods or bars, preferably located at the corners, and 6 are rods or bars placed midway between the bars or rods 5 and embedded in the side walls 2. 7 designate a plurality of spaced rods or bars which are arranged transversely through the top wall 3 and bent `down and over the upper opposite corner rods or bars 5 and embedded in the side walls 2 to a point approximately coinciding with the rods or bars 6.
`Similar rods or bars 8 are located at or near the opposite ends of the iblock but are embedded, as shown, in the top and bottom walls 3, the side walls 2 and are bent at the concnnmn :BLOCK ron cunvnnrs.`
Specification of Letters Patent.
corners overthe rods or bars 5. Extending longitudinally` of the block embedded in the top and bottom `walls 3 are a plurality of spaced vrods or bars 9. In the upper wall 3 these rods or bars 9, preferablyoverlie the rods or bars 7 and 8, and in the lower wall 3 said rods or bars preferably underlie the rods or bars 8.
The vertical sides of the end walls 4, as shown ini Fig. 2, are provided with, preferably, semi-circular grooves 10 `extending from the top of the blockto a point removed a short distance from the bottom of the block, and said grooves are intersected, where the rods or bars 5` and 6 pass therethrough, by preferably, semi-spherical sockets 11.
During the formation of the block 1, the rod-sor bars 5 and 6 are preferably laid in the material, inclined from one end to the other with their ends bent into a loop 12,
- V shaped, see Fig. 6, and with the ends of the loops made fast in the material, and the arcuate ends of the looped ends projecting' slightly beyond the end of the block.
Inclining the rods or bars `5 and 6 presentstheir looped ends' 12 so that adjacent blocks may be caused to abut, see Fig'. 5,
with the loops 12 on the rods or bars 5 and` 6 in one block, overlying, or underlying, as may be the case, the loops 12 on the rods or bars 5 and 6 in the other block, and when so positioned a rod or bar 13 is passed down through the matching loops 12 to unite them, said rod or bar 13 being located inv .the matching grooves 10 in the blocks, and
when the parts have been so connected the grooves 10, vas well as the matching semispherical sockets 11 are lled with a binder 1d such as asphaltum, or other suitable or desirable filler.
yThe blocks thus constructed and connected `are insured against moisture getting to the rods or bars, and such connections, therefore, will last as long as the blocks themselves.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a hollow concrete block provided with reinforcing rods embedded therein, in spaced relation and extending longitudinally thereof at the corners and through the top, bottom and sides, reinforcing rods embeddedin the block at the opposite ends thereof and overlying and underlying certain of said first' mentioned Patented Jan. 31, 1922.'
rods,.and a plurality of reinforcing rods vembedded `in the block in spacedV relation between said second mentioned rods and extending through the top and partially down the opposite sides and overlying and underlying certain of said first mentioned rods.
2. In combination, a rectangular hollow block provided at its ends andon opposite sides of the opening therethrough with vertically disposed semi-Spherical' grooves Y opening out of the top of the block and closed at the bottom and at intervals intersaid block and spaced at intervals through-` out the llength of Said block.
In Witness whereof, I `have hereunto aiXed my hand thisl 21st day of January', 1919. cv DOLLIVEBJ M. DEAN.
