To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AUsUs'rUs Bowsnn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of llndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in air valves and the object thereof is to afiord a simple and efiicient unit member for applying air under pressure to pneumatically operated apparatus, and for exhausting air therefrom.
The object of the improvement is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is a detail view showing an end view of the air inlet valve.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughoutthe several views, and having reference now to the same 1 is a housing having a central bore 2 extending therethrough and having an; inlet port '3, exhaust port and communicating port 5, the latter opening into the bore of the housing between the inlet and exhaust ports and being located adjacent the exhaust port.- Within the bore of the housing is lodged an annular valve seat 6 between the communicating port and inlet port, and between the valve seat and inlet port is located a poppet valve 7 which is faced with leather washed 8 and arranged to rest upon the valve-seat 6 and close the openin 9 therein. Preferably the valve 7 is in the form of a piston fitting the bore and has xterior longitudinal channels 10 for the passage of air between the valve and the adjacent walls of the housing. The upper end of the housing 1 is closed by a plug or cap 11, and a spring 12 is interposedbetween the cap and the valve 7 so that the latter is normally held seated firmly upon the valve seat 6.
An operating member 13 is movably positioned in the housing and consists of a plunger 14 which snugly fits the bore thereof so as to close the housing at its lower end, and
has also a stem 15 that extends upwardly through the annular valve seat and bears against the lower'end of the valve 7 so that as the operating member is forced upwardly into the bore the valve will be lifted from the seat and the exhaust port will also be closed by the plunger 14.
In using the invention the inlet port is connected to a feed-pipe 16 for supplying air under pressure, the exhaust port is provided with an exhaust pipe 17, and the communicating port is connected by a service-pipe 18 with the pneumatically operated apparatus (not shown) which it is intended to govern. By applying pressure to the operating member so as to force it inwardly of the housing the valve becomes unseated and the exhaust port becomes closed so that air from the supply-pipe is admitted through the communicating port to the pneumatic apparatus. V hen the operating member is released it is moved to its normal position by the spring pressed valve which becomes closed, shutting off the admission of compressed air, and the exhaust port becomes opened so that the air previously admitted to the pneumatic apparatus is released therefrom into the exhaust pipe.
This apparatus is especially useful for applying compressed air for expelling liquid from storage tanks such as are employed in connection with dispensing apparatus, where pressure and exhaust of air are alternately efiected.
Wha I claim is 1. A valve of the character described comprising in combination, a tubular body having a uniform bore, a hollow boss adjacent one end and two hollow bosses adjacent the other end, each boss being in communication with said bore through a port, a plunger fitting said bore at one end of the body, and slidable to obstruct the adjacent port, a valve in said bore controlling the flow through the port at the opposite end of the body, and means to maintain said valve and plunger a constant distance apart.
2. A valve of the character described comprising in combination, a body having a uniform bore and three ports through its wall, one port being intermediate the other two lengthwise of the body, a plunger fitting said bore at one end of the body and slidable to control the adjacent port, a plug closing the other end of the bore, a valve in' said bore controlling the port nearest said plug, an extension on the plunger abutting said valve and yieldable means tending to close said valve. 3. A valve of the character described comprising in combination, a body having a bore, a valve seat in said bore intermediate the ends thereof, the bore from one end of the body to said seat being of uniform diameter, the bore from the other end of the body to said seat also being of uniform diameter, tWo ports in the wall of the body between one end and said seat, a third port between the other end and said seat, a plunger fitting the bore having the two ports and adapted to control the end port, a plug closing the other end of thebody, a valve associated with said seat, a spring interposed between said plug and valve yieldingly holding the valve closed and a stem projecting from said plunger and abutting said valve to open the latter when the plunger is moved inwardly.
4. A valve of the character described comprising in. combination a single tubular mosses the body adjacent said plug having a port and two ports adjacent said plunger, the one nearer the plunger being controlled there by, a valve in the bore controlling the first mentioned port, and means controlling said valve in accordance with the position of said plunger.
5. A valve of the character described comprising in combination a tubular casting having a valve seat in its bore, a plug closing one end thereof, a piston fitting said bore between said plug and seat and adapted at one end to cooperate with said seat, said piston having a longitudinally extending channel in its periphery, a port through the wall of the casting between the said seat and plug, two ports in the wall of the casting adjacent the other end thereof, a plunger fitting the bore at this end and controlling the adjacent port, said plunger projecting so slightly from the end of the casting, and means controlling-said piston in accordance with the position of said lunger.
