PERGUSSVE ROCK-DRILLING APPARATUS.

lle it knoivn that I, Riemann maar finals, of the tovvn of Cobalt, in the dis-y trict of Nipissing, and Province of Qntario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Percussive Rock-Drilling Apparatus; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the' same.
This invention relates to a permissive rock drilling apparatus containing certain novel features of construction which permit of greatly-increased efficiency With corresponding advantageous operation, and it relates more particularly to the rotating device by which the piston can be caused to revolve during the operation of the drill; the general subject matter of this invention being disclosed in Patent No. LQGQJA?.

which is formed by a block y, having a set of diagonally-arranged ports g through which the air is delivered from the air chamber on the back piston head fr, which is provided `with a turbine or rotating device o". The delivery of the air against the back piston head r causes the axial and rotating movement of the piston as hereinafter described. The paivls o are carried by forks o extended through the cylinder from the exterior of the apparatus, the forks engaging the ring t to prevent its movement axially of the cylinder during the reciprocation of the piston, and the pawls engaging the ratchet teeth and permitting of the forward.r and preventing the reverse, rotation of the ring and piston. By this means, partial rotation of the piston may be effected at each stroke.
If the drill should not be required to rotate step by step during the reciprocation of the piston, the forks o and pawls o may be Withdrawn, and in that case, the ring t can reciprocate with the piston, Without affecting its motion.
For the down stroke of the piston, cornpressed air is admitted from the air chest through the port c" into the air chamber g from which it is discharged through the diagonal ports Q against the turbine or rotating device r of the piston head r. The impact of the air on the turbine tends to cause the rotation of the piston, and the er;- pansion of the air causes its down stroke.
The projections of the ratchet Wheel are continuously in the spiral grooves of the piston, and when the ratchet wheel is prevented, by the forks, from moving axially with the piston, these projections and spiral grooves permit only of a step by step rotation of the piston. When the ratchet Wheel is released, by the Withdrawal of the forks, it moves axially with the piston, and the latter' can then continuously revolve during its reoiprocation in both directions due to the momentum resulting from the action of the compressed air on the turbine, the inertia being su'iicient to carry the rotation through the upward stroke. In this Way the piston may be selectively permitted to rotate either step by step or continuously during its reciprocation. `When the piston reaches the limit of its down stroke, its action is reversed by compressed air admitted to the cylinder through the port i.
What I claim is:
1. In a pereussive rock drilling apparatus, the combination of a cylinder, a rotary.-
reciprocating piston therein having its circnmferential wall spirally grooved between the piston heads, a ratchet ring encircling the piston having ratchet teeth on its outer surface and projections on its inner suriace enlg'aging;t in the spiral grooves of the piston, removable forks extending,r through the cylinder wall to engage said ring and prevent its reciprocating movement, and detent pawls carried by the forks engaging` the ratchet teeth to permit of the rotation oit the ring in one direction and resist its rotation in the opposite direction when the forks are engaged therewith, said ring being` free to reciprocate with the piston when the forks are removed from the cylinder.
2. A percussive drilling` apparatus comprising a cylinder, a rotaryreciprocating piston therein having its circumferential Wall spirally grooved between the piston heads, a ratchet ring encircling the piston between the piston heads and havingl internal members enteredV in the spiral grooves, removable forked means extending1 through the cylinder wall engaging the ratchet .ring and preventing its reciprocation when en gaged therewith, and ratchet means com bined with said removable means engaging with the ratchet ring for the step by step rotation of the piston, the removal of said forked means releasing` the ratchet means from the ratchet ring for free movement with the piston.
3. A percussiverock drilling apparatus, comprising` a` cylinder, a rotaryreciprocati ng piston therein having its circumferential wall spirally grooved between the piston heads, a ratchet ring` encircling the piston between the piston heads and having internal members entered in the spiral grooves of the piston, removable forked means extending; through the cylinder wall engaging the ratchet ring and preventing its reciprocation when engaging therewith, ratchet means combined with said removable forked means engaging with the .ratchet ring` for the step by step rotation of the piston, the removal of said means releasing the ratchet means from the ratchet ring for free `movement with the piston, and means for introducing a motive agent into the cylinder externally at opposite ends of the piston for its actuation.
