AUTOMATIC CAB STOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL H. HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stone, in the county of Pike and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Car Stops, of which the following is a specification. I
lily invention relates to automatic means for stopping cars, particularly mine or pit 'ars; and a primary object thereof is to prevent such cars from colliding with an upended dump, with consequent damage.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic car-stop which is inexpensive to install and which is therefore adapted to use where the amount of material handled is relatively small and does not warrantthe installation of an automatic car feeder, though of course the use is not to be thus limited.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which is extremely simple in construction and operation, and also one which cannot fail to function properly.
lVith the above general objects in view, and others which will be obvious to those skilled in the art, from the description hereinafter, my invention consists in the features, details of construction, and combinations of parts, which will first be described in detail in connection with the accom ianying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims;
In the drawings:
Figure '1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus, parts being in section to more clearly show the operation, and Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
The tipple is referred to generally by the numeral 1, and is provided with any pre ferred form of tilting track'section or dumping'platform 52. At the forward end of the dumping platform are the usual stop-horns 3 with which the wheels of the pit cars will impinge and prevent the car from running off the dumping platform. This platform is pivoted as shown at 4:, and carries the sword 5 adjacent its rear enc. All of the construction thus far described is old and per se it involves no invention.
The car-stop and its operative connection with the dumping platform will now be described.

ineral 6, substantially midway between the tipple rails 7, '7, is a car-stop or bumper 8. The bumper may be of any desired construction and is preferably provided with an iron bumper head 9.
A. downwardly extending arm 10 passes through a slot 11 in the bump uand is pivotally mounted therein. At its lower end this arm is pivotally connected as shown at 12 with a link 15) which is itself pivotally attached at 14: to the sword 5. A chain 15, or other suitable sinpporting means is attached to the rear end of the link 13 and to the tipple platform as shown at 16 and l? respectively.
A. series of holes 18 may be provided in the link 13 for the purpose of adjusting the arm 10, so that the bumper will be at the desired elevation when in operative position.
A rod 19 carrying a coil spring 20 passes through an aperture in the tipple platform and is attached to the car-stop.
If desired, suitable stays 21 may lead from the car-stop pivot for reenforcing the same in case a wh ole trip should accidentally come upon it.
The operation of the apparatus will now be described with particular reference to Figure l which shows in full lines the car stop, the dumping platform, and its connect ing mechanism, in. elevated position; while dotted lines show the position of the same elements in lowered position.
For the purpose of describing the operation I will assume that there is no car on the dumping platform and that all elements the apparatus are in the positions shown by dotted lines.
A pit car is now run onto the tilting section to be dumped, and as the rear end of the tilting section or dumping platform rises the sword 5 will. raise and force to the left (F 1.) the link 13, which will in turn lift the arm 10, thereby raising the car-stop into operative position. l Vhen in this position, if another car should be accidentally run out on the tipple platform it will not strike and damage the dumping platform but it will be engaged and stopped by the bumper 8; the rod 19 and spring 20 acting as a shock absorber.
After the dumping operation the platform 2 will be lowered, and by means of the same operating mechanism previously described, the bumper will be drawn down positively into its inoperative position, whereby the next car may pass freely over the same onto position. ltiwill' be obvious, however, that my invention 1s also desirable for use as an extra precaution incombination with automatiocar feeder installations,-so that no damage would result if the feeder system' should fail to function properly.
In accordance with the patent statutes 1 have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of my invention, but
do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting; myself or the scope of my invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such I aim to include in th scope of the appended claims.
W hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An automatic car-stop including a dumping platform, a pivotally mounted bumper located in front of the dumping: platform, and a positive connection between the bumper and the dumping platform for elevatingand'de'pre'ssing said bumper in accordance with corresponding movements of said dumping platform. ,2. An automatic car-stop dumping platform, a pivotally mounted bumper located in front of the dumping platform, a positive connection between the bumper and the platform for'elevating and depressing said bumper in accordance with corresponding movements of said-"dumping platform and a shock absorber connected with said bumper.
3. An automatic car-stop including a dumping platform, pivotally mounted bumper located in. front of the.v dumping platform, a positive connection between the bumper and the dumping platform for ele vatinggand depressing said bumper in ac cordance with COTYGSPOIIGIDQ movements of including a said dumping platform, a rod carried by the free end of the bumper, and a coil spring carried by the-rod, said rod and coil spring, acting as a shock absorber.
