COUNTER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. MD, 1922.
Application filed November 1, 1920. Serial No. 421,098.
State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Counter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The device which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is in the natureof a guard rail associated with lunch counters, and designed to prevent breakage of glasses, dishes and other articles seating on the counter, and also provided with a holder for menu cards or folders.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved device of the kind stated which is so mounted and supported that it can be readily swung clear of the counter when the latter is to be cleaned.
With the object stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view locking device, and
Fig. 3 is a-perspective view showing a modified fastening means.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes a counter, shelf or similar lunchroom fixture designed tohold glasses, cups and other articles. Associated with the rear and the ends of the counter is a guard rail consisting of two superposed and spaced rod-like members 6 and 7 positioned to extend parallel to the rear edge of the counter, and spaced upwardly therefrom a suitable distance. The bottom member 6 has lateral bends 8 at its ends, and the top member 7 has downward bends 9 at its ends whereby it is connected to the member 6' near theends thereof. The members 6 and 7 are alsoconnected intermediate their ends by a post 10.
The forward ends of the bends 8 terminate in downward bends 12 toward the top of the counter 5, and said bends have foot pieces 13 at the bottom to seat on the counter top, near the front edge thereof.
i To the rear edge of the counter 5 are fastened upright bracket members 14 carrying at the top bearing members 15 for the rod of the rail 6, said bearing members being metal straps which are looped around the-rod and are fastened to the bracket members by screws 16.
The rod 6 seats rotatably and also slidably .in the bearing 15, and hence it may be rotated to swing the end portions upwardly to clear the counter 5 when the latter is to be wiped off or cleaned. To hold the parts in elevated position, the bearings 15, have keeper recesses 17' for latch pins 18 extending laterally from the rod 6. The keeper recesses 17 are angular, one portion being parallel to the rod 6 and the other portion being positioned transversely of the rod. It will therefore be seen that when the pins 18 are in transverse portions of the recesses 17, i
the rod 6 may be rocked to elevate the end portions 8, and then by sliding the rod lengthwise to seat the pins in other portions of the recesses, the rod is locked and prevented from turning to lower its end portions. A reversal of the operation releases the rod 6 and allows the same to turn to lower the end portions 8. I
Where a wooden counter 5 is used, the bracket members 11 can be fastened to its rear edge .by screws 19, as shown in Fig. 1, but if the device is to be attached to a marble counter, the fastening shown in Fig. 3 will be employed. This fastening consists of a pair of jaw members 20 and 21 carried by the bracket members 1 1. The counter 22 seats at its rear edge between the jaw members 20 and 21, and the latter jaw member carries set screws 23 adapted to be screwed against the bottom of the counter.
The base portions of the bracket members 14 are connected by a longitudinal bar 21 carrying upstanding resilient clasps 25 adapted to hold a menu card or the like.
1 claim:
A guard for counters, comprising a guard rail extending in the direction of the length of the counter at its rear edge, and having lateral end portions extending transversely of the counter and terminating in foot portions seating on the counter top, bearings for the guard rail carried by the counter, in which bearings the guard rail is rotatable to swing its end portions clear of the counter top, and means for locking the guard rail when the end portions are thus swung.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
'LE ROY B. ALLEN.
