Be it known that I, HARRY E. BROWN, a'citizen of the United States, residing at \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful rench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention-has reference to wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches especially designed for supporting drill bits, of the type employed for drilling wells or the like, during the operation of connecting the drill bits to the rod which supports the same, when-in use."
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel means for preventing displacement of the drill bit from the wrench, while the bit is being positioned.
A further object of the invention is to insure against the pivoted operatin handle, pivoting upwardly, under the weight of the drill bit being applied.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the-description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a fragmental side elevational view of a wrench in its supporting position.
Figure 2 illustrates a transverse sectional view through the head of the wrench.
Figure 3 illustrates a plan view of the wrench.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the handle of the wrench by means of which the wrench may be guided or positioned on the drill bit under operation, and as shown, the forward end of the handle is curved downwardly as at 6 and bifurcated to provide a pair of supporting arms 7, which are adapted to contact with the drill bit to support the handle 5 in a horizontal position.

from and positioned within suitable openings formed within the arms 7 of the handle so that pivotal movement of the handle 5 with relation to the member 8 will be per mitted.
The upper surface of the member 8 is provided with a pair of spaced run-ways indicated at 11 and 12 respectively, the ends of the run-ways being connected by a relatively short curved section 13, so that the ball bearings indicated at 14L and positioned in the run-way may operate therethrough in a continuous path, and as shown the outer run-way 11 is deeper than the adjacent runway so that the ball bearings of the inner run-way 12 support the entire weight of the member 9, which constitutes the jaw of the wrench.
This member 9 or jaw, of the wrench is provided with a substantially rectangular cut out portion of a size to embrace the shank 15 of a drill bit, which drill bit is supplied with an annular flange 16 to form an abutment for the upper surface of the jaw 9.
Forming a part of the upper surface of the jaw 9, is a flange 17 providing a bearing surface for the ball bearings 14, the under surface of the flange 17 being slightly grooved to accommodate the ball bearing i l, to prevent lateral displacement thereof when the device is brought into operation.
Extending downwardly and outwardly from the underside of the jaw 9, are the operating handles 18 disposed opposite each other. and which handles provide means for rotating the drill bit 15 to cause the threaded portion 19 thereof to be positioned within the rod supporting the bit, in operation.
The forward portion of the jaw 9 is cut away as at 20 to permit the shank of the drill bit to be inserted in the jaw. there being provided a latch member 21 adapted to close the cut away portion so that the shank of the drill bit may be grapsed by the jaw 9 and held against displacement.
One of the ends of the jaw 9 is provided with a cut out portion, the pin 22 connectin the walls formed by the cut out portion, and this pin operates in an elongated opening 23 formed in one end of the latch member 21, there being a coiled spring 2% disposed within this opening 23 and having one of its ends contacting with the pin 22, the opis moved posite end thereof contacting with one of the end walls of the elongated opening for normally urging the latch member 21 to a position as indicated by Figure 3 ofithe drawing. 7
At the opposite end of -tion is formed a keeper 25 cooperating with the extension 26 formed at the free end of the latch member 21, the thumb lug 27, be ing also provided on the latch member 2l'to permit the operation of the latchmember to openor close the jaw 9.
Disposed'at a pointon the upper surface of the curved portion 6 of the handle, is an eye 28 accommodating the hook member 29 having connection with one end of the supporting chain 30, which in turn has connection with a suitable arm, not shown, and b means of which the bit 15 may be lifted and moved to various positions.
In-the operation of the device, the wrench to a position to grasp the drill'bit, the latch member 21 being forced rearwardly against the tension of the coiled spring 24 to release the extension 26 from its keeper. The wrench is now positioned over the shank of the bit, at a point under the flange 16 thereof, and the bit is now placed directly underthe rod to which the bit is to be connected, and the operating handles 18 V are rotated to cause the, drill bit to be threaded Vintoits supporting rod, after which the latch member may be again opened to release the head of the wrench from the drill bit;

I11 a wrench, a handle having downwardly'curved arms, a jaw having a flange and having downwardly curved handle portions, a head positioned between the flange and handle portions and having connection with the first-mentioned handle, said head having run-ways, ball-bearings positioned in the run-ways and adapted to contact with the flange, and said downwardly curved arms adapted to contact with a drill bit supported by the wrench to support the firstnientionedhandle portion in a horizontal plane] I I i .2.
