PIN JOINT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THOMAS J. POLLARD and Lnwis S. DARLING, citizens of the United States, residing at Cranston and Providence, respectively, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin Joints, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in pin joints for use upon pins and brooches as used for ornamental purposes, and the principal object of our invention is to'provide a pin joint inexpensive of construction, simple in operation, and that can be readily secured to the body of the pin.

lVe accomplish this purpose by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the back of the brooch showing the pin itself, and our improved joint secured to the back of the brooch;

In Figure 1, 1 is a portion of the brooch with the back thereof toward the observer. 2, is the shank of the pin itself. The joint before it i completed is shown in the blank form in Figure 3 and is comprised of a base with integral laterally slotted wings or ears 33 and a tongue 4: and a bifurcated or lon gitudinally slotted tongue 5, between said ears, as shown. This blank is struck in one piece by a single operation from suitable sheet metal. The blank is then bent upon the lines a, b, 0, (Z, the members 3, 3, 4 and 5 being simply bent at approximately right angles to the base. The tongue 5 of the blank is not bent until after the cross bar or head of the pin 2 has been inserted in the slots of the ears. When so inserted, the tongue 5 is then bent at right angles and the inner wall of the lot in said tongue 5 serves as a support for the shank of the pin 2, for providing a proper tension when the pin engages the catch 7 commonly used on brooches, and at the same time this tongue secures the pin safely within the lateral slots of the ears 3, 3. The joint is then fastened to the back of the brooch l by soldering or other equivalent method.

It will be seen from Figure 1 that the form of pin used in connection with this Specification of Letters Patent.

joint is what is known a a T-headed pin. The advantages of our improvement are simplicity, cheapness of construction, and security of the pin within the joint.

Having now described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ears upon the base, and a longitudinally slotted tongue upon the base between the ears closing the entrances to the slots in said ears.

A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ears upon the base, and a longitudinally. slotted tongue upon the base between the ears closing the entrance to the slots in said ears, the inner wall of the slot of said tongue terminating in position to serve as a support for the shank of a pin held by said joint prior to engagement of said pin with the usual catch.

3. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ear upon the base, and a longitudinally slotted tongue upon the base closing the entrances to the slots of said ears, said ears including upper portions overhanging the upper end of said tongue.

4. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ears upon the base, and a tongue upon the base between the ears having a bifurcated free end and closing the entrances to the slots in said ears.

5. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ears upon the base, and a tongue upon the base between the ears having a bifurcated free end and closing the entrances to the slots in said ears, the space between the bifurcations of the tongue communicating with the space between the ears for permitt-ing free swinging movement of a pin held by the latter and the tongue in the slots of the ears, and another tongue upon the base opposite the first named tongue forming a stop for the opening of said pin.

6. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted ears upon the base, and a tongue upon the base between the ears having abifurcated free end and closing the entrances to the slots in said ears, the space between the bifurcations of the tongue communicating with the space between the ears for permitting free swinging movement of a pin held by the latter and the tongue in the slot of the ears, and another tongue upon the base opposite the first named tongue forming a stop for the opening of said pin, said first named tongue substantially contacting the front edges of the ears below their slots, and said cars including upper portions overhanging the upper ends of the bifurcations of said first named tongue.

7. A pin including a pin member having a cross bar at one end, a joint member comprising a base having laterally slotted ears thereon with the slots of said ears forming bearings for the ends of said cross bar, and a tongue upon the base having a bifurcated free end and retaining the cross bar within the slots of the ears, the space between the bifurcations of said tongue communicating with the space between said ears for allowing swinging movement of the pin.

8. A pin including a pin member having a cross bar at one end, a joint member comprising a base having laterally slotted ears thereon, with the slots of said ears forming V bearings for the ends of said cross bar, and

a tongue upon the base having a bifurcated free end and retaining the cross bar within theslots of the ears, the space between the bifurcations of said tongue communicating nally slotted tongue upon the base adapted to close the entrances to the slots of said ears. 7

10. A pin joint comprising a base, laterally slotted-ears upon the base, and a longitudinally slotted tongue upon the base adapted to close the entrances to the slots of:
